0:00:02 > 0:00:03As you're no doubt aware,
0:00:03 > 0:00:06Hurricane Matthew is rampaging through the Caribbean
0:00:06 > 0:00:08with devastating effect, but what influence might it have
0:00:08 > 0:00:10on our weather in the week ahead and how?
0:00:10 > 0:00:12We'll see in a moment.
0:00:12 > 0:00:14Now, it's fine and settled across the UK.
0:00:14 > 0:00:16This is a shot taken by one of our weather watchers
0:00:16 > 0:00:19on Tuesday, the sunshine setting off the autumn colours.
0:00:19 > 0:00:20Why is it so settled?
0:00:20 > 0:00:22A huge area of high pressure plonked over Scandinavia
0:00:22 > 0:00:24and it's keeping these rain-bearing weather fronts
0:00:24 > 0:00:26at bay for the most part.
0:00:26 > 0:00:28Now, the feed of air off the continent
0:00:28 > 0:00:29does contain some cloud,
0:00:29 > 0:00:32but that cloud is thin and liable to break up
0:00:32 > 0:00:34so to all intents and purposes,
0:00:34 > 0:00:36it's going to be a reasonable day with some sunshine.
0:00:36 > 0:00:38In the sunshine, it shouldn't feel too bad,
0:00:38 > 0:00:40but that breeze has something of an edge to it
0:00:40 > 0:00:42and temperatures just a little bit lower
0:00:42 > 0:00:45than they have been so mid-teens, typically,
0:00:45 > 0:00:47not too bad in the sunshine.
0:00:47 > 0:00:49That high pressure remains dominant
0:00:49 > 0:00:50for several days to come.
0:00:50 > 0:00:52What we are going to find, actually,
0:00:52 > 0:00:54from Wednesday into Thursday
0:00:54 > 0:00:55is some chillier air circulating
0:00:55 > 0:00:58around the high and beginning to head in our direction.
0:00:58 > 0:01:00I've put on the colour blue here. Don't get too alarmed,
0:01:00 > 0:01:02it's not going to be frigid air
0:01:02 > 0:01:03by any stretch of the imagination,
0:01:03 > 0:01:05but it is going to turn chillier, I think,
0:01:05 > 0:01:07through Thursday and that breeze really will
0:01:07 > 0:01:08have quite an edge to it
0:01:08 > 0:01:11and the cloud will be a bit thicker as well.
0:01:11 > 0:01:12One or two showers,
0:01:12 > 0:01:13particularly across the more southern
0:01:13 > 0:01:15and eastern parts of the UK,
0:01:15 > 0:01:17but I must stress that most places will stay dry.
0:01:17 > 0:01:18Hopefully, you'll see some sunshine.
0:01:18 > 0:01:21Some of the best of that across the north-western areas
0:01:21 > 0:01:23where you've got some shelter from the breeze,
0:01:23 > 0:01:25but a chilly feel and again on Friday,
0:01:25 > 0:01:27getting the distribution of this cloud will not be easy,
0:01:27 > 0:01:29but generally it's the more eastern areas
0:01:29 > 0:01:31which will see thicker cloud
0:01:31 > 0:01:32and the risk of some showers
0:01:32 > 0:01:34and on into the weekend again,
0:01:34 > 0:01:36western areas with some shelter from that breeze
0:01:36 > 0:01:38probably seeing the best of the sunshine.
0:01:38 > 0:01:40Temperatures, though, struggling
0:01:40 > 0:01:42and where the skies remain clear overnight,
0:01:42 > 0:01:44we could see touches of frost.
0:01:44 > 0:01:46Again on Sunday, a few showers dotted around,
0:01:46 > 0:01:48particularly across some more eastern areas.
0:01:48 > 0:01:50Western areas seeing the best of the sunshine,
0:01:50 > 0:01:52but feeling cool.
0:01:52 > 0:01:55Now, back to that hurricane.
0:01:55 > 0:01:57We've had impacts, of course,
0:01:57 > 0:01:58as it tore through Haiti -
0:01:58 > 0:02:01this just one picture of the devastation which it's caused
0:02:01 > 0:02:03and it's been tracking its way
0:02:03 > 0:02:06northwards through eastern parts of Cuba
0:02:06 > 0:02:08and then it emerges on Wednesday
0:02:08 > 0:02:10out into open water again
0:02:10 > 0:02:12where it could re-intensify
0:02:12 > 0:02:14as it ploughs its way through the Bahamas.
0:02:14 > 0:02:17The question is where does it go next
0:02:17 > 0:02:19and there is an increasing signal
0:02:19 > 0:02:20that it could make landfall
0:02:20 > 0:02:22on the eastern seaboard of the States
0:02:22 > 0:02:23so for the likes of Florida,
0:02:23 > 0:02:25up towards Georgia and the Carolinas,
0:02:25 > 0:02:27an increasing chance
0:02:27 > 0:02:29of major impacts from this hurricane.
0:02:29 > 0:02:30Then it tracks its way northwards,
0:02:30 > 0:02:31no longer a hurricane,
0:02:31 > 0:02:33but a major low pressure system,
0:02:33 > 0:02:34and it could well end up
0:02:34 > 0:02:36as far north as Newfoundland
0:02:36 > 0:02:38or perhaps on into Greenland
0:02:38 > 0:02:40and that could actually build
0:02:40 > 0:02:43this area of high pressure closer to home
0:02:43 > 0:02:45so the stormy weather could actually
0:02:45 > 0:02:47lead to a continuation of the fine weather
0:02:47 > 0:02:49for us with some caveats.
0:02:49 > 0:02:51It does look as if we could see
0:02:51 > 0:02:53some showers developing more widely
0:02:53 > 0:02:55and also some even chillier air
0:02:55 > 0:02:57coming down in the flow from the north-east,
0:02:57 > 0:02:59again not desperately cold,
0:02:59 > 0:03:00it's only October,
0:03:00 > 0:03:02but temperatures really disappointing.
0:03:02 > 0:03:04They go below the normal - green is normal -
0:03:04 > 0:03:06and there's some variation in the signal
0:03:06 > 0:03:07from the computer models,
0:03:07 > 0:03:09but they're all pretty consistent
0:03:09 > 0:03:11that all the way through next week,
0:03:11 > 0:03:13temperatures will remain below normal
0:03:13 > 0:03:15for the time of year.
0:03:15 > 0:03:17So, to sum up,
0:03:17 > 0:03:19next week stays chilly for sure.
0:03:19 > 0:03:21There will be some showers around, we think,
0:03:21 > 0:03:22particularly across some eastern areas.
0:03:22 > 0:03:24It looks like western areas
0:03:24 > 0:03:25with some shelter from that breeze
0:03:25 > 0:03:27will see the best of the dry and bright weather.
0:03:27 > 0:03:29We'll update you again tomorrow.
