0:00:02 > 0:00:05Come the weekend, most of us will be dry but cool.

0:00:05 > 0:00:07At the moment, though, the story is one of wet or warm

0:00:07 > 0:00:10depending on where you are across the UK.

0:00:10 > 0:00:12Let's start off with the warm first of all.

0:00:12 > 0:00:14It was a stunning day on Monday across the Highlands of Scotland,

0:00:14 > 0:00:17this beautiful picture taken by one of our weather watchers -

0:00:17 > 0:00:1827 degrees.

0:00:18 > 0:00:21At the other end of the UK, though, it was a very different story.

0:00:21 > 0:00:23A very wet afternoon across parts of Devon

0:00:23 > 0:00:25and further wet weather to come on Tuesday across

0:00:25 > 0:00:29the southern half of the UK, some heavy and thundery bursts

0:00:29 > 0:00:32churning their way slowly northwards and westwards.

0:00:32 > 0:00:35In contrast, across the northern half of the UK it will be dry

0:00:35 > 0:00:37with plenty more of that very warm sunshine

0:00:37 > 0:00:40particularly once more across Scotland.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43The Western Highlands and Islands probably warmest of all -

0:00:43 > 0:00:46mid-20s here - but as we've seen over the last couple of days,

0:00:46 > 0:00:49with an easterly breeze those North Sea coasts will be

0:00:49 > 0:00:51a good deal cooler - just 12 or 13 degrees.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54But a lot of sunshine across Scotland.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57Northern Ireland fine and warm, most of northern England too,

0:00:57 > 0:00:59but that rain will be edging up

0:00:59 > 0:01:02into parts of South Yorkshire, Cheshire, maybe Lancashire.

0:01:02 > 0:01:05This is four o'clock. Plenty of wet weather for the Midlands.

0:01:05 > 0:01:07It might brighten up across parts of south-east England

0:01:07 > 0:01:09but don't be fooled -

0:01:09 > 0:01:12further heavy showers are quite possible. Quite humid, thundery air.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15Wet weather for Wales and south-west England so if you are on the road

0:01:15 > 0:01:18through Tuesday, take it steady - there will be a fair bit of

0:01:18 > 0:01:20surface water and spray around.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22Check out your BBC local radio station.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24Now, as we go through the evening and night,

0:01:24 > 0:01:27the rain will continue to churn its way further northwards into

0:01:27 > 0:01:29northern England, Northern Ireland too,

0:01:29 > 0:01:30where it will kind of grind to a halt.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33The exact position of that a little bit uncertain.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36Drier on either side and heavy showers across southern areas

0:01:36 > 0:01:38again with high humidities.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41Best of the sunshine once more across Scotland.

0:01:41 > 0:01:42Where you see prolonged sunshine,

0:01:42 > 0:01:44again temperatures doing pretty well.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46Where it's raining for much of the day,

0:01:46 > 0:01:47it will be a good deal cooler.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50As I mentioned, that front kind of grinding to a halt and then

0:01:50 > 0:01:54it is going to begin to head southwards again later on this week.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57The reason for that is northerly winds setting in.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00Northerly winds are never all that warm and as you can see by the blue

0:02:00 > 0:02:03coming down the North Sea it will turn a good deal cooler.

0:02:03 > 0:02:05Bit of a shock to the system for some of us

0:02:05 > 0:02:07after all the warm whether and certainly,

0:02:07 > 0:02:09temperatures will be down by several degrees

0:02:09 > 0:02:12initially across the more northern and eastern parts of the UK,

0:02:12 > 0:02:14where there will be a fresh breeze,

0:02:14 > 0:02:16fair bit of cloud and maybe the odd shower.

0:02:16 > 0:02:20Warmth holding on across the far south-west for a time but the trend

0:02:20 > 0:02:23will be, as we hit the weekend, for temperatures to be sliding away.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26Still quite breezy near the North Sea coast,

0:02:26 > 0:02:29maybe the odd shower, but as you can see, a lot of dry weather.

0:02:29 > 0:02:33If you can get out of the breeze and in the sunshine, although

0:02:33 > 0:02:35temperatures will be lower than recently, it shouldn't feel too bad.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38So, if you are heading out camping, for example,

0:02:38 > 0:02:40you will be fine by day

0:02:40 > 0:02:43but overnight, with clear skies, expect some chilly ones.

0:02:43 > 0:02:47Not far off freezing, I reckon, through this weekend overnight.

0:02:47 > 0:02:50Still got that northerly breeze and I'm going to move to one side.

0:02:50 > 0:02:54Low pressure trying to come in off the Atlantic but not

0:02:54 > 0:02:57really getting very far through this weekend, hence the dry prospect.

0:02:57 > 0:03:01But what we are expecting as we go into the early part of next week

0:03:01 > 0:03:04is for the jet stream to start to liven up again

0:03:04 > 0:03:07and push that low pressure towards us. How quickly it does that

0:03:07 > 0:03:11through next week is still open to some doubt but eventually,

0:03:11 > 0:03:13I think, low pressure will arrive on our doorstep

0:03:13 > 0:03:16and bring some more unsettled and at times wetter weather.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19So, to sum up next week, certainly a fine start.

0:03:19 > 0:03:21Rain on the horizon but how quickly it arrives,

0:03:21 > 0:03:23again, a little bit of a question -

0:03:23 > 0:03:26it depends how quickly that jet stream kind of wakes up.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29But I will update you again with the timings on that tomorrow.
