0:00:03 > 0:00:06Although we haven't got the official statistics for September 2016,

0:00:06 > 0:00:09you don't need me to stand here and tell you it was a warm month,

0:00:09 > 0:00:13a record-breaking month around the 13th of September.

0:00:13 > 0:00:14We even had some warmth

0:00:14 > 0:00:16towards the end of the month as well.

0:00:16 > 0:00:17Now, at this time of year,

0:00:17 > 0:00:19average temperatures should be

0:00:19 > 0:00:21sitting around mid- to high teens.

0:00:21 > 0:00:24But just take a look at Wednesday's high.

0:00:24 > 0:00:26With a little sunshine, we got some warmth,

0:00:26 > 0:00:2822 degrees in some places,

0:00:28 > 0:00:30peaking at 24 across the Kent coast

0:00:30 > 0:00:32at 75 Fahrenheit.

0:00:32 > 0:00:35A fresher story up into the far north of Scotland

0:00:35 > 0:00:37because of cloud, wind and rain

0:00:37 > 0:00:40and that cooler air will start to descend

0:00:40 > 0:00:41a little bit further south

0:00:41 > 0:00:43as we move towards the weekend

0:00:43 > 0:00:46so that could be a bit of a shock to the system.

0:00:46 > 0:00:48Gales around first thing on Thursday morning,

0:00:48 > 0:00:50severe gales for a time

0:00:50 > 0:00:51in the far north of Scotland

0:00:51 > 0:00:53and although the winds will ease,

0:00:53 > 0:00:54it's going to be a blustery afternoon

0:00:54 > 0:00:57with plenty of squally showers in the north and west.

0:00:57 > 0:00:59The rain easing across the south-east corner,

0:00:59 > 0:01:01brighter skies, but still a blustery afternoon

0:01:01 > 0:01:03and because of the strength of the wind,

0:01:03 > 0:01:05feeling noticeably fresher already,

0:01:05 > 0:01:0812 to 20 degrees the afternoon highs.

0:01:08 > 0:01:10As we move out of Thursday,

0:01:10 > 0:01:13we still keep the isobars across the UK

0:01:13 > 0:01:16which means, basically, it will stay pretty breezy

0:01:16 > 0:01:18through the night and into Friday.

0:01:18 > 0:01:20Friday looks like a typical autumnal day -

0:01:20 > 0:01:22blustery, plenty of showers coming in,

0:01:22 > 0:01:24but also tinged with some sunshine,

0:01:24 > 0:01:28but feeling fresher - 13 to 19 degrees

0:01:28 > 0:01:29so pretty much around average

0:01:29 > 0:01:31for this time of year.

0:01:31 > 0:01:32As we move out of Friday

0:01:32 > 0:01:34into the start of the weekend, though,

0:01:34 > 0:01:37that cool theme set to continue, particularly on Saturday,

0:01:37 > 0:01:40because we could see some showers or longer spells of rain,

0:01:40 > 0:01:43but hopefully Sunday will see an improving picture.

0:01:43 > 0:01:45More in the way of sunshine coming through

0:01:45 > 0:01:46and pleasant enough.

0:01:46 > 0:01:47But the wind's a feature,

0:01:47 > 0:01:49particularly through the Channel coast,

0:01:49 > 0:01:52driving in some showers or longer spells of rain

0:01:52 > 0:01:53and underneath the cloud and rain,

0:01:53 > 0:01:5612 or 13 degrees is going to feel pretty miserable.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58The area of low pressure

0:01:58 > 0:02:00will drift its way steadily eastwards

0:02:00 > 0:02:01through Saturday night into Sunday,

0:02:01 > 0:02:03allowing this little bump in the isobars

0:02:03 > 0:02:07to quieten things down before the next system

0:02:07 > 0:02:10arrives early on into the next week.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12So it does mean that on Sunday morning,

0:02:12 > 0:02:14we could start off on a chilly note

0:02:14 > 0:02:16with a touch of frost in sheltered areas

0:02:16 > 0:02:18so, yes, a chilly start to Sunday,

0:02:18 > 0:02:19but a quieter one,

0:02:19 > 0:02:21dry with some sunshine coming through.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23For most of us,

0:02:23 > 0:02:24it will stay dry throughout the day

0:02:24 > 0:02:27with highs likely around 13 to 18 Celsius,

0:02:27 > 0:02:30but with a little more sunshine,

0:02:30 > 0:02:31it shouldn't feel too bad.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33As we move out of Sunday into Monday,

0:02:33 > 0:02:35here's that next area of low pressure

0:02:35 > 0:02:36arriving from the west,

0:02:36 > 0:02:38bringing yet more wet and windy weather,

0:02:38 > 0:02:40but notice how it just sits up

0:02:40 > 0:02:42into the far north-west of the country.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44The south-east sees a return to southerly winds

0:02:44 > 0:02:47so we could see temperatures a degree or so up.

0:02:47 > 0:02:49So, what's happening in the longer term period?

0:02:49 > 0:02:52The jet stream has been fairly active

0:02:52 > 0:02:53in recent days and when we get

0:02:53 > 0:02:55this fast-moving jet,

0:02:55 > 0:02:56we tend to get a kink in it

0:02:56 > 0:02:59and it tends to then kick the areas of low pressure

0:02:59 > 0:03:01up into the north-west,

0:03:01 > 0:03:02allowing high pressure

0:03:02 > 0:03:04to dominate down into the south-east.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06That's been the story and that looks likely

0:03:06 > 0:03:07to continue to happen

0:03:07 > 0:03:09for the early half of next week,

0:03:09 > 0:03:10but as we move later on

0:03:10 > 0:03:12into the six- to ten-day period,

0:03:12 > 0:03:14it looks potentially as we lose the high

0:03:14 > 0:03:16and there is a possibility

0:03:16 > 0:03:18that the jet stream will weaken slightly

0:03:18 > 0:03:20and then it becomes a little flabbier

0:03:20 > 0:03:22and that means that the low pressures

0:03:22 > 0:03:24will start to drift right across the country

0:03:24 > 0:03:28and it could be a little more unsettled for all of us at times.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30More details coming up tomorrow.
