0:00:02 > 0:00:03Yesterday, I was pointing out

0:00:03 > 0:00:06how peculiar this October is turning out to be meteorologically,

0:00:06 > 0:00:10dominated by easterly winds where normally westerlies rule the roost.

0:00:10 > 0:00:13Now, temporarily, the westerlies are in charge, and they're

0:00:13 > 0:00:17pushing this cold front across the country, a band of showery rain.

0:00:17 > 0:00:20Behind that, sunnier skies but also lower temperatures, and along this

0:00:20 > 0:00:23little frontal band we've got some fairly frequent and heavy showers.

0:00:23 > 0:00:25And it's cold enough for a bit of the white stuff,

0:00:25 > 0:00:28up over the tops of the Scottish mountains,

0:00:28 > 0:00:30and a chilly and blustery wind not helping the feel of things.

0:00:30 > 0:00:34Ten to 12 degrees in the afternoon for Scotland and Northern Ireland.

0:00:34 > 0:00:37A little line of showers pushing into north-west England,

0:00:37 > 0:00:39as well, so for the Manchester area, for example,

0:00:39 > 0:00:41not feeling very pleasant, with frequent showers.

0:00:41 > 0:00:44The odd shower further south, towards the west coast of Wales,

0:00:44 > 0:00:46maybe the far south-west, but a lot of sunshine

0:00:46 > 0:00:49after the early showery rain has cleared from the south-east.

0:00:49 > 0:00:52But temperatures actually several degrees lower than they have

0:00:52 > 0:00:55been recently. Now, we're going to go out into the Atlantic.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57I pointed out Nicole yesterday.

0:00:57 > 0:01:01It's been spinning around for a couple of weeks now - a hurricane.

0:01:01 > 0:01:03It won't be a hurricane over the next few days,

0:01:03 > 0:01:05but it will influence our weather indirectly.

0:01:05 > 0:01:09As it surges northwards, it carries a lot of energy and helps to build

0:01:09 > 0:01:12this downstream ridge closer to home,

0:01:12 > 0:01:14that ridge of high pressure benefitting the more western

0:01:14 > 0:01:18parts of the UK, where the weather will settle down, whereas closest to

0:01:18 > 0:01:20the east coast we've got that area of low pressure,

0:01:20 > 0:01:22and that'll keep the showers going here.

0:01:22 > 0:01:25So a bit of a west/east split, actually, through Wednesday.

0:01:25 > 0:01:28West is best for sunshine underneath that area of high pressure,

0:01:28 > 0:01:31just the odd shower here, plenty of sunshine and lighter winds.

0:01:31 > 0:01:34Further east, the blustery wind and further showers,

0:01:34 > 0:01:36particularly near that east coast, keeping it cool,

0:01:36 > 0:01:39just 12 degrees in Norwich, but everywhere, actually,

0:01:39 > 0:01:43temperatures will be lower than they have been over the last few days.

0:01:43 > 0:01:45Now, overnight, under clear skies out west,

0:01:45 > 0:01:49that does mean from midweek onwards, really, as the map turns blue,

0:01:49 > 0:01:53we're expecting some frost and some fog around as well first

0:01:53 > 0:01:56thing in the morning, so be aware of that.

0:01:56 > 0:01:59Further east, with that cloud and that breeze,

0:01:59 > 0:02:02we will avoid most of the fog and the frost, but we'll continue with

0:02:02 > 0:02:06that showery theme, particularly towards the eastern coastal areas.

0:02:06 > 0:02:10And that's really the way we end the week, with that east/west split and

0:02:10 > 0:02:13some of those showers drifting into the east coast of Scotland, perhaps.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16Western areas again, after early fog and frost,

0:02:16 > 0:02:18seeing the best of the sunshine, but wherever you are,

0:02:18 > 0:02:20temperatures will not be spectacularly high.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23Those easterlies are back in charge.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26Normally, the jet stream meanders out of America and across the

0:02:26 > 0:02:28Atlantic like this,

0:02:28 > 0:02:31and it generates weather systems which push in from the west,

0:02:31 > 0:02:33carrying bands of rain, but at the moment,

0:02:33 > 0:02:36it looks like that jet stream is going to split again,

0:02:36 > 0:02:39as it has done so frequently through this October, and that's

0:02:39 > 0:02:43barring these rain-bearing weather systems coming in off the Atlantic.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46Instead, they're being fended off by the easterly winds through

0:02:46 > 0:02:49next weekend, and those easterlies look like being in charge

0:02:49 > 0:02:50for some considerable time.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53There's a question mark about whether fronts will get into

0:02:53 > 0:02:56the far south-west, carrying milder air.

0:02:56 > 0:02:58It does look as if those easterlies will continue to bring chilly

0:02:58 > 0:03:00air in from the Continent.

0:03:00 > 0:03:04But we're only in late October, so the easterlies are not that cold.

0:03:04 > 0:03:08If we fast-forward to late November, it would be a very different matter.

0:03:08 > 0:03:13We would be in for a particularly cold spell, with the threat of snow.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16But we're not, so that's good news if you don't like cold weather.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19Into early next week, that jet stream looks like staying blocked.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22We keep those chilly easterly winds, though not too cold, hopefully,

0:03:22 > 0:03:26and that threat of rain, albeit temporarily, in the far south-west.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28That's it. We'll update you again tomorrow.
