0:00:01 > 0:00:05Hello. Either side of Christmas, we have chalk and cheese weather.

0:00:05 > 0:00:07Right up to Christmas, some very stormy conditions,

0:00:07 > 0:00:10all because we have a very strong jet stream

0:00:10 > 0:00:13that's whistling across the Atlantic,

0:00:13 > 0:00:16and initially picking up this area of cloud here.

0:00:16 > 0:00:19This is our second named storm of the season,

0:00:19 > 0:00:20Storm Barbara.

0:00:20 > 0:00:22It's tracking towards our shores

0:00:22 > 0:00:24on that very strong jet stream.

0:00:24 > 0:00:26Ahead of it, we've had some poor weather

0:00:26 > 0:00:28already across Scotland, some more snow.

0:00:28 > 0:00:29But the showers here are becoming fewer

0:00:29 > 0:00:30and less wintry.

0:00:30 > 0:00:32England and Wales - largely clear skies,

0:00:32 > 0:00:34one or two mist and fog patches, perhaps.

0:00:34 > 0:00:36Out towards the west, the wind will pick up,

0:00:36 > 0:00:37picking up the temperatures

0:00:37 > 0:00:39and blowing in more cloud.

0:00:39 > 0:00:41And some rain in the north-west -

0:00:41 > 0:00:43the first sign of that storm

0:00:43 > 0:00:45that's heading our way.

0:00:45 > 0:00:46So it's a deep area of low pressure,

0:00:46 > 0:00:47Storm Barbara,

0:00:47 > 0:00:49and it's going to track the centre,

0:00:49 > 0:00:51just to the north of Scotland.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53There'll be some strong winds everywhere.

0:00:53 > 0:00:54On that weather front,

0:00:54 > 0:00:55there'll be some heavy rain.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57Very quickly, it turns very windy

0:00:57 > 0:00:58and very wet in the morning

0:00:58 > 0:01:00across Scotland and Northern Ireland.

0:01:00 > 0:01:02Some pretty awful weather in the morning.

0:01:02 > 0:01:03That heavy rain and squally winds

0:01:03 > 0:01:06drives into western parts of England and Wales

0:01:06 > 0:01:07in the afternoon.

0:01:07 > 0:01:09East Anglia, the south-east largely dry,

0:01:09 > 0:01:10but still windy.

0:01:10 > 0:01:12We're going to find some heavy showers

0:01:12 > 0:01:15rattling into Scotland and Northern Ireland

0:01:15 > 0:01:17later on in the afternoon, after the rain.

0:01:17 > 0:01:19It's later in the afternoon, into the evening,

0:01:19 > 0:01:21that the winds really ramp up a notch or two

0:01:21 > 0:01:23in the north of Scotland.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26Gusts of 80 or possibly 90mph.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29It's because of that that we have this amber -

0:01:29 > 0:01:31be prepared - wind warning

0:01:31 > 0:01:32from the Met Office.

0:01:32 > 0:01:35There may be some travel disruption, there may be some damage as well.

0:01:35 > 0:01:37It's nothing out of the ordinary, though,

0:01:37 > 0:01:38for this time of the year.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40But, nevertheless, Storm Barbara moves away

0:01:40 > 0:01:42during Friday night.

0:01:42 > 0:01:44Still very windy across some northern areas

0:01:44 > 0:01:45into Saturday.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48Saturday, of course, is Christmas Eve.

0:01:48 > 0:01:49By the morning, it won't be as windy,

0:01:49 > 0:01:51but we'll still have some blustery showers,

0:01:51 > 0:01:53some snow over the Scottish hills again.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55Bright and breezy further south.

0:01:55 > 0:01:56Cloud amounts will increase,

0:01:56 > 0:01:59and we'll see some rain arriving in the north-west.

0:01:59 > 0:02:01That's on that weather front there.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03They're all driven by the next area

0:02:03 > 0:02:05of low pressure picked up by the jet stream,

0:02:05 > 0:02:07this one not as deep, the winds not as strong.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10However, it will be a very windy day on Christmas Day.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13We're drawing in some very mild air as well,

0:02:13 > 0:02:16the temperatures could be into the mid-teens.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19Tempered by those really strong and gusty winds,

0:02:19 > 0:02:21and there will be some rain driving southwards,

0:02:21 > 0:02:23away from Scotland and Northern Ireland,

0:02:23 > 0:02:25into England and Wales. As that clears away,

0:02:25 > 0:02:27some colder air arrives in the north-west.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29It could eventually turn into a white Christmas,

0:02:29 > 0:02:31maybe, in Scotland.

0:02:31 > 0:02:32By the time we get to Boxing Day,

0:02:32 > 0:02:34temperatures will be significantly lower.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36It will feel quite a lot colder

0:02:36 > 0:02:37across northern areas

0:02:37 > 0:02:40where it's still windy on Boxing Day.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42There's going to be some wintry showers around too,

0:02:42 > 0:02:44but for the south, across the UK,

0:02:44 > 0:02:47close to this developing area of high pressure,

0:02:47 > 0:02:48the winds will be lighter

0:02:48 > 0:02:50and there should be quite a bit of sunshine around.

0:02:50 > 0:02:54So things look very different in the run-up to New Year.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56We're going to find some frosty weather returning

0:02:56 > 0:02:59with some clearer skies, maybe some patches of fog.

0:02:59 > 0:03:01That may eventually lift into low cloud.

0:03:01 > 0:03:03As we head closer to the New Year,

0:03:03 > 0:03:07there will be a tendency to increase cloud amounts

0:03:07 > 0:03:10all the while, and lose a lot of the sunshine.

0:03:10 > 0:03:12Why is this happening? High pressure.

0:03:12 > 0:03:14High pressure is building in across the UK.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17The centre slips away towards the near continent.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20That will allow more of a southerly wind to develop.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23That will draw up some milder air, some windier conditions,

0:03:23 > 0:03:25but most places still dry,

0:03:25 > 0:03:26albeit increasingly cloudy.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28That's it from me. Goodbye.
