0:00:02 > 0:00:05Hello. The weather in the run-up to Christmas and after Christmas
0:00:05 > 0:00:07is going to be like Jekyll and Hyde.
0:00:07 > 0:00:11For the next few days, some really bad weather across northern parts
0:00:11 > 0:00:12of the UK, in particular.
0:00:12 > 0:00:15We'll see spells of rain interspersed with showers,
0:00:15 > 0:00:18they could be wintry over the hills, but it will be very windy.
0:00:18 > 0:00:20Why so windy?
0:00:20 > 0:00:23We look to the other side of the Atlantic
0:00:23 > 0:00:25and the temperature contrast here
0:00:25 > 0:00:27has strengthened the jet
0:00:27 > 0:00:29and that really fast-moving strong jet
0:00:29 > 0:00:31moves across the Atlantic
0:00:31 > 0:00:34and picks up areas of low pressure, deepens them
0:00:34 > 0:00:36and steers them to the northwest of the UK,
0:00:36 > 0:00:38where the jet stream is stronger.
0:00:38 > 0:00:41We've got strong winds at the moment,
0:00:41 > 0:00:43gales and frequent wintry showers,
0:00:43 > 0:00:45some pretty nasty weather.
0:00:45 > 0:00:47Showers coming into Northern Ireland,
0:00:47 > 0:00:49rain clears from the southeast,
0:00:49 > 0:00:51then we get patchy fog,
0:00:51 > 0:00:53and it will turn quite chilly.
0:00:53 > 0:00:55There could be some icy conditions,
0:00:55 > 0:00:57especially high-level routes,
0:00:57 > 0:01:00in Scotland. There'll be more wintry showers
0:01:00 > 0:01:02here on Thursday. Quite a few showers
0:01:02 > 0:01:04coming into other western areas
0:01:04 > 0:01:07for a while, but for many eastern parts
0:01:07 > 0:01:08it'll be dry and sunny,
0:01:08 > 0:01:10once we clear that fog and mist.
0:01:10 > 0:01:13More atrocious weather for the Scottish mountains.
0:01:13 > 0:01:15It's easy to forget this,
0:01:15 > 0:01:18given that we're all in for windy weather.
0:01:18 > 0:01:21A lot of snow to come over the Scottish mountains.
0:01:21 > 0:01:24Could get snow over the hills in Northern Ireland.
0:01:24 > 0:01:26There'll be some showers
0:01:26 > 0:01:28in northwest England, Wales and the southwest.
0:01:28 > 0:01:30For much of the day,
0:01:30 > 0:01:32the Midlands and eastern England
0:01:32 > 0:01:35will be dry and sunny but feel a bit chillier.
0:01:35 > 0:01:37Then the winds really start to pick up,
0:01:37 > 0:01:39our second named storm of the season,
0:01:39 > 0:01:42Barbara, taking a tract to the northwest of Scotland.
0:01:42 > 0:01:45These fronts will bring a spell of rain,
0:01:45 > 0:01:48but it's the strength of the wind
0:01:48 > 0:01:49that's the major concern.
0:01:49 > 0:01:53We still have this amber wind warning from the Met Office,
0:01:53 > 0:01:56the winds picking up throughout Friday
0:01:56 > 0:01:58and into Friday night.
0:01:58 > 0:02:01The strongest winds across the northwest of Scotland,
0:02:01 > 0:02:04gusts of 80, 90mph. Elsewhere in Scotland,
0:02:04 > 0:02:06Northern Ireland, northern England,
0:02:06 > 0:02:09perhaps North Wales, gusts of 60 or 70,
0:02:09 > 0:02:12and the strongest of the winds later in the day,
0:02:12 > 0:02:14probably into the evening period,
0:02:14 > 0:02:17as Barbara, that deep area of low pressure,
0:02:17 > 0:02:18then tends to pull away.
0:02:18 > 0:02:20Things calm down slowly
0:02:20 > 0:02:23as we head into Christmas Eve morning.
0:02:23 > 0:02:24It won't be as windy,
0:02:24 > 0:02:26there'll still be blustery showers,
0:02:26 > 0:02:29maybe a bit of snow over the hills.
0:02:29 > 0:02:31Further south, not as windy.
0:02:31 > 0:02:32Drier, brighter,
0:02:32 > 0:02:34increasing amounts of cloud, mind you,
0:02:34 > 0:02:37and that sets us up for Christmas Day.
0:02:37 > 0:02:39It's going to be very mild.
0:02:39 > 0:02:41If we get temperatures of 15, 16,
0:02:41 > 0:02:42it could be a
0:02:42 > 0:02:45record-breaking mild Christmas Day.
0:02:45 > 0:02:47It's not going to come without some rain,
0:02:47 > 0:02:50this front taking rain down from the northwest,
0:02:50 > 0:02:53and add to that, the winds are mild
0:02:53 > 0:02:55but they're also going to be very strong and gusty,
0:02:55 > 0:02:58especially close to that area of low pressure,
0:02:58 > 0:03:01this one not as intense as Barbara, perhaps.
0:03:01 > 0:03:03After Christmas, all change.
0:03:03 > 0:03:05High pressure starts to build up
0:03:05 > 0:03:07from the southwest on Boxing Day
0:03:07 > 0:03:09and the days after that,
0:03:09 > 0:03:11some stronger winds in the northwest
0:03:11 > 0:03:13for a while, but things really
0:03:13 > 0:03:16settling down. It could be cold,
0:03:16 > 0:03:17it could be clear, frosty
0:03:17 > 0:03:19and then probably cloud amounts
0:03:19 > 0:03:21increasing within that area
0:03:21 > 0:03:22of high pressure.
0:03:22 > 0:03:24Uncertainty about the cloud amounts
0:03:24 > 0:03:27but we will see a significant change
0:03:27 > 0:03:29in the weather pattern. Goodbye.
