0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello there, as we head towards the end of April,

0:00:04 > 0:00:07we're well and truly into spring now, but the weather can be

0:00:07 > 0:00:10a little bit of tease at this time of year - on the one hand it giveth,

0:00:10 > 0:00:12and that's exactly what happened on Thursday -

0:00:12 > 0:00:15warmest day of the year so far, 20 degrees in Porthmadog,

0:00:15 > 0:00:1968 Fahrenheit, but it can also taketh away.

0:00:19 > 0:00:23And just look at next week, it's going to feel noticeably cooler,

0:00:23 > 0:00:26yes, with even a dusting of snow to the tops of higher ground.

0:00:26 > 0:00:28For the here and now, though,

0:00:28 > 0:00:30we've got some contrasting weather conditions around as well.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33Sunshine across Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland

0:00:33 > 0:00:36but a cooler feel here, and there'll be some outbreaks of rain.

0:00:36 > 0:00:38Fairly persistent across the south-west,

0:00:38 > 0:00:42light and patchy through southern England and the Midlands.

0:00:42 > 0:00:46But temperatures down on where they have been in recent days for some.

0:00:46 > 0:00:49And the reason being this colder air that's spilling in from

0:00:49 > 0:00:53the Arctic and that is going to descend further south

0:00:53 > 0:00:56as we move towards the weekend. A noticeable change in the story,

0:00:56 > 0:00:59not only for the weekend but also into next week.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02So, yes, it's going to feel colder - there will be some sunshine

0:01:02 > 0:01:04and showers, turning increasingly wintry

0:01:04 > 0:01:07and also at the same time, with clearer skies we could see

0:01:07 > 0:01:11widespread night-time frosts. So that weather front meanders its way

0:01:11 > 0:01:14slowly south, it will be slow to clear across Channel coasts

0:01:14 > 0:01:18and then a day of sunny spells. Most of the showers on Saturday

0:01:18 > 0:01:21across the North Sea coast where that brisk breeze will be

0:01:21 > 0:01:24making it feel much cooler. And to higher ground there will be

0:01:24 > 0:01:27some sleet and snow as well. But there'll also be some sunshine...

0:01:27 > 0:01:30But the difference will be the feel of the story -

0:01:30 > 0:01:346 to 13 degrees at the very best. And as we move out of Saturday

0:01:34 > 0:01:38into Sunday, that's when we're likely to see the clearer skies

0:01:38 > 0:01:41and the frost descend across the country.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44So, it's going to be a chilly start to Sunday morning -

0:01:44 > 0:01:46lows could get down to minus 4 degrees.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49Certainly, gardeners take note and if you're taking part

0:01:49 > 0:01:52in the London Marathon, you might need a couple of extra bin bags

0:01:52 > 0:01:54for waiting on the starting line.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57And a very chilly start first thing on Sunday morning,

0:01:57 > 0:01:58with the risk of some showers.

0:01:58 > 0:02:02Now, turning increasingly wintry to lower levels in the north.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04Hail could be an issue in the south-east corner

0:02:04 > 0:02:08by the end of Sunday afternoon. As we move into Monday, again we've

0:02:08 > 0:02:11still got this cold, Arctic flow descending on us,

0:02:11 > 0:02:14with most of the showers across the north and east.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17There will be some snow falling now, even at lower levels,

0:02:17 > 0:02:20feeling quite cold here. But in a little more shelter into the west,

0:02:20 > 0:02:24perhaps not quite as bad. Now, the showers will be enhanced

0:02:24 > 0:02:27overnight into Tuesday by these troughs and that could

0:02:27 > 0:02:30leave some snow, some slushy deposits at lower levels

0:02:30 > 0:02:33first thing on Tuesday. But with a little bit of sunshine,

0:02:33 > 0:02:36it should help to thaw that quite rapidly away.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39But it's going to be a cold day. Again, the further west

0:02:39 > 0:02:43the best of the sunshine - highs 6 to 13 degrees.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46"What on earth is going on?" I hear you ask.

0:02:46 > 0:02:50Well, there's an area of low pressure

0:02:50 > 0:02:52and it's centred into the North Sea. Now, around that low,

0:02:52 > 0:02:55the winds swing in a anticlockwise direction -

0:02:55 > 0:02:59it's dragging in this colder, Arctic flow, but as we move out of

0:02:59 > 0:03:02April into the early stages of May, it looks as though this

0:03:02 > 0:03:05high pressure is set to build from the west.

0:03:05 > 0:03:08And around the high, the winds swing in a clockwise direction,

0:03:08 > 0:03:11turning back to a westerly. So, a milder direction.

0:03:11 > 0:03:14So, potentially we could be back to square one.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17It looks as though, by the early half of May there's the potential

0:03:17 > 0:03:19for something a little milder, a little drier,

0:03:19 > 0:03:22with fewer showers and certainly not wintry.

0:03:22 > 0:03:26And even, fingers crossed, back to some decent sunny spells.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28I'd like to end on a positive note, take care.
