0:00:03 > 0:00:05Hello. This has been a week of temperature contrasts -

0:00:05 > 0:00:08warm in any spring sunshine, cold in the cloud and the wind.

0:00:08 > 0:00:11And that's the story as we go over the next few days.

0:00:11 > 0:00:14In actual fact, for the start of this weekend,

0:00:14 > 0:00:16it will gradually start to feel colder,

0:00:16 > 0:00:19we'll see sunshine and showers, mostly out towards the east,

0:00:19 > 0:00:21but through the night, with clearer skies,

0:00:21 > 0:00:23frost could be more of an issue.

0:00:23 > 0:00:25This graph shows where we are.

0:00:25 > 0:00:27At the end of April and into May

0:00:27 > 0:00:29temperatures across the UK

0:00:29 > 0:00:31average out at about 14 degrees.

0:00:31 > 0:00:35For the start of this weekend we're just below average in terms of feel,

0:00:35 > 0:00:37by the time we get to Tuesday and Wednesday,

0:00:37 > 0:00:39a really colder feel here,

0:00:39 > 0:00:43before we revert back to around just below average

0:00:43 > 0:00:45into next weekend.

0:00:45 > 0:00:47More on that to come in just a moment,

0:00:47 > 0:00:49but for the start of the weekend,

0:00:49 > 0:00:51high pressure's still influencing the story.

0:00:51 > 0:00:55We've still got this northerly flow so an exposed North Sea coast,

0:00:55 > 0:00:57that's where it's always going to feel colder,

0:00:57 > 0:00:59and that's where the risk of showers will be as well.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02A good deal of usable weather, certainly further west -

0:01:02 > 0:01:03dry and predominantly sunny,

0:01:03 > 0:01:07and here, in a little more shelter, it won't feel quite as bad.

0:01:07 > 0:01:08Particularly for the south-west,

0:01:08 > 0:01:10where we had a lot of cloud and rain on Friday -

0:01:10 > 0:01:1212 or 13 degrees the high.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15But on those exposed North Sea coasts,

0:01:15 > 0:01:176 to 9 degrees at the very best.

0:01:17 > 0:01:21The clearer skies dominate through Saturday night into Sunday,

0:01:21 > 0:01:23a widespread frost likely in rural parts

0:01:23 > 0:01:26as temperatures fall below freezing, and that is going to be

0:01:26 > 0:01:29a shock to the system if you're up and off early on,

0:01:29 > 0:01:33especially for those waiting on the start line for the London Marathon.

0:01:33 > 0:01:35It's going to be a sunny start, but a chilly one.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38Eventually on Sunday we could see a little more cloud

0:01:38 > 0:01:40and some showers spilling down from the north-west,

0:01:40 > 0:01:43and it will feel a little bit colder as well on Sunday.

0:01:43 > 0:01:48Top temperatures likely to be between 6 and 12 degrees.

0:01:48 > 0:01:54Now, the real cold air set to arrive as we move into Monday and Tuesday

0:01:54 > 0:01:55behind this weather front

0:01:55 > 0:01:57that's slowly meandering its way steadily southwards.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00I suspect it will be a slightly windier day as well

0:02:00 > 0:02:02as we go into Monday -

0:02:02 > 0:02:05that's just going to exacerbate that colder feel to things.

0:02:05 > 0:02:07Again, sunny spells and scattered showers,

0:02:07 > 0:02:11but we run the risk of seeing these showers turn increasingly wintry

0:02:11 > 0:02:15at lower levels, particularly through the night - 6 to 12 degrees.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18So there could be some slushy deposits first thing in the morning.

0:02:18 > 0:02:21If you get some sunshine, that'll melt it away pretty readily.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24We're not expecting it to cause too much of an issue,

0:02:24 > 0:02:27but it's worth bearing in mind that we could see a rash of showers,

0:02:27 > 0:02:29some of these turning increasingly wintry,

0:02:29 > 0:02:33and add on that cold northerly wind, it's going to continue to feel

0:02:33 > 0:02:35pretty disappointing for this time of year.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38Not much change in the weather story as well as we go into Wednesday -

0:02:38 > 0:02:41we still keep the wind direction from the north,

0:02:41 > 0:02:43we still run the risk of some showers.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46But the showers should be few and further between, I suspect,

0:02:46 > 0:02:50on Wednesday, and again, highs of 7 to 13 degrees.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53How long is this weather pattern set to last?

0:02:53 > 0:02:57Well, it does look as though we could see a change into early May.

0:02:57 > 0:02:59Now, we've had this amplification in the jet stream

0:02:59 > 0:03:03and it's been sitting in a northerly direction right across the country,

0:03:03 > 0:03:04dragging in this colder Arctic air.

0:03:04 > 0:03:07The mild air out to the west all the time,

0:03:07 > 0:03:11it looks as though high pressure is set to build from the west,

0:03:11 > 0:03:13an Atlantic influence returning,

0:03:13 > 0:03:16and so the winds will swing more round to a westerly

0:03:16 > 0:03:19as we approach the early half of May.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22So fingers crossed, it looks as though we're set for something

0:03:22 > 0:03:23just that little bit milder, drier.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26There will be some showers around, but also some sunshine,

0:03:26 > 0:03:28and feeling better in the sun.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30That's it - enjoy.
