0:00:03 > 0:00:05Hello there. Summer in Britain. Frustrating, isn't it?

0:00:05 > 0:00:09It's the end of June and we're all desperate for some prolonged,

0:00:09 > 0:00:12settled summer sunshine. Just look at Weston-super-Mare

0:00:12 > 0:00:16on Monday - not a cloud in the sky. Beautiful.

0:00:16 > 0:00:17But unfortunately,

0:00:17 > 0:00:20the weather for the week ahead really looks quite changeable.

0:00:20 > 0:00:22Yes, we'll see some sunshine at times,

0:00:22 > 0:00:25but it will eventually turn cool and breezy from Thursday onwards,

0:00:25 > 0:00:27and some of the rain quite heavy.

0:00:27 > 0:00:30Now, the first signs of a change already starting to

0:00:30 > 0:00:33make its impression felt across the southwest.

0:00:33 > 0:00:36It will bring some rain through the early hours of the morning.

0:00:36 > 0:00:39We start off dry and bright in sheltered eastern areas,

0:00:39 > 0:00:40clouding up all the time.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43The rain turning quite heavy into the south-west

0:00:43 > 0:00:44and across parts of Wales.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46Little more showery in nature through Northern Ireland,

0:00:46 > 0:00:50northern England and Scotland, but underneath the cloud,

0:00:50 > 0:00:52the showers or the longer spells of rain, pretty dismal.

0:00:52 > 0:00:55Perhaps staying dry in the south-east corner

0:00:55 > 0:00:58until the afternoon. That's perhaps good news for Wimbledon.

0:00:58 > 0:01:00Underneath the cloud and rain, disappointing.

0:01:00 > 0:01:0414, 15 degrees - highest values maybe of 20 Celsius.

0:01:04 > 0:01:07Now, that rain continues to push its way steadily eastwards

0:01:07 > 0:01:11and then a chilly night to come, Tuesday into Wednesday,

0:01:11 > 0:01:14before we do it all again - almost a repeat performance.

0:01:14 > 0:01:18So, yes, starting off dry and bright with sunshine out to the east.

0:01:18 > 0:01:21The cloud gathers, the rain arrives, the winds strengthen

0:01:21 > 0:01:24and some of that rain quite heavy again across the southwest,

0:01:24 > 0:01:26through Wales, pushing into northern England.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29Showery through Scotland and through Northern Ireland.

0:01:29 > 0:01:33Now, that rain will clear away and then we see a brief ridge of

0:01:33 > 0:01:37high pressure building, so Thursday will actually start off quite quiet.

0:01:37 > 0:01:40Quite a lot of cloud around and the winds will gradually strengthen

0:01:40 > 0:01:43through the day, particularly into the southwest, gusting to

0:01:43 > 0:01:46gale force at the end of the day. And eventually more significant

0:01:46 > 0:01:50rain moves into Northern Ireland and into north-west Scotland.

0:01:50 > 0:01:52Interestingly enough, the winds here will start to swing round

0:01:52 > 0:01:56to a north-westerly direction. That's going to be important.

0:01:56 > 0:02:00That is going to drag down cooler air from the north as we move

0:02:00 > 0:02:02out of Thursday into Friday.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04A noticeably different feel in the weather.

0:02:04 > 0:02:06Perhaps with the exception of the southeast,

0:02:06 > 0:02:09but, unfortunately, as we move towards the real end of June,

0:02:09 > 0:02:12it's going to feel disappointing, particularly if you're caught

0:02:12 > 0:02:15underneath these showers or longer spells of rain for a time.

0:02:15 > 0:02:19Here, the temperatures perhaps low to mid teens at the very best.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21We keep some sunshine down to the south,

0:02:21 > 0:02:23and that's potentially where we'll keep some warmth.

0:02:23 > 0:02:27High teens, maybe up as high as 20 or 21 degrees if we're lucky.

0:02:27 > 0:02:30Further north, 14 to 16 at the very best.

0:02:30 > 0:02:34Now, as we move into the weekend, we still keep this cooler,

0:02:34 > 0:02:36showery regime up into the northwest.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39Still the risk of some showers further south,

0:02:39 > 0:02:43but hopefully not quite as many. 14 to 19 degrees, the high.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45Now, as we approach the second half of the weekend,

0:02:45 > 0:02:47we need to point out two areas of interest.

0:02:47 > 0:02:50One, this area of low pressure running through the Channel, which

0:02:50 > 0:02:52may bring more significant rain to the south,

0:02:52 > 0:02:55but a lot of uncertainty - it's a long way away at the moment.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58And the other, this area of high pressure. The Azores high.

0:02:58 > 0:03:02That's what we need to give us the settled summer sunshine.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05Now, as we move into the six-to-ten-day period, there is

0:03:05 > 0:03:08a potential that the Azores high might just move a little bit

0:03:08 > 0:03:11further into play and push the jet stream - which is driving

0:03:11 > 0:03:15the low pressures in - a little bit further north,

0:03:15 > 0:03:17which means that there is always the potential to stay cooler

0:03:17 > 0:03:21and more showery further north, but if the high-pressure just

0:03:21 > 0:03:25moves into the south, here it will be warmer, almost humid,

0:03:25 > 0:03:28and maybe the risk of a return to some thundery showers.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30A lot to play for. I'll update you tomorrow.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35Good to have you back, sir. I never thought I'd live to see the day.
