0:00:03 > 0:00:05Hello. Oh, the irony. Wednesday, 1st June,

0:00:05 > 0:00:08the official day of meteorological summer,

0:00:08 > 0:00:12but just look at some of the weather we've been seeing this week.

0:00:12 > 0:00:14This was Cambridgeshire yesterday -

0:00:14 > 0:00:17lots of heavy rain, a cold, grey, dismal day, really,

0:00:17 > 0:00:19for the last day of May,

0:00:19 > 0:00:22but it was a different story further west,

0:00:22 > 0:00:26and in Glasgow, well, they had the lion's share of both the sunshine

0:00:26 > 0:00:28and the warmth, with temperatures

0:00:28 > 0:00:31peaking at 24 Celsius, 75 Fahrenheit.

0:00:31 > 0:00:33Underneath that cloud and rain - dismal.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35Cambridge only 11 degrees.

0:00:35 > 0:00:39It looks as though we keep the same weather pattern,

0:00:39 > 0:00:41that front splitting the country in two,

0:00:41 > 0:00:43with the best of the weather here.

0:00:43 > 0:00:46Down into the southeast, more cloud,

0:00:46 > 0:00:48with outbreaks of rain from time to time.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50So we will see rain continuing to spill in

0:00:50 > 0:00:52off the North Sea coast,

0:00:52 > 0:00:56drifting its way steadily westwards,

0:00:56 > 0:00:58still accompanied by that northerly breeze.

0:00:58 > 0:01:00That'll make it feel cold,

0:01:00 > 0:01:02particularly on exposed coasts,

0:01:02 > 0:01:04and yet again, west will be best,

0:01:04 > 0:01:06this time the northwest.

0:01:06 > 0:01:08There will be a little more cloud

0:01:08 > 0:01:10into Wales and the southwest.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13We will see outbreaks of rain,

0:01:13 > 0:01:15some of it moderate for a time,

0:01:15 > 0:01:18spilling its way steadily south

0:01:18 > 0:01:19into Thursday morning,

0:01:19 > 0:01:21clearer skies further north again,

0:01:21 > 0:01:24still that nagging northerly breeze,

0:01:24 > 0:01:26with a lot of low cloud and poor visibility

0:01:26 > 0:01:28close to the coast.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31Not too cold a night - 8 to 13 degrees.

0:01:31 > 0:01:33Will the weather story be any different

0:01:33 > 0:01:35on Thursday? Probably not.

0:01:35 > 0:01:37Again, it looks as though

0:01:37 > 0:01:38that wind direction

0:01:38 > 0:01:41still making it feel rather chilly

0:01:41 > 0:01:42on exposed east coasts,

0:01:42 > 0:01:45just a scattering of lighter showers

0:01:45 > 0:01:46likely to the south,

0:01:46 > 0:01:49but again, the best of the sunshine

0:01:49 > 0:01:51the further north and west you are.

0:01:51 > 0:01:53Temperatures again - 18 to 20 degrees

0:01:53 > 0:01:55not out of the question.

0:01:55 > 0:01:59As we move towards Friday and Saturday,

0:01:59 > 0:02:01not that much in the way of change.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04The best of the brightness the further north you are.

0:02:04 > 0:02:08To the south, the cloud maybe thick enough for the odd spot of drizzle

0:02:08 > 0:02:10from time to time.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12But it looks as though we'll start to see

0:02:12 > 0:02:14a change as we move into Sunday.

0:02:14 > 0:02:16This area of low pressure

0:02:16 > 0:02:20could be a player into the early half of next week,

0:02:20 > 0:02:22but the high pressure still with us at the moment,

0:02:22 > 0:02:24and on Sunday the isobars open out.

0:02:24 > 0:02:27That means the winds will become lighter,

0:02:27 > 0:02:29we lose that nagging northerly,

0:02:29 > 0:02:33just dragging in more cloud on the northeast,

0:02:33 > 0:02:35but elsewhere, the cloud should break up,

0:02:35 > 0:02:38with more sunshine and warmth coming through,

0:02:38 > 0:02:42with highs maybe of 22 degrees into the southeast corner.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45So, what's been happening to our weather story recently?

0:02:45 > 0:02:48The jet stream has been very weak

0:02:48 > 0:02:51and, if anything, it's almost doubling back on itself.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54That means if you're taking a long-haul flight

0:02:54 > 0:02:56from the east coast of the US,

0:02:56 > 0:02:59it could be a pretty slow, tedious journey.

0:02:59 > 0:03:01It's not got the jet stream to drive it along.

0:03:01 > 0:03:04That means the weather pattern has been quite stagnant -

0:03:04 > 0:03:06high pressure in the northwest

0:03:06 > 0:03:09driving in this cooler, cloudier weather conditions,

0:03:09 > 0:03:13and also allowing us to be under the influence of this low pressure

0:03:13 > 0:03:16near the Continent, so the southern half of the country

0:03:16 > 0:03:19seeing some rain, but early into next week,

0:03:19 > 0:03:21we could see a change. The high drifts off into Scandinavia,

0:03:21 > 0:03:24more of a mobile westerly returns,

0:03:24 > 0:03:26allowing that low pressure to move in.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29That could drag in a plume of very warm, humid air

0:03:29 > 0:03:32but it also means it could turn thundery. Take care.
