0:00:02 > 0:00:05A very warm welcome to you and our Weather For The Week Ahead.
0:00:05 > 0:00:08Let's see what Mother Nature's going to bring us in the coming days.
0:00:08 > 0:00:10It's certainly going to be a lot calmer across
0:00:10 > 0:00:14Scotland after that stormy, stormy day on Thursday, particularly
0:00:14 > 0:00:17around north-western coasts of Scotland, gusts around 70mph
0:00:17 > 0:00:19brought in by this area of low pressure,
0:00:19 > 0:00:24the cloud you can see here brought in by this powerful jet stream.
0:00:24 > 0:00:27But things are calming down. Another interesting feature of our weather
0:00:27 > 0:00:29has been the aurora borealis,
0:00:29 > 0:00:33and a good chance of catching a glimpse of this space spectacular
0:00:33 > 0:00:36over the coming nights even as far south as southern
0:00:36 > 0:00:39Britain, but you're going to have to be out of town, out of the
0:00:39 > 0:00:42light pollution, to catch a glimpse of that glow on the horizon.
0:00:42 > 0:00:45Here's the weather for Friday. Not looking bad at all.
0:00:45 > 0:00:46Still a bit of a breeze out there,
0:00:46 > 0:00:49quite fresh across many northern parts of the country.
0:00:49 > 0:00:52You can see 12, 15 degrees, and still a scattering of showers.
0:00:52 > 0:00:54But I think the sunshine will prevail
0:00:54 > 0:00:57at least most of the time on Friday.
0:00:57 > 0:00:59And then, Friday night into Saturday,
0:00:59 > 0:01:01there is yet another change in our weather.
0:01:01 > 0:01:04The jet stream is going to bring us another area of low pressure.
0:01:04 > 0:01:06This time we're not talking about strong winds,
0:01:06 > 0:01:08but we are talking about a very mixed weekend.
0:01:08 > 0:01:11So, the weekend looks something like this,
0:01:11 > 0:01:16a cool and showery Saturday but a much, much better Sunday.
0:01:16 > 0:01:18So, let's have a look at Saturday's weather forecast, then.
0:01:18 > 0:01:20Right from the word go, lots of showers coming in,
0:01:20 > 0:01:24a fair old breeze blowing around, too, but it's the showers
0:01:24 > 0:01:27that really will be the feature of the day, some of them heavy,
0:01:27 > 0:01:30thundery, and wherever the cloud and the showers linger - and this
0:01:30 > 0:01:34could be slow-moving - it will be a cool day, ten, 12, 11,
0:01:34 > 0:01:3613 degrees, those sorts of values.
0:01:36 > 0:01:38In the sunshine, the temperatures will recover to around 17 in London.
0:01:38 > 0:01:42I think the best of the weather will be out north-west here.
0:01:42 > 0:01:45But very quickly as we head into Sunday,
0:01:45 > 0:01:48so Saturday night into Sunday, that low moves out towards the
0:01:48 > 0:01:51Continent and Denmark and we're in-between
0:01:51 > 0:01:53weather systems, so clearing skies.
0:01:53 > 0:01:56But that also means that first thing on Sunday morning,
0:01:56 > 0:01:59it is going to be quite chilly, so widely, I think,
0:01:59 > 0:02:02temperatures will be down to six or seven degrees,
0:02:02 > 0:02:05perhaps cooler than that in some countryside spots.
0:02:05 > 0:02:08So, here's a look at Sunday. Again, in-between weather systems.
0:02:08 > 0:02:11There's that low pressure. Another weather front out in the Atlantic.
0:02:11 > 0:02:15We're in this drier slot. This is a ridge of high pressure.
0:02:15 > 0:02:19Temperatures recovering nicely after a cool morning, 18 in London.
0:02:19 > 0:02:21Still fresh across Scotland.
0:02:21 > 0:02:23That's about the average for the time of year, isn't it?
0:02:23 > 0:02:27We're getting into October now, the end of September, October.
0:02:27 > 0:02:31Here's Monday. Looks like weather fronts are trying to approach,
0:02:31 > 0:02:34but they get stalled, and the reason for that is the shape of the
0:02:34 > 0:02:36jet stream, which I'm going to talk about in just a second.
0:02:36 > 0:02:39But I think it's pretty obvious, lots of fine weather across
0:02:39 > 0:02:42England and Wales here, some outbreaks of rain getting into
0:02:42 > 0:02:44Western Scotland and Northern Ireland.
0:02:44 > 0:02:46And then, come Monday night and Tuesday, that weather front does
0:02:46 > 0:02:49try to move a little bit further towards the east, but it can't.
0:02:49 > 0:02:53It's sort of blocked. The weather pattern's stalled.
0:02:53 > 0:02:56We keep the fine, dry weather across many eastern areas.
0:02:56 > 0:02:59And temperatures not bad in this southerly flow, 20 in London,
0:02:59 > 0:03:0216 or 17 you can see across northern areas of the UK.
0:03:02 > 0:03:04Let's look at the shape of the jet stream,
0:03:04 > 0:03:07because that's quite often what determines our weather.
0:03:07 > 0:03:09When you get this kink and then you get this detour to the north,
0:03:09 > 0:03:11that's where a lot of the weather tends to go.
0:03:11 > 0:03:14All weather fronts kind of stall across this part of the country,
0:03:14 > 0:03:17whereas to the east you have high pressure and fine weather.
0:03:17 > 0:03:21So mainly dry and fine, I think, across eastern areas,
0:03:21 > 0:03:24whereas in the north-west, closer to those weather fronts,
0:03:24 > 0:03:27we will have at times some spells of rain and breezy weather.
0:03:27 > 0:03:29You're up to date. Thanks for watching.
