0:00:03 > 0:00:06Good news. We are confident about developments up till the weekend.

0:00:06 > 0:00:08A lot of dry weather on the horizon.

0:00:08 > 0:00:10What happens next week is hugely uncertain,

0:00:10 > 0:00:12as we will see in a moment.

0:00:12 > 0:00:14Thundery downpours have blighted some southern parts of the UK

0:00:14 > 0:00:15over the last couple of days

0:00:15 > 0:00:18but that threat diminishes as low pressure eases southwards.

0:00:18 > 0:00:19We look to the north.

0:00:19 > 0:00:23There is a cold front approaching and that will bring chillier

0:00:23 > 0:00:25air to all of us over the next couple of days.

0:00:25 > 0:00:27It is approaching the north of Scotland during

0:00:27 > 0:00:29the course of the day, bringing patchy rain here,

0:00:29 > 0:00:32the odd shower to the south from that low pressure.

0:00:32 > 0:00:35But in between, a lot of fine weather on Thursday,

0:00:35 > 0:00:36with some pleasant sunshine.

0:00:36 > 0:00:39In comes the cold front, bringing cloud and the odd shower

0:00:39 > 0:00:42and pretty low temperatures to Shetland. Just eight degrees.

0:00:42 > 0:00:44Some of the cloud filtering on to north-eastern coasts,

0:00:44 > 0:00:46keeping it cool.

0:00:46 > 0:00:49But most places in the sunshine further west will have a nice

0:00:49 > 0:00:53day, up into the low 20s in a good few places, a marked improvement

0:00:53 > 0:00:56on the last couple of days across southern and central areas.

0:00:56 > 0:00:58Still the odd shower across the south-west

0:00:58 > 0:01:02but they will be isolated compared with recent days.

0:01:02 > 0:01:05Through the evening and night, this cold front heads southwards.

0:01:05 > 0:01:09Not much weather on it, maybe the odd shower but importantly,

0:01:09 > 0:01:12it will introduce notably chillier air through Friday across many

0:01:12 > 0:01:14northern areas.

0:01:14 > 0:01:16By Friday afternoon, some parts of Scotland and north-east

0:01:16 > 0:01:19England will be struggling to get out of single figures.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22One more day of relative warmth further south,

0:01:22 > 0:01:26we might just scrape 19 or even 20 degrees.

0:01:26 > 0:01:30But as we head into night-time, it will turn cold for all of us.

0:01:30 > 0:01:35Some of us on Saturday morning could be waking up to a touch of frost.

0:01:35 > 0:01:37However, I am optimistic that through this weekend,

0:01:37 > 0:01:39a lot of us will see a lot of fine weather

0:01:39 > 0:01:42because high pressure will be building in.

0:01:42 > 0:01:45Although the air is cool, there will be a lot of sunshine.

0:01:45 > 0:01:47A bit of sunshine makes all the difference, doesn't it?

0:01:47 > 0:01:51So for the weekend, to sum up, a lot of dry weather.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54In the sunshine it will feel quite pleasant but a reminder

0:01:54 > 0:01:57those nights will be cold, with an ongoing risk of frost.

0:01:57 > 0:01:59Here's Saturday's picture,

0:01:59 > 0:02:01still that northerly wind going down the east coast.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04You will feel that if you're exposed to that wind.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07In the sunshine, further west,

0:02:07 > 0:02:1014 or 15 degrees actually shouldn't feel too bad.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12More of the same on Sunday.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14We still have that northerly breeze affecting more eastern

0:02:14 > 0:02:16coastal areas so coolest here, warmest

0:02:16 > 0:02:20and sunniest the further south and west you go.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22Not much changing as we start the new working week.

0:02:22 > 0:02:24That northerly breeze is weakening all the time

0:02:24 > 0:02:28so light winds across the country, dry just about nationwide

0:02:28 > 0:02:31and in the sunshine, feeling pretty good.

0:02:31 > 0:02:32It'll feel even better, I think,

0:02:32 > 0:02:35as we go through the next couple of days. A warming trend.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38We lose the blues and we gain the yellows.

0:02:38 > 0:02:42What happens next is very uncertain, as I hinted at the start.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44If you have been watching my broadcasts the last

0:02:44 > 0:02:47couple of days, you will know a lot hinges on this area of low

0:02:47 > 0:02:50pressure developing in the western Atlantic.

0:02:50 > 0:02:55The track of that will be guided by this little kink in the jet stream.

0:02:55 > 0:03:00The exact shape of that kink will be all important.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02Depending on the shape of that kink,

0:03:02 > 0:03:05the low pressure could track its way to the north, it could

0:03:05 > 0:03:10track its way to the south, or it could head straight towards us.

0:03:10 > 0:03:12It does look as if that low pressure will be

0:03:12 > 0:03:15heading in our direction later on next week.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18After a dry start to the week, there is

0:03:18 > 0:03:22an increasing chance of some rain developing from the west.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24But watch this space for details.

0:03:24 > 0:03:26Then it looks as if, as we head into the end of May,

0:03:26 > 0:03:30the weather might begin to settle down and begin to warm up as well.

0:03:30 > 0:03:31We'll update you tomorrow.
