0:00:00 > 0:00:04Hello, there. Our weekend just past was one of extremes,

0:00:04 > 0:00:07particularly to the northern half of the UK.

0:00:07 > 0:00:10It was a windy weekend across Scotland.

0:00:10 > 0:00:13In fact, this Weather Watchers picture, sent in thankfully

0:00:13 > 0:00:17from Peter, illustrates the damaging gusts of wind and the effect

0:00:17 > 0:00:21that it had on Mother Nature, with a tree coming down, and in fact,

0:00:21 > 0:00:25in many places, we had the strongest August gusts of wind recorded.

0:00:25 > 0:00:28Perhaps even the strongest gusts of wind for the summer months.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31Cairngorm included in that, with 115mph.

0:00:31 > 0:00:33Despite the strong winds, though,

0:00:33 > 0:00:37it was an incredibly mild start to Sunday morning, with temperatures

0:00:37 > 0:00:41into the mid-teens, so we finished the day in the high teens.

0:00:41 > 0:00:44Heads up, though - through Monday night into Tuesday morning,

0:00:44 > 0:00:48a shock to the system as temperatures fall away in Scotland.

0:00:48 > 0:00:52Close to freezing in some sheltered rural parts. Why?

0:00:52 > 0:00:55Well, it's all due to this area of low pressure that brought the

0:00:55 > 0:00:58stormy weather through the weekend drifting off into the North Sea.

0:00:58 > 0:01:01The wind direction swings round to more of a north-westerly.

0:01:01 > 0:01:04A fresher feel, and that's going to drag in clearer skies,

0:01:04 > 0:01:06cooler nights to come as well.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09But Monday will be a little bit more of a straightforward day.

0:01:09 > 0:01:11Breezy with scattered showers through the day.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14The showers not too heavy, and hopefully quite fleeting,

0:01:14 > 0:01:16and temperatures will recover.

0:01:16 > 0:01:1815-22 Celsius,

0:01:18 > 0:01:20so not as high in the south east as we saw over the weekend,

0:01:20 > 0:01:22but pleasant enough.

0:01:22 > 0:01:25By the time we come through Monday night, clearer skies,

0:01:25 > 0:01:27still that north westerly flow,

0:01:27 > 0:01:30with winds falling light in places and with those clearing skies,

0:01:30 > 0:01:34temperatures fall away in rural spots. We will be down to low

0:01:34 > 0:01:37single figures in sheltered glens of Scotland, but even across the

0:01:37 > 0:01:41north of England and Wales we could see 5-6 Celsius as well.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44Through the middle of the week, high pressure always sitting out

0:01:44 > 0:01:47towards the west, trying to squeeze back in across the country.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50Toppling across the top, we'll see these weather fronts,

0:01:50 > 0:01:53so they are going to introduce on Tuesday some showers up into

0:01:53 > 0:01:56the far north and west, but generally speaking, for England,

0:01:56 > 0:02:00Wales, and for Northern Ireland, it stays predominantly dry and fine.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03Not as warm as it has been, but 14-22 Celsius the high.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06Now, out of Tuesday into Wednesday,

0:02:06 > 0:02:08it may be that the fronts will make a little bit more of an in-road

0:02:08 > 0:02:11across the country, so Wednesday potentially could be the

0:02:11 > 0:02:14wettest day of the week across England and Wales.

0:02:14 > 0:02:16There will be some showery outbreaks of rain.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19Just how much is still up for question,

0:02:19 > 0:02:22but there will be some rain around on Wednesday.

0:02:22 > 0:02:2413-20 Celsius the high here.

0:02:24 > 0:02:28Now, by Thursday, it looks as though those weather fronts will make more

0:02:28 > 0:02:30of an in-road across the northern half of the country and we

0:02:30 > 0:02:34could see the potential for some significant rainfall to the

0:02:34 > 0:02:38extreme north west of Scotland. 40-60mm perhaps.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41So it will be a wet and a rather breezy day up into the north,

0:02:41 > 0:02:44but again the south should stay largely fine and dry,

0:02:44 > 0:02:48and with the wind swinging round to a westerly, not quite as fresh.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51Now, towards the end of the week, the high pressure starts to

0:02:51 > 0:02:55drift back in across the southern half of the country.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58And this could have quite a significant impact as we move

0:02:58 > 0:02:59towards the weekend.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02It does look as though the potential to see a return to

0:03:02 > 0:03:07a south-westerly flow and drive in those warmer rushes - the warmer

0:03:07 > 0:03:09air starts to spill back across the country.

0:03:09 > 0:03:13So it's a long way off, but there is the potential as we move towards the

0:03:13 > 0:03:15weekend and into the early half of next week,

0:03:15 > 0:03:18we could see temperatures mid-, possibly high twenties,

0:03:18 > 0:03:21dare I say, so the early half of next week has the potential for

0:03:21 > 0:03:25being settled for most, with some heat building and rain at times.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28The question mark could be - will we see some thundery downpours

0:03:28 > 0:03:29to go with it?
