0:00:00 > 0:00:02Hi, there. Some interesting developments taking place

0:00:02 > 0:00:04in the atmosphere in the week ahead,

0:00:04 > 0:00:06but I'm pretty confident we won't see anything quite as dramatic

0:00:06 > 0:00:09as we saw exactly 29 years ago,

0:00:09 > 0:00:13when the Great Storm of October 1987

0:00:13 > 0:00:14swept across the country

0:00:14 > 0:00:16with devastating effect,

0:00:16 > 0:00:17and this was the sort of scene

0:00:17 > 0:00:18which some of us woke up to

0:00:18 > 0:00:20across southern parts of the UK

0:00:20 > 0:00:22on the morning of the 16th.

0:00:22 > 0:00:23Nothing that dramatic on the menu.

0:00:23 > 0:00:25We will have a low pressure in close attendance

0:00:25 > 0:00:27over the next couple of days, but it's much flabbier.

0:00:27 > 0:00:28The isobars around it

0:00:28 > 0:00:30aren't so tightly squeezed,

0:00:30 > 0:00:31so the winds won't be as strong,

0:00:31 > 0:00:32though there will be some blustery showers

0:00:32 > 0:00:34circulating around that low pressure system.

0:00:34 > 0:00:36There'll be some variety in our weather -

0:00:36 > 0:00:38wet weather, for example, across the north of Scotland

0:00:38 > 0:00:39on Saturday afternoon.

0:00:39 > 0:00:42Further south, we saw blue skies and sunshine in Lancashire.

0:00:42 > 0:00:43And we'll keep that variety going

0:00:43 > 0:00:45over the next couple of days.

0:00:45 > 0:00:46So, on Sunday,

0:00:46 > 0:00:47one band of showery rain pushes northwards

0:00:47 > 0:00:49through England, Wales and Northern Ireland

0:00:49 > 0:00:51and into the heart of Scotland.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53Followed in turn by those brighter skies again,

0:00:53 > 0:00:54the sun coming out

0:00:54 > 0:00:56for much of England and Wales, actually.

0:00:56 > 0:00:57There will be some showers out west,

0:00:57 > 0:01:00but in the sunshine, very pleasant indeed.

0:01:00 > 0:01:01Temperatures once more up into

0:01:01 > 0:01:02the mid-to-high teens.

0:01:02 > 0:01:03But where it's wet - for example,

0:01:03 > 0:01:05across the heart of Highlands Scotland -

0:01:05 > 0:01:07it won't feel all that warm.

0:01:07 > 0:01:08That low pressure's still there,

0:01:08 > 0:01:09it's anchored to the north-west.

0:01:09 > 0:01:11And it's areas closest to that low,

0:01:11 > 0:01:12as we get on into Monday,

0:01:12 > 0:01:14which will see most of the showers,

0:01:14 > 0:01:15particularly for Northern Ireland

0:01:15 > 0:01:16and Scotland.

0:01:16 > 0:01:17By and large,

0:01:17 > 0:01:19the further south and east we are,

0:01:19 > 0:01:21there'll be fewer showers, lighter winds,

0:01:21 > 0:01:22there'll be more sunshine

0:01:22 > 0:01:24and it'll feel quite warm again.

0:01:24 > 0:01:25Temperatures once more

0:01:25 > 0:01:27into the mid-to-high teens across

0:01:27 > 0:01:28these more southern and eastern parts

0:01:28 > 0:01:29of the UK.

0:01:29 > 0:01:31Further north and west, though,

0:01:31 > 0:01:32with more showers around,

0:01:32 > 0:01:33it will be cooler here,

0:01:33 > 0:01:35with 12 or 13 more typical

0:01:35 > 0:01:37for Northern Ireland and Scotland.

