0:00:03 > 0:00:06Hello. Wednesday was a day of classic springtime weather
0:00:06 > 0:00:09where we have cold air sitting on top of the UK,
0:00:09 > 0:00:10a bit of heat from the sun
0:00:10 > 0:00:12that drives the clouds,
0:00:12 > 0:00:13spectacular clouds
0:00:13 > 0:00:15and we get some vicious downpours
0:00:15 > 0:00:16with some thunder and lightning.
0:00:16 > 0:00:18Thursday is going to bring further showers,
0:00:18 > 0:00:21but not necessarily in the same place
0:00:21 > 0:00:23or the same type of showers.
0:00:23 > 0:00:25This is what it looks like round about lunchtime.
0:00:25 > 0:00:28In fact, this little mini weather front,
0:00:28 > 0:00:30if anything, is going to cause cloudier skies,
0:00:30 > 0:00:33because on Wednesday, we had sparkling blue skies,
0:00:33 > 0:00:35a brief downpour, then sparkling blue skies again.
0:00:35 > 0:00:36I think, overall,
0:00:36 > 0:00:39Thursday is just going to be a lot more cloudy
0:00:39 > 0:00:42across this southern portion of the UK and, actually,
0:00:42 > 0:00:45a bigger chance of encountering some rain.
0:00:45 > 0:00:47There will be some downpours developing during Thursday,
0:00:47 > 0:00:50probably eastern areas most likely to catch the heaviest ones,
0:00:50 > 0:00:52with some thunder and lightning,
0:00:52 > 0:00:54all the way up into eastern Scotland, in fact,
0:00:54 > 0:00:57but a lot better, I'm pleased to say, for Northern Ireland,
0:00:57 > 0:01:00which really was plagued by very heavy showers
0:01:00 > 0:01:01during the course of Wednesday.
0:01:01 > 0:01:04Let's have a look at the weather, then,
0:01:04 > 0:01:05Thursday night into Friday.
0:01:05 > 0:01:08Still some showers carrying on for a time, at least.
0:01:08 > 0:01:10The winds will fall light and with clearing skies,
0:01:10 > 0:01:12that means that the temperatures will dip away.
0:01:12 > 0:01:14In fact, there's a good chance of a bit of frost
0:01:14 > 0:01:17developing across Scotland and parts of northern England,
0:01:17 > 0:01:19possibly Northern Ireland too.
0:01:19 > 0:01:21That takes us into Friday.
0:01:21 > 0:01:23We've got yet another weather front heading our way.
0:01:23 > 0:01:26This is it here, approaching the far west of the British Isles
0:01:26 > 0:01:28during the course of Friday morning.
0:01:28 > 0:01:30Initially, actually, the weather on Friday
0:01:30 > 0:01:31isn't going to be bad at all.
0:01:31 > 0:01:33You'll be waking up to some sunshine.
0:01:33 > 0:01:36Yes, there might be still a few showers left over
0:01:36 > 0:01:38from the previous day, but on balance,
0:01:38 > 0:01:39not a bad start to the day or lunchtime.
0:01:39 > 0:01:43Then, this weather front sweeps in and brings the rain
0:01:43 > 0:01:45to places like Belfast, eventually Cardiff,
0:01:45 > 0:01:49down into Cornwall, Devon and the rest of the West Country.
0:01:49 > 0:01:50Then for the weekend,
0:01:50 > 0:01:52if you've been following our outlooks for the week ahead,
0:01:52 > 0:01:55we've been predicting that this area of low pressure
0:01:55 > 0:01:56is going to establish itself
0:01:56 > 0:01:59just to the south-west of our neighbourhood here.
0:01:59 > 0:02:00Practically, it'll get stuck here
0:02:00 > 0:02:03and that essentially means the weather will remain unsettled,
0:02:03 > 0:02:07but doesn't necessarily mean it'll rain every single day.
0:02:07 > 0:02:09Be prepared for rain, but there could be a bit of sunshine
0:02:09 > 0:02:11and perhaps even a little bit of warmth,
0:02:11 > 0:02:14because this low pressure will act to scoop up
0:02:14 > 0:02:17some of this warmth that we're seeing across the continent here
0:02:17 > 0:02:19and move it in the direction of the UK.
0:02:19 > 0:02:23Yes, we're going to be on the cusp of the colder and milder air.
0:02:23 > 0:02:25The reason why this weather pattern is stuck here
0:02:25 > 0:02:28is because of something that we were talking about yesterday,
0:02:28 > 0:02:30an omega block, so it's a pattern
0:02:30 > 0:02:32that we recognise in the atmosphere
0:02:32 > 0:02:35when the jet stream takes this omega shape
0:02:35 > 0:02:37from the Greek alphabet here.
0:02:37 > 0:02:41We have the unsettled, stuck weather across one side of the Atlantic
0:02:41 > 0:02:43and, actually, we get the same thing
0:02:43 > 0:02:45happening across North America,
0:02:45 > 0:02:46also a plunge of colder air here
0:02:46 > 0:02:48and they're getting their own unsettled weather,
0:02:48 > 0:02:51whereas Greenland and Iceland are actually getting
0:02:51 > 0:02:53a push of slightly milder air
0:02:53 > 0:02:56and these big amplitudes in the jet stream kind of get stuck
0:02:56 > 0:02:58and it takes a long time before they shift,
0:02:58 > 0:03:01so this low that we've been schematically describing
0:03:01 > 0:03:05for next week is still very much in our forecast, still features here,
0:03:05 > 0:03:08and brings spells of cloud and rain, but also, remember,
0:03:08 > 0:03:10a little bit of warmth coming in from the south as well,
0:03:10 > 0:03:12so next week stays unsettled,
0:03:12 > 0:03:15but it certainly won't be raining all the time.
0:03:15 > 0:03:17There might even be some warmth to that sunshine.
0:03:17 > 0:03:20Here's the summary for next week - sunshine and showers.
0:03:20 > 0:03:23Remember, the nights will be chilly where the sky is clear
0:03:23 > 0:03:26and just a hint of something a little bit warmer
0:03:26 > 0:03:28across southern areas of the UK.
0:03:28 > 0:03:29That's it, bye-bye.
