0:00:01 > 0:00:04Hello there. Well, it was a cold weekend across the board.
0:00:04 > 0:00:06And it was a cold start to the new week.
0:00:06 > 0:00:10We've got this arctic air across pretty much all parts of the UK.
0:00:10 > 0:00:12However, the sun is still strong at this time of the year,
0:00:12 > 0:00:14and even if the air is cold,
0:00:14 > 0:00:16get out of the wind, and it feels pleasant enough.
0:00:16 > 0:00:18This is the view from one of our Weather Watchers
0:00:18 > 0:00:19in the Isles of Scilly on Monday.
0:00:19 > 0:00:22But in the Highlands, the daffodils struggling to stand upright
0:00:22 > 0:00:24because of the strength of the wind,
0:00:24 > 0:00:27and yes, there's some snow in that cold air as well.
0:00:27 > 0:00:28Now, we've got low pressure
0:00:28 > 0:00:29to the East side of the UK,
0:00:29 > 0:00:30high pressure to the West.
0:00:30 > 0:00:33The resultant airflow is from the North,
0:00:33 > 0:00:34and that air is coming
0:00:34 > 0:00:35all the way down from the Arctic,
0:00:35 > 0:00:38so yes, cold air firmly in place across the UK,
0:00:38 > 0:00:41hence the risk of those wintry showers.
0:00:41 > 0:00:43And we've got further wintry showers
0:00:43 > 0:00:44through the morning.
0:00:44 > 0:00:45The North-east of England,
0:00:45 > 0:00:48more particularly into Northern Scotland.
0:00:48 > 0:00:49Elsewhere, some spells of
0:00:49 > 0:00:50sunshine to start the day,
0:00:50 > 0:00:51but cloud amounts will increase,
0:00:51 > 0:00:53and we'll see a good scattering
0:00:53 > 0:00:54of showers developing.
0:00:54 > 0:00:55Showers through the afternoon
0:00:55 > 0:00:56could be heavy,
0:00:56 > 0:00:58with some hail and some thunder mixed in.
0:00:58 > 0:01:00Temperatures, on the face of it, 7-10 or 11 degrees,
0:01:00 > 0:01:02but what you have to factor in,
0:01:02 > 0:01:03the wind is going to feel
0:01:03 > 0:01:05like it's in single digits across the board,
0:01:05 > 0:01:07a particularly cold feel to things
0:01:07 > 0:01:09along that North Sea coast.
0:01:09 > 0:01:11The strong winds will gradually ease
0:01:11 > 0:01:13as the low drifts away towards the near continent.
0:01:13 > 0:01:14The isobars open up,
0:01:14 > 0:01:16but it will be cold to start Wednesday.
0:01:16 > 0:01:18We will see a frost roughly from the Midlands Northwards,
0:01:18 > 0:01:20but a good deal of bright weather
0:01:20 > 0:01:21early on Wednesday.
0:01:21 > 0:01:23Again, cloud amounts increase into the afternoon,
0:01:23 > 0:01:25and there will be a scattering of showers.
0:01:25 > 0:01:27Some good spells of sunshine to be had as well,
0:01:27 > 0:01:29and not quite as windy.
0:01:29 > 0:01:30Maybe not feeling quite so cold,
0:01:30 > 0:01:32but temperatures still in single figures
0:01:32 > 0:01:34for most parts of the UK.
0:01:34 > 0:01:36We might just about get into doubles in the centre of London.
0:01:36 > 0:01:39On Wednesday night, we have to watch out for this system,
0:01:39 > 0:01:41because it will move into some fairly cold air,
0:01:41 > 0:01:42and there's potential for snow
0:01:42 > 0:01:44on the leading edge of that system.
0:01:44 > 0:01:46As I say, that is one to watch out for
0:01:46 > 0:01:48on Thursday morning in particular.
0:01:48 > 0:01:49Thursday itself, there will be
0:01:49 > 0:01:51a scattering of showers,
0:01:51 > 0:01:52maybe some long spells of rain for a time
0:01:52 > 0:01:55in East Anglia and towards Lincolnshire,
0:01:55 > 0:01:57and a keen breeze blowing in along the South coast.
0:01:57 > 0:01:58And again, many places,
0:01:58 > 0:02:00we'll be seeing those temperatures
0:02:00 > 0:02:02in single figures through Thursday afternoon.
0:02:02 > 0:02:03On into Friday,
0:02:03 > 0:02:05and the winds are that bit lighter.
0:02:05 > 0:02:07We've still got some weather fronts
0:02:07 > 0:02:08not too far away from the UK,
0:02:08 > 0:02:09and this one in particular,
0:02:09 > 0:02:11towards the Southeastern corner,
0:02:11 > 0:02:12looks like it could bring a fair bit of cloud
0:02:12 > 0:02:15and outbreaks of rain towards the South-east of England,
0:02:15 > 0:02:17towards East Anglia, and maybe some outbreaks of rain
0:02:17 > 0:02:18elsewhere across the Southern UK.
0:02:18 > 0:02:20It looks like the best of
0:02:20 > 0:02:21the dry, brighter weather is probably
0:02:21 > 0:02:23in the North-west of Scotland,
0:02:23 > 0:02:24and the winds will be light here as well.
0:02:24 > 0:02:27But again, many places seeing temperatures in single figures.
0:02:27 > 0:02:28Might just about get into doubles
0:02:28 > 0:02:30for Cardiff, London, and for Plymouth.
0:02:30 > 0:02:32Then on into the start of the weekend,
0:02:32 > 0:02:34many central and Eastern areas will start off
0:02:34 > 0:02:35on a pretty reasonable note,
0:02:35 > 0:02:38but cloud and rain is gathering in the West.
0:02:38 > 0:02:40We are beginning to see a change by this stage,
0:02:40 > 0:02:42a change to more Westerly winds,
0:02:42 > 0:02:45and a return to the influence of the Atlantic,
0:02:45 > 0:02:48but this week, for most of the time, we've got this blocking pattern.
0:02:48 > 0:02:50An omega block. If you know your Greek alphabet,
0:02:50 > 0:02:52you'll recognise the shape.
0:02:52 > 0:02:55Low pressure to the East of the UK, high-pressure to the West,
0:02:55 > 0:02:57and the resultant airflow comes down from the North,
0:02:57 > 0:03:01so hence the cold feel this week, but as you get onto next week,
0:03:01 > 0:03:04the jet stream looks like it will be coming in from the West,
0:03:04 > 0:03:06bringing in much more changeable weather.
0:03:06 > 0:03:09High pressure to the South of the UK might just build in,
0:03:09 > 0:03:10keeping things relatively quiet,
0:03:10 > 0:03:12but low pressure to the Northwest
0:03:12 > 0:03:14looks like it will keep things fairly unsettled.
0:03:14 > 0:03:16So as we get on into early May,
0:03:16 > 0:03:18with those Westerly winds developing,
0:03:18 > 0:03:21certainly a lot less chilly than it has been,
0:03:21 > 0:03:22but still fairly unsettled,
0:03:22 > 0:03:24mainly in the North-west of the UK.
0:03:24 > 0:03:26There will be some sunshine to be had,
0:03:26 > 0:03:29and it looks as if most of the time, it will be driest in the South.