0:01:37 > 0:01:40Now, as we head towards Tuesday and Wednesday,

0:01:40 > 0:01:42that low pressure system is going to

0:01:42 > 0:01:44sort of waddle its way across the country,

0:01:44 > 0:01:46bringing some fairly heavy bursts of rain

0:01:46 > 0:01:47down with it.

0:01:47 > 0:01:48And in the wake of that,

0:01:48 > 0:01:50still some cloud and showers on Tuesday

0:01:50 > 0:01:52and we're going to start to draw in some cooler

0:01:52 > 0:01:53northerly winds,

0:01:53 > 0:01:54so temperatures really struggling,

0:01:54 > 0:01:57just, what, 11-13 degrees typically

0:01:57 > 0:01:58and that cooling trend

0:01:58 > 0:01:59a sign of things to come.

0:01:59 > 0:02:00Now, Hurricane Nicole,

0:02:00 > 0:02:02it's been around for a week or so now.

0:02:02 > 0:02:02It's still stuck out there

0:02:02 > 0:02:04in the middle of the Atlantic.

0:02:04 > 0:02:05It could well play a part

0:02:05 > 0:02:07in our weather later on this week.

0:02:07 > 0:02:08No longer a hurricane,

0:02:08 > 0:02:10but it'll surge a lot of energy northwards

0:02:10 > 0:02:12and the downstream effect of that

0:02:12 > 0:02:15will be to build this area of high pressure.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17From midweek on, really,

0:02:17 > 0:02:19that's set to dominate our weather.

0:02:19 > 0:02:20So that means the weather's

0:02:20 > 0:02:21actually going to settle down

0:02:21 > 0:02:23by virtue of Nicole.

0:02:23 > 0:02:24Still some showers across eastern England

0:02:24 > 0:02:26on that cool northerly breeze.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28The best of the dry and bright weather

0:02:28 > 0:02:29further north and west,

0:02:29 > 0:02:31but, again, it's quite a cool air stream,

0:02:31 > 0:02:33so temperatures not all that great.

0:02:33 > 0:02:34And similarly on Thursday,

0:02:34 > 0:02:36that cool breeze bringing more showers

0:02:36 > 0:02:38to East Anglia and the south-east.

0:02:38 > 0:02:40By and large, the further north and west we are,

0:02:40 > 0:02:42it'll be drier, it'll be quieter,

0:02:42 > 0:02:44with some sunshine by day.

0:02:44 > 0:02:45But with clear skies overnight,

0:02:45 > 0:02:47temperatures will be falling away.

0:02:47 > 0:02:48Some chilly nights to come this week.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50Could see some frost around

0:02:50 > 0:02:51across the north and west

0:02:51 > 0:02:53and some lingering fog patches as well.

0:02:53 > 0:02:56Now, the atmosphere is very blocked -

0:02:56 > 0:02:57it has been for much of October.

0:02:57 > 0:02:59Normally, we have quite a strong,

0:02:59 > 0:03:00westerly jet stream,

0:03:00 > 0:03:03but just look how contorted it is

0:03:03 > 0:03:04and it's going to remain so

0:03:04 > 0:03:05for some time to come,

0:03:05 > 0:03:06and that's going to prevent

0:03:06 > 0:03:08those weather systems really making

0:03:08 > 0:03:10much of an inroad in off the Atlantic.

0:03:10 > 0:03:12Those northerly or easterly winds

0:03:12 > 0:03:13will continue to dominate.

0:03:13 > 0:03:15That means mostly dry weather

0:03:15 > 0:03:16next weekend.

0:03:16 > 0:03:17Quite chilly, though,

0:03:17 > 0:03:19particularly as the winds pick up.

0:03:19 > 0:03:21Could well be that eventually rain

0:03:21 > 0:03:22will start to push in from the west

0:03:22 > 0:03:24as those fronts liven up,

0:03:24 > 0:03:25but watch this space.

0:03:25 > 0:03:27I will update you again this time tomorrow.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32Do I know these people?

0:03:32 > 0:03:34Does anyone really know anyone?
