0:00:03 > 0:00:06Good evening. It's the time of day when we look forward at the trends
0:00:06 > 0:00:10the weather is likely to exhibit in the next six to ten days.
0:00:10 > 0:00:13Now, it's been typically April showery weather
0:00:13 > 0:00:15during the day on Thursday, some dramatic skylines.
0:00:15 > 0:00:19This was from Reading in Berkshire and we've had hail
0:00:19 > 0:00:21and thunder and lightning thrown into the showers,
0:00:21 > 0:00:23but they are starting to ease away now
0:00:23 > 0:00:24and the night promises to be drier
0:00:24 > 0:00:26for most of us, with lighter winds.
0:00:26 > 0:00:29That'll be key, I think, tomorrow for how it feels.
0:00:29 > 0:00:31But also overnight, it will allow some frost,
0:00:31 > 0:00:32frost in the north and the west
0:00:32 > 0:00:34and a touch of ground frost elsewhere as well
0:00:34 > 0:00:37in the countryside. Possibly even a bit of fog first thing,
0:00:37 > 0:00:39but that should clear quite quickly
0:00:39 > 0:00:42and a much more promising start to the day, until the afternoon,
0:00:42 > 0:00:44when the rain returns to Northern Ireland
0:00:44 > 0:00:46and western fringes of the mainland,
0:00:46 > 0:00:49but for the bulk of mainland Scotland, an awful lot of dry
0:00:49 > 0:00:51and bright weather around, a little bit of sunshine,
0:00:51 > 0:00:53lighter winds making it feel more pleasant
0:00:53 > 0:00:54than it has in recent days.
0:00:54 > 0:00:56Similarly so across northern England
0:00:56 > 0:00:57and the bulk of England and Wales.
0:00:57 > 0:00:59It's just, as you can see,
0:00:59 > 0:01:00fringes like Pembrokeshire
0:01:00 > 0:01:02into Anglesey, the Llyn Peninsula
0:01:02 > 0:01:05and Cornwall starting to pick up the cloudier zone
0:01:05 > 0:01:06with some patchy rain,
0:01:06 > 0:01:08but with lengthier dry spells and lighter winds,
0:01:08 > 0:01:12it won't feel as chilly as it has done the last two days.
0:01:12 > 0:01:14As we go through Friday evening and overnight,
0:01:14 > 0:01:16that progresses eastwards,
0:01:16 > 0:01:18so a splatter of rain for many of us,
0:01:18 > 0:01:19but it's followed by colder air,
0:01:19 > 0:01:21so we could see a smattering of snow
0:01:21 > 0:01:24over the Pennines and the Grampians before that clears away
0:01:24 > 0:01:26and certainly so in the showers following on behind
0:01:26 > 0:01:28through Northern Ireland, across Wales.
0:01:28 > 0:01:31The south-west moors could see some wintry weather as well,
0:01:31 > 0:01:33possibly into Staffordshire, the Peak District,
0:01:33 > 0:01:36but there'll be some sunshine, of course, between those showers
0:01:36 > 0:01:38and the sun is getting quite strong
0:01:38 > 0:01:39at this time of year as well.
0:01:39 > 0:01:41So if you're outside the wind in the sunshine,
0:01:41 > 0:01:43outside the showers, pleasant enough.
0:01:43 > 0:01:45But, obviously, it's a chilly day,
0:01:45 > 0:01:47because the air is so cold.
0:01:47 > 0:01:49Notice our weather system still stuck in the north on Sunday,
0:01:49 > 0:01:51still there for the Northern Isles
0:01:51 > 0:01:52and our low pressure is close by
0:01:52 > 0:01:55to the south and west, so there will be some drier weather.
0:01:55 > 0:01:57At the moment, it looks like it'll be in central areas,
0:01:57 > 0:02:00but by that stage, we're starting to pick up an easterly wind.
0:02:00 > 0:02:02That is something that will stay with us
0:02:02 > 0:02:04in one shape or form for the next week or so, really,
0:02:04 > 0:02:07because despite clearing our weather front away,
0:02:07 > 0:02:11this low pressure anchors itself towards the south and the west.
0:02:11 > 0:02:14Some fairly unusual weather at the moment,
0:02:14 > 0:02:15because our jet stream,
0:02:15 > 0:02:17as Tom was explaining yesterday,
0:02:17 > 0:02:19is in what's called an omega block,
0:02:19 > 0:02:20so you've got really cold air
0:02:20 > 0:02:22diving across the United States,
0:02:22 > 0:02:26then the southerly jet stream is pushing the warmer air northwards,
0:02:26 > 0:02:29then we're on the cold side of the jet at the moment,
0:02:29 > 0:02:32so we've got cold air pooling across the UK,
0:02:32 > 0:02:34hence we get some rather big showers.
0:02:34 > 0:02:37But it's unusual that you get this situation
0:02:37 > 0:02:40where the jet stream ties in where we have the warm
0:02:40 > 0:02:42and the cold air, but that's going to be quite significant,
0:02:42 > 0:02:44because although we have cold air across the UK,
0:02:44 > 0:02:47at this time of year, the sun is getting stronger,
0:02:47 > 0:02:49as I might have mentioned, and that's warming the continent,
0:02:49 > 0:02:53so as we start to pull in more of a south-easterly wind here
0:02:53 > 0:02:56through the coming week, things will warm up,
0:02:56 > 0:02:59slowly but surely, in the south.
0:02:59 > 0:03:02But where we keep the more easterly wind coming over
0:03:02 > 0:03:04what is a cold North Sea,
0:03:04 > 0:03:06the sea is at its coldest at this time of year,
0:03:06 > 0:03:10it will clearly stay chilly here, with temperatures below par.
0:03:10 > 0:03:11With that low pressure close by,
0:03:11 > 0:03:13that's going to continue to feed in showers
0:03:13 > 0:03:15or longer spells of rain,
0:03:15 > 0:03:17so it stays unsettled for the outlook,
0:03:17 > 0:03:20with further showers around, some dramatic skylines,
0:03:20 > 0:03:22but where you have the sunny spells
0:03:22 > 0:03:26between the showers, it'll feel really quite warm in southern areas,
0:03:26 > 0:03:28but there'll be some chilly nights, of course,
0:03:28 > 0:03:30as the cloud melts away. Bye-bye.
