0:00:02 > 0:00:03Thanks for joining me.

0:00:03 > 0:00:07As forecast, Christmas Day was exceptionally mild across the UK.

0:00:07 > 0:00:10I don't think we beat any records, we are still checking on that.

0:00:10 > 0:00:12But it was close.

0:00:12 > 0:00:15Temperatures around 100 years ago were 15.6 degrees.

0:00:15 > 0:00:19Today we recorded in Scotland around 15.1.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22There still might be one or two other stations that need

0:00:22 > 0:00:24checking to confirm that that indeed was the highest.

0:00:24 > 0:00:27But it is a selection of some of the temperatures we had today.

0:00:27 > 0:00:31Hereford at 14, Hull at 14, London at around 13 degrees.

0:00:31 > 0:00:33Now, there is a change heading our way.

0:00:33 > 0:00:36This line of rain here, which will be crossing southern parts of

0:00:36 > 0:00:38the UK, is actually a cold front.

0:00:38 > 0:00:42Behind it, we have some showers and cold air coming in now.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45A day too late for some of us.

0:00:45 > 0:00:48Look at that, wintry showers across parts of Scotland.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50This is still driven by Storm Conor

0:00:50 > 0:00:53which will be passing way to the north of us.

0:00:53 > 0:00:56But because it is such a large weather system,

0:00:56 > 0:01:00it is still sending fierce winds into northern parts of Scotland.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03So, on Boxing Day, there is an amber warning in force

0:01:03 > 0:01:04for northern parts of Scotland.

0:01:04 > 0:01:06Storm force winds there,

0:01:06 > 0:01:09whereas in the south, a completely different story.

0:01:09 > 0:01:10Look at that,

0:01:10 > 0:01:13a lovely Boxing Day across most of England and Wales as well.

0:01:13 > 0:01:15Lots of events taking place this day,

0:01:15 > 0:01:17so the weather is certainly turning perfect for that.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20Not so bad in Northern Ireland, but a bit breezy, maybe one or

0:01:20 > 0:01:23two showers and windy weather there across the Northern Pennines.

0:01:23 > 0:01:25And then into Scotland, very strong winds, gales around these coasts

0:01:25 > 0:01:30and the storm force winds, at least for a time, for Orkney and Shetland.

0:01:30 > 0:01:34So, the southern two-thirds of the country on Boxing Day

0:01:34 > 0:01:36enjoying a fine day.

0:01:36 > 0:01:40In the north, lots of showers and some very, very windy weather.

0:01:40 > 0:01:43Now, we're going to keep the sunny skies but we are also going

0:01:43 > 0:01:44to get some fog in the coming days.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47The reason is that rather than low pressure,

0:01:47 > 0:01:50high pressure starts to build across the UK.

0:01:50 > 0:01:51This is Tuesday morning.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54See some hues of blue here, so there will be a frost around,

0:01:54 > 0:01:57a crisp start to the day.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00A little bit more breeze in the north, so frost-free here.

0:02:00 > 0:02:05But for England and Wales, after a foggy start, sunshine -

0:02:05 > 0:02:06and cooler by day.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09Temperatures only around six or seven degrees.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12And this high pressure will stick around for a while.

0:02:12 > 0:02:15And in the winter time, when the high pressure locks in,

0:02:15 > 0:02:20stalls across one part of the continent, Europe, the UK,

0:02:20 > 0:02:22we tend to get problems with fog

0:02:22 > 0:02:25and where the fog lingers through the day, temperatures struggle.

0:02:25 > 0:02:26Here is an example.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28If the fog lingers, it could be only three degrees during the daytime.

0:02:28 > 0:02:33So if you are travelling between Christmas and the New Year,

0:02:33 > 0:02:35be prepared that it could be tricky,

0:02:35 > 0:02:38especially in the morning on some country roads,

0:02:38 > 0:02:40especially across England and Wales.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43So the summary is, in the run-up to the New Year,

0:02:43 > 0:02:46north-western parts of the UK are actually more likely to have

0:02:46 > 0:02:49the breezier weather, some cloud and bits and pieces of rain.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51That's the far north-west of the country.

0:02:51 > 0:02:55But the bulk of England and Wales, certainly way south-east,

0:02:55 > 0:02:59is looking quite sunny with that frost and fog in the morning.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02And then as we head towards New Year's Eve, there will be a battle

0:03:02 > 0:03:04happening across our part of the world.

0:03:04 > 0:03:07Mild air tries to come back in again.

0:03:07 > 0:03:09Cold air tries to win in from the north.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12Which of these is going to win?

0:03:12 > 0:03:18The thinking is, as we head into 2017, that colder air will win

0:03:18 > 0:03:20but exactly how cold it is going to get

0:03:20 > 0:03:22and whether we get much wintry weather with this

0:03:22 > 0:03:25is still a little uncertain.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28But things are going to finally cool off a little bit.
