0:00:02 > 0:00:03We've been forecasting some rough weather

0:00:03 > 0:00:05and it's already arrived.

0:00:05 > 0:00:08Not too stormy just yet - we've got rain and wind -

0:00:08 > 0:00:11but come Friday, that's when the weather

0:00:11 > 0:00:13could turn very nasty, particularly across

0:00:13 > 0:00:15northern parts of the British Isles,

0:00:15 > 0:00:16and there could be some disruption.

0:00:16 > 0:00:19Really worth paying attention to the weather forecast

0:00:19 > 0:00:22over the next 48 hours, because it may affect

0:00:22 > 0:00:24your travel plans around Christmas.

0:00:24 > 0:00:26This is what the satellite picture looks like -

0:00:26 > 0:00:29those clouds are racing across the Atlantic.

0:00:29 > 0:00:31They're being pushed by a powerful jet stream.

0:00:31 > 0:00:33Here's the leading edge of that bad weather.

0:00:33 > 0:00:34It's been moving across

0:00:34 > 0:00:36north-western parts of the British Isles

0:00:36 > 0:00:37during the course of Tuesday.

0:00:37 > 0:00:39Shocking day in Northern Ireland,

0:00:39 > 0:00:40heavy rain, feeling cold.

0:00:40 > 0:00:42Then, through early Wednesday,

0:00:42 > 0:00:43some of that rain,

0:00:43 > 0:00:45the leftover of this weather front,

0:00:45 > 0:00:47moving a little bit further south.

0:00:47 > 0:00:49Now, behind this line of rain,

0:00:49 > 0:00:50we've got colder air

0:00:50 > 0:00:52coming in off the Atlantic

0:00:52 > 0:00:54and that means that any showers

0:00:54 > 0:00:56pushed in by that strong wind,

0:00:56 > 0:00:58when they come through, some of these showers could be wintry,

0:00:58 > 0:01:00particularly across the hills.

0:01:00 > 0:01:02We could have some hail and thunder crossing

0:01:02 > 0:01:04parts of northern England into Wales,

0:01:04 > 0:01:06but notice also,

0:01:06 > 0:01:07across the south and the south-east,

0:01:07 > 0:01:09it turns cloudier and wetter.

0:01:09 > 0:01:11As the day goes on, we'll get a couple

0:01:11 > 0:01:13of double-figure temperatures

0:01:13 > 0:01:14for a time in the south,

0:01:14 > 0:01:16but in the north, a lot colder -

0:01:16 > 0:01:18we can see 5 degrees there in Glasgow -

0:01:18 > 0:01:20and that wind will just

0:01:20 > 0:01:21keep on building and building

0:01:21 > 0:01:23as we go over the next few days.

0:01:23 > 0:01:25So, Wednesday night, a blustery day

0:01:25 > 0:01:27with showers across the north,

0:01:27 > 0:01:28clearer in the south.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31Actually, Thursday starts off on a sunny note

0:01:31 > 0:01:32for many of us,

0:01:32 > 0:01:33at least across much of England.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36Wales will get a few showers, but here,

0:01:36 > 0:01:37I think the best day of the week,

0:01:37 > 0:01:39southern England south-eastern England,

0:01:39 > 0:01:42East Anglia, some of these Eastern counties.

0:01:42 > 0:01:44Scotland and Northern Ireland get the showers

0:01:44 > 0:01:46and it will remain very windy

0:01:46 > 0:01:48and very chilly in that wind as well.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50And then Friday -

0:01:50 > 0:01:52that's when it really starts to kick in.

0:01:52 > 0:01:54This big area of low pressure comes in.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56This has been named Storm Barbara

0:01:56 > 0:01:59by the Met Office, and we have an amber warning

0:01:59 > 0:02:00issued by the Met Office

0:02:00 > 0:02:02for north-western parts of Scotland,

0:02:02 > 0:02:06and other warnings are issued further south too.

0:02:06 > 0:02:07Now, the top gusts -

0:02:07 > 0:02:08Friday could approach 90mph

0:02:08 > 0:02:10in north-western Scotland,

0:02:10 > 0:02:1370mph through Northern Ireland,

0:02:13 > 0:02:15southern Scotland and northern England.

0:02:15 > 0:02:16Not so bad in the south,

0:02:16 > 0:02:18but there could be another storm on the way.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20Whether this one will be named or not,

0:02:20 > 0:02:22too early to say - we have to determine

0:02:22 > 0:02:24just how powerful or how many impacts

0:02:24 > 0:02:26it may potentially bring.

0:02:26 > 0:02:27But Christmas Eve, again,

0:02:27 > 0:02:29very blustery, then Christmas Day...

0:02:29 > 0:02:31So, this isn't Barbara,

0:02:31 > 0:02:33this is the next one, the second storm -

0:02:33 > 0:02:34I mean, look at all these arrows.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36Really strong winds blowing through,

0:02:36 > 0:02:38gales in the north,

0:02:38 > 0:02:40very blustery in the south as well,

0:02:40 > 0:02:43And once the second storm moves through,

0:02:43 > 0:02:46Christmas Day, later on Christmas Day,

0:02:46 > 0:02:48we could see colder air coming in temporarily.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51There could be some wintry weather

0:02:51 > 0:02:52across northern hills,

0:02:52 > 0:02:55and then, after all of that,

0:02:55 > 0:02:57it calms down.

0:02:57 > 0:02:59High pressure builds across

0:02:59 > 0:03:01many parts of southern Britain,

0:03:01 > 0:03:02maybe as far north

0:03:02 > 0:03:04as northern parts of Britain,

0:03:04 > 0:03:05but there is just a small print

0:03:05 > 0:03:07to the weather forecast,

0:03:07 > 0:03:09because there will be some nasty lows,

0:03:09 > 0:03:11lurking and developing out in the Atlantic,

0:03:11 > 0:03:13and they may affect

0:03:13 > 0:03:15north-western parts of the UK.

0:03:15 > 0:03:16But say high pressure does build -

0:03:16 > 0:03:18and we're fairly confident of that -

0:03:18 > 0:03:19that will probably push

0:03:19 > 0:03:21some milder air in our direction,

0:03:21 > 0:03:23but cold air will never be too far away.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26That's a long way off, a long way off.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28We have a rough ride before that happens.
