0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello. The weekend - it's complicated
0:00:04 > 0:00:06and not just because it's a bank holiday
0:00:06 > 0:00:08in some parts of the UK and not in others.
0:00:08 > 0:00:10No, the weather is going to be complex
0:00:10 > 0:00:12through the long weekend.
0:00:12 > 0:00:14Even before we get there,
0:00:14 > 0:00:16there's going to be fun and games on Thursday
0:00:16 > 0:00:17chasing around thunderstorms,
0:00:17 > 0:00:19the potential after the recent heat
0:00:19 > 0:00:21for these storms to be quite violent,
0:00:21 > 0:00:22possibly causing some issues.
0:00:22 > 0:00:24Maybe some more persistent rain
0:00:24 > 0:00:26developing across northern England and north Wales.
0:00:26 > 0:00:29Scotland and Northern Ireland, another fine day.
0:00:29 > 0:00:30A few showers drifting into the west later on.
0:00:30 > 0:00:33Under that area of rain and close to the east coast,
0:00:33 > 0:00:34it'll be a cool day.
0:00:34 > 0:00:36It'll still be warm and humid across the south-east,
0:00:36 > 0:00:38but not as hot as Wednesday. Still, though,
0:00:38 > 0:00:41the heat and humidity likely to be causing
0:00:41 > 0:00:42further thundery downpours,
0:00:42 > 0:00:44especially across eastern areas,
0:00:44 > 0:00:46for a time on Thursday night before they finally clear,
0:00:46 > 0:00:48taking the mist and low cloud away
0:00:48 > 0:00:50from North Sea coasts, too.
0:00:50 > 0:00:51Still, some warmth and humidity
0:00:51 > 0:00:53in the extreme south-east
0:00:53 > 0:00:55may cause one or two showers on Friday
0:00:55 > 0:00:57and there'll be showers across the far north-west,
0:00:57 > 0:01:00but, for most, well, Friday's a fine day.
0:01:00 > 0:01:01Dry, bright, sunny spells,
0:01:01 > 0:01:03temperatures about average
0:01:03 > 0:01:05and a lot less humid for most of England and Wales.
0:01:05 > 0:01:06That's because of high pressure
0:01:06 > 0:01:08which doesn't hang on for the weekend.
0:01:08 > 0:01:10A low influencing from the south-west,
0:01:10 > 0:01:11another one developing,
0:01:11 > 0:01:14a weather front pushing northwards and intensifying.
0:01:14 > 0:01:15It's a warm front
0:01:15 > 0:01:17so again it's drawing up the warmth,
0:01:17 > 0:01:19the heat from France and Spain,
0:01:19 > 0:01:20the humidity will rise again
0:01:20 > 0:01:23through the weekend and that will spark,
0:01:23 > 0:01:24potentially, quite a heavy band of rain.
0:01:24 > 0:01:26Now, because everything is slow moving,
0:01:26 > 0:01:29there's going to be uncertainty this weekend.
0:01:29 > 0:01:31We are expecting a weather front to develop.
0:01:31 > 0:01:33It could be a little further north or further south,
0:01:33 > 0:01:34but for central areas,
0:01:34 > 0:01:36there could well be some very heavy rain.
0:01:36 > 0:01:37To the north of that,
0:01:37 > 0:01:39something a little drier and brighter.
0:01:39 > 0:01:41Further south, sunny spells and quite warm,
0:01:41 > 0:01:43but there's still the potential for some showers.
0:01:43 > 0:01:45I talked to you about the weekend being complicated.
0:01:45 > 0:01:48Just look at the pressure pattern for Sunday -
0:01:48 > 0:01:49weather fronts, low pressure systems
0:01:49 > 0:01:51all over the place, drifting across the UK.
0:01:51 > 0:01:52Because they're slow moving,
0:01:52 > 0:01:54again it's going to make a big difference
0:01:54 > 0:01:55to the weather.
0:01:55 > 0:01:58That weather front could be grinding to a halt somewhere.
0:01:58 > 0:02:00Again, it could be a little further north or further south.
0:02:00 > 0:02:03Now, rather counter-intuitively,
0:02:03 > 0:02:06we're MORE confident about the weather for Monday.
0:02:06 > 0:02:07As the low pulls away,
0:02:07 > 0:02:09we've got a ridge of high pressure moving in
0:02:09 > 0:02:11so Monday's weather looks half-decent.
0:02:11 > 0:02:13A bank holiday for all except Scotland,
0:02:13 > 0:02:14there will be showers,
0:02:14 > 0:02:15particularly across eastern areas,
0:02:15 > 0:02:17and it will be cooler, a lot fresher once more
0:02:17 > 0:02:20as the warmth from the weekend disappears.
0:02:20 > 0:02:22So, there's uncertainty about the weekend
0:02:22 > 0:02:23and that ties into the jet stream,
0:02:23 > 0:02:25that fast-moving ribbon of air high up,
0:02:25 > 0:02:27and that's because it's in this position,
0:02:27 > 0:02:29this amplified, waving position.
0:02:29 > 0:02:31That's why things are slow-moving,
0:02:31 > 0:02:32that's why there's uncertainty.
0:02:32 > 0:02:34As we go beyond the weekend into next week,
0:02:34 > 0:02:35the jet stream takes on
0:02:35 > 0:02:36a more classic approach,
0:02:36 > 0:02:38drifting its low pressure systems
0:02:38 > 0:02:39across northern Britain
0:02:39 > 0:02:41so that's where we'll see more cloud,
0:02:41 > 0:02:43outbreaks of rain, more changeable weather.
0:02:43 > 0:02:44To the south of the jet stream,
0:02:44 > 0:02:46well, it looks like next week,
0:02:46 > 0:02:47that's where we'll see the best
0:02:47 > 0:02:49of the fine and bright and largely dry weather.
0:02:49 > 0:02:51Beyond the middle of next week,
0:02:51 > 0:02:53things could get even more interesting
0:02:53 > 0:02:56and, for that, we need to look a long way away.
0:02:56 > 0:02:59This area of cloud is Storm Gaston.
0:02:59 > 0:03:01Now, it's a long way from any land,
0:03:01 > 0:03:03it's not expected to directly influence anything,
0:03:03 > 0:03:07but, as we go through the latter part of this week
0:03:07 > 0:03:08and into next week,
0:03:08 > 0:03:10it will be drifting its way northwards.
0:03:10 > 0:03:11It could well be intensifying,
0:03:11 > 0:03:12but that's not the point.
0:03:12 > 0:03:15It's a source of energy pushing northwards
0:03:15 > 0:03:18and it will start to influence our weather patterns
0:03:18 > 0:03:20because it may start to influence our jet stream
0:03:20 > 0:03:22so at the end of next week,
0:03:22 > 0:03:25Gaston could be making things even more complicated.
0:03:25 > 0:03:26We'll be keeping an eye on that
0:03:26 > 0:03:29and of course we'll keep you updated on the weekend. Goodbye.
