0:00:02 > 0:00:04After a rather wintery start to the weekend,

0:00:04 > 0:00:06things warmed up a little bit on Sunday, but this spring

0:00:06 > 0:00:09seems to be a case of one step forward and two steps back

0:00:09 > 0:00:10as we'll see in a moment.

0:00:10 > 0:00:13Not a bad start to the new working week in most places,

0:00:13 > 0:00:15although a weak weather front

0:00:15 > 0:00:18will topple its way southwards bringing some lightish showers.

0:00:18 > 0:00:21Most places, actually, will stay dry with increasing amounts

0:00:21 > 0:00:24of sunshine behind that for parts of northern England,

0:00:24 > 0:00:27Northern Ireland and Scotland through the second half of the day.

0:00:27 > 0:00:30Temperatures - 10 to 12 degrees, typically.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33There will be a blustery wind across the far north of Scotland,

0:00:33 > 0:00:35making it quite chilly here.

0:00:35 > 0:00:38Fast forward to Tuesday, a touch of frost for Scotland,

0:00:38 > 0:00:40north-east England, but here the best of the sunshine I think.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43Further south and west, more cloud around.

0:00:43 > 0:00:45But, again, just the odd lightish shower.

0:00:45 > 0:00:48Most places will once more stay dry with fairly light winds.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51It should feel pretty pleasant, I think.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54High pressure dominating the weather for the next few days.

0:00:54 > 0:00:55More or less, slap bang on top of us.

0:00:55 > 0:00:58That's going to keep the rain-bearing weather fronts at bay

0:00:58 > 0:01:00for the time being.

0:01:00 > 0:01:04High pressure, more often than not, translates into dry weather.

0:01:04 > 0:01:06So, for the next few days, I'm pretty optimistic

0:01:06 > 0:01:09that in the sunshine it should feel pretty pleasant.

0:01:09 > 0:01:11Although, overnight, where the skies are clear,

0:01:11 > 0:01:12it will be quite chilly

0:01:12 > 0:01:15with an ongoing risk of a frost in some rural areas.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17Let me show you a chart for Wednesday.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20You can see most places dry, having a nice day.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23Increasingly breezy and cloudy across southern counties.

0:01:23 > 0:01:28But the rain will hold off and again temperatures slowly creeping up.

0:01:28 > 0:01:30Mid teens in a good few places.

0:01:30 > 0:01:32From Wednesday into Thursday, we've got to keep our eye

0:01:32 > 0:01:35on this approaching weather front from the south,

0:01:35 > 0:01:37with an increasing chance of some showery rain

0:01:37 > 0:01:40initially across the more south-western parts of England.

0:01:40 > 0:01:42Again, quite a blustery wind here. Most other places,

0:01:42 > 0:01:45though, having another fine day with sunshine

0:01:45 > 0:01:49and 15, maybe 16 or 17 degrees in the best of the sunshine,

0:01:49 > 0:01:51with some shelter from that wind.

0:01:51 > 0:01:55As we go from Thursday into Friday, it does look as if this front

0:01:55 > 0:01:57will edge up into southern and perhaps some central parts

0:01:57 > 0:01:59of England and Wales.

0:01:59 > 0:02:01It could end up a wet day here,

0:02:01 > 0:02:03whereas the further north it stays drier,

0:02:03 > 0:02:05but the winds beginning to come down from the north

0:02:05 > 0:02:08and the temperatures beginning to slide down as well.

0:02:08 > 0:02:11That is a sign of things to come.

0:02:11 > 0:02:14As we approach the weekend, this front turns around

0:02:14 > 0:02:16and heads back southwards again.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19We look to the north, this is an Arctic front, coming down -

0:02:19 > 0:02:21as the name implies, from the Arctic -

0:02:21 > 0:02:24turning showers across Scotland to sleet and snow.

0:02:24 > 0:02:27We're going to see another plunge of blue.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29Yes, the blue coming down from the Arctic,

0:02:29 > 0:02:33and it's all courtesy of a meandering jet stream.

0:02:33 > 0:02:37Whenever you get a meander, which sends warm air up over Greenland,

0:02:37 > 0:02:40we get a corresponding dip in the jet stream,

0:02:40 > 0:02:43which sends cold air down across the UK,

0:02:43 > 0:02:46and it's exactly what we're going to have next weekend.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49That sort of pattern is going to persist into the early

0:02:49 > 0:02:51part of next week as well.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54And with low pressure in close attendance,

0:02:54 > 0:02:57that does give the risk of some wintery showers

0:02:57 > 0:03:00and some of those showers could be quite heavy and possibly prolonged.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03So, yeah, the risk of some snow is a fairly wintery prospect

0:03:03 > 0:03:05through the early part of next week.

0:03:05 > 0:03:08Certainly cold, there'll be some wintery showers knocking about.

0:03:08 > 0:03:10Some sunshine, yes, but gardeners take note -

0:03:10 > 0:03:13some fairly widespread frosts at night.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16Now, how unusual is this for so late in the season, I hear you ask?

0:03:16 > 0:03:18Not that unusual.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21If you cast your minds back 35 years,

0:03:21 > 0:03:23blizzards swept across the UK.

0:03:23 > 0:03:27I'm not expecting it to get as bad as this, hopefully.

0:03:27 > 0:03:29Darren Bett will update you tomorrow.
