0:00:03 > 0:00:06Hi, there. Time for a look at the weather over the next week or so.
0:00:06 > 0:00:08Now, normally, our weather comes in from the west, doesn't it?
0:00:08 > 0:00:09Not for the next few days.
0:00:09 > 0:00:12For the next few days, our weather's going to be coming in from the east,
0:00:12 > 0:00:15and the reason for that is a huge, great block in the atmosphere,
0:00:15 > 0:00:18and that's preventing the jet stream from coming in off the Atlantic,
0:00:18 > 0:00:22and driving rain-bearing weather fronts in our direction.
0:00:22 > 0:00:25They're getting fended to the north and to the south of us
0:00:25 > 0:00:27by that block in the atmosphere,
0:00:27 > 0:00:29and a big area of high pressure
0:00:29 > 0:00:31is going to be dominant for several days to come,
0:00:31 > 0:00:32and circulating around that high pressure,
0:00:32 > 0:00:36winds coming in from an easterly direction.
0:00:36 > 0:00:39In fact, that easterly wind will be with us on Tuesday.
0:00:39 > 0:00:42It's a dry wind, which is good news if you want fine weather,
0:00:42 > 0:00:44because, bar the odd isolated shower,
0:00:44 > 0:00:46it should be dry throughout the day.
0:00:46 > 0:00:48Some areas of low cloud around,
0:00:48 > 0:00:50particularly near some eastern coasts,
0:00:50 > 0:00:52but west will be best for sunshine across Scotland.
0:00:52 > 0:00:54This snapshot for four o'clock in the afternoon,
0:00:54 > 0:00:56and most of us will be set fair.
0:00:56 > 0:00:58It'll feel quite pleasant in that October sunshine -
0:00:58 > 0:01:01temperatures up into the mid to high teens,
0:01:01 > 0:01:02though that wind will be quite brisk,
0:01:02 > 0:01:04particularly down towards the south coast,
0:01:04 > 0:01:06so you'll have to get out of that breeze,
0:01:06 > 0:01:09and in the sunshine to benefit, with that warmth.
0:01:09 > 0:01:11So, a fine day to come on Tuesday.
0:01:11 > 0:01:13A fine day for some on Wednesday.
0:01:13 > 0:01:16Subtle differences - bit more cloud in the sky,
0:01:16 > 0:01:20bit more of a breeze, temperatures a bit lower, as well,
0:01:20 > 0:01:21particularly near that east coast,
0:01:21 > 0:01:24where you get exposed to that wind coming off the North Sea.
0:01:24 > 0:01:27The high pressure is still there through the middle part of the week,
0:01:27 > 0:01:29but we're going to start to see increasingly chilly air
0:01:29 > 0:01:30coming down around that high.
0:01:30 > 0:01:33This air originates, actually, in Arctic Russia -
0:01:33 > 0:01:35don't get too worried, it's not going to be THAT cold,
0:01:35 > 0:01:37but a blob of blue, nonetheless,
0:01:37 > 0:01:39wafting its way in our direction,
0:01:39 > 0:01:42so, the message is, through the second half of this week,
0:01:42 > 0:01:44it's going to start to feel quite chilly,
0:01:44 > 0:01:46particularly where you keep a lot of cloud,
0:01:46 > 0:01:49and that's most likely across the more central and eastern areas.
0:01:49 > 0:01:51Thick enough to give, perhaps, the odd shower.
0:01:51 > 0:01:52Still a lot of dry weather,
0:01:52 > 0:01:55western areas probably seeing the best of the sunshine.
0:01:55 > 0:01:56So, to sum up this week, then,
0:01:56 > 0:01:58most of us will stay dry.
0:01:58 > 0:02:00That breeze will be a feature,
0:02:00 > 0:02:03and that breeze will turn increasingly chilly with time.
0:02:03 > 0:02:06It's still there on Friday. Again, a fair bit of cloud,
0:02:06 > 0:02:09and that cloud will produce a few showers scattered around -
0:02:09 > 0:02:11again, I must emphasise that most places will stay dry.
0:02:11 > 0:02:13If you're lucky, you'll see some sunshine,
0:02:13 > 0:02:15but a chill to that wind, for sure.
0:02:15 > 0:02:17Similar story on Saturday, really.
0:02:17 > 0:02:19Difficult to pick out the detail at this range,
0:02:19 > 0:02:21but the main themes are, still that easterly wind,
0:02:21 > 0:02:24still that block to the Atlantic weather system,
0:02:24 > 0:02:26so most places dry, the odd shower.
0:02:26 > 0:02:28What's going to change that?
0:02:28 > 0:02:31Well, obviously, we're keeping a very close eye
0:02:31 > 0:02:32on Hurricane Matthew.
0:02:32 > 0:02:34It's roaring its way up through the Caribbean,
0:02:34 > 0:02:36leaving a trail of destruction, I'm afraid.
0:02:36 > 0:02:38From the likes of Haiti
0:02:38 > 0:02:40it's going to continue to move its way northwards.
0:02:40 > 0:02:42Powerful winds, massive storm surge,
0:02:42 > 0:02:43huge amounts of rain.
0:02:43 > 0:02:44Through the Bahamas, we think,
0:02:44 > 0:02:46and then, later on in the week,
0:02:46 > 0:02:48it'll be parked just to the east
0:02:48 > 0:02:50of the mainland of the USA.
0:02:50 > 0:02:52"So, what?" I hear you say.
0:02:52 > 0:02:53Well, the significance of Matthew
0:02:53 > 0:02:56is that eventually it might start to interact
0:02:56 > 0:02:57with our jet stream.
0:02:57 > 0:03:00Now, at the moment, that jet stream is blocked,
0:03:00 > 0:03:01as I say, as it hits the UK,
0:03:01 > 0:03:03it diverts to the north and the south,
0:03:03 > 0:03:05and, like a stone in the water,
0:03:05 > 0:03:07we've got this huge, great block to the east of us,
0:03:07 > 0:03:10preventing those rain-bearing weather fronts
0:03:10 > 0:03:11from coming in our direction,
0:03:11 > 0:03:14so, high pressure remains in control.
0:03:14 > 0:03:15The big question mark is,
0:03:15 > 0:03:18how will Matthew interact with that jet stream?
0:03:18 > 0:03:19Like flicking a skipping rope,
0:03:19 > 0:03:21it might have some downstream effects,
0:03:21 > 0:03:23which might break that block.
0:03:23 > 0:03:25But, for the time being, it stays chilly, with those brisk winds.
0:03:25 > 0:03:28Always the best of the sunshine across the west, but most of us dry.
0:03:28 > 0:03:30We'll update you again tomorrow.
