0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello, there. It certainly was a cold start today on Thursday,

0:00:04 > 0:00:06minus 3, minus 4, minus five,

0:00:06 > 0:00:08but it did lead to some very picturesque scenery.

0:00:08 > 0:00:10This was captured

0:00:10 > 0:00:12by one of our weather watchers in Oxfordshire,

0:00:12 > 0:00:13a lovely winter scene

0:00:13 > 0:00:15with the frost on the trees,

0:00:15 > 0:00:17some sunshine beating down, as well,

0:00:17 > 0:00:19but the frost also on the roofs, on the hedges,

0:00:19 > 0:00:20the fences and on the ground,

0:00:20 > 0:00:22but where we saw the sunshine by daytime,

0:00:22 > 0:00:23come the evening,

0:00:23 > 0:00:25temperatures dropped away quite quickly

0:00:25 > 0:00:26and we saw the fog reforming.

0:00:26 > 0:00:29This is the view from one of our weather watchers in Derbyshire.

0:00:29 > 0:00:31Now, the extent of the fog overnight

0:00:31 > 0:00:32is open to some question marks,

0:00:32 > 0:00:34cos some extra cloud is drifting in from the west,

0:00:34 > 0:00:36so, by the end of the night,

0:00:36 > 0:00:37I suspect East Anglia and the south-east

0:00:37 > 0:00:39will see the worst of the fog,

0:00:39 > 0:00:40which will lift slowly into low cloud,

0:00:40 > 0:00:42or keep it quite grey or quite cold here.

0:00:42 > 0:00:43Notice the south-westerly breeze

0:00:43 > 0:00:45for Northern Ireland and Scotland -

0:00:45 > 0:00:48that's going to keep temperatures on the mild side, actually,

0:00:48 > 0:00:50around about 11 degrees for Glasgow and for Belfast,

0:00:50 > 0:00:53but where the low cloud lingers, well, 5, 6, 7 degrees.

0:00:53 > 0:00:54There'll be some breaks in the cloud,

0:00:54 > 0:00:56mainly to the east side of higher ground -

0:00:56 > 0:00:58but notice we do have a weather front in the north of Scotland,

0:00:58 > 0:00:59that's bringing some rain,

0:00:59 > 0:01:01and there is a bit of a breeze associated with that,

0:01:01 > 0:01:03and it stays breezy through the evening.

0:01:03 > 0:01:05That rain just drifts a little bit further south.

0:01:05 > 0:01:07Elsewhere, a lot of dry but rather cloudy weather,

0:01:07 > 0:01:10very patchy fog across the south-western quadrant of the UK,

0:01:10 > 0:01:12but I don't think it'll be too much of an issue.

0:01:12 > 0:01:13New Year's Eve itself -

0:01:13 > 0:01:15well, that weather front's going to bring

0:01:15 > 0:01:17some pretty wet weather across much of Scotland,

0:01:17 > 0:01:19it'll drift south into Northern Ireland, as well -

0:01:19 > 0:01:21maybe a little bit of rain to the north-west of England,

0:01:21 > 0:01:24but the south-westerly breeze affecting much more of the UK,

0:01:24 > 0:01:26so not quite so cold in the south and south-east.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28We might even see double figures, temporarily.

0:01:28 > 0:01:30And then, through the New Year's Eve evening,

0:01:30 > 0:01:32that's where the front eventually clears away

0:01:32 > 0:01:34from southern Scotland and Northern Ireland.

0:01:34 > 0:01:36By midnight, it's probably across northern England

0:01:36 > 0:01:37and into North Wales,

0:01:37 > 0:01:39and it continues its journey ever southwards,

0:01:39 > 0:01:41bringing some rain with it - but behind it,

0:01:41 > 0:01:42some much colder air -

0:01:42 > 0:01:45cold enough for some snow showers in northern Scotland

0:01:45 > 0:01:47on New Year's Day - maybe not just northern Scotland,

0:01:47 > 0:01:50the southern uplands could probably see some snow showers, as well,

0:01:50 > 0:01:52but there is some spells of sunshine to be had,

0:01:52 > 0:01:54but it's going to be a pretty grey day, I suspect,

0:01:54 > 0:01:56across East Anglia and much of the Midlands and the south-east,

0:01:56 > 0:01:59with cloud and rain, which eventually pulls away.

0:01:59 > 0:02:01But we keep that northerly breeze going,

0:02:01 > 0:02:04so, as we get towards Monday morning,

0:02:04 > 0:02:05it's going to be cold

0:02:05 > 0:02:07and it'll be quite frosty, as well.

0:02:07 > 0:02:08Could be some icy patches around -

0:02:08 > 0:02:11but, actually, Monday itself looks like a pretty reasonable day,

0:02:11 > 0:02:12particularly in those inland areas.

0:02:12 > 0:02:15A good deal of dry, bright and sunny weather to be had

0:02:15 > 0:02:17after a frosty start.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19A few showers coming in on that breeze,

0:02:19 > 0:02:22mainly to coastal areas in the north, east and west,

0:02:22 > 0:02:24and after that cold start, it'll be a cold day

0:02:24 > 0:02:25in spite of some sunshine -

0:02:25 > 0:02:284, 5, 6 degrees, maybe 7 if you are lucky.

0:02:28 > 0:02:32So, a cold start to Tuesday, but a cloudy day, I think,

0:02:32 > 0:02:33a cloudier day overall.

0:02:33 > 0:02:36There'll be a little bit of sunshine in the southernmost counties,

0:02:36 > 0:02:38and maybe towards the eastern side of Scotland,

0:02:38 > 0:02:40and a few showers on the western side of Scotland -

0:02:40 > 0:02:42but, again, after a cold start, we are well into single figures.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44It's 5, 6 or 7 degrees.

0:02:44 > 0:02:46Now, what about the middle of next week?

0:02:46 > 0:02:48Well, actually, there's quite a strong jet stream

0:02:48 > 0:02:49coming out of the United States,

0:02:49 > 0:02:51but once it gets to our side of the Atlantic,

0:02:51 > 0:02:53it kind of splits, really, and really weakens off.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55One arm goes to the north of the UK, one arm goes to the south,

0:02:55 > 0:02:58so it's not really the jet stream that'll be influencing our weather

0:02:58 > 0:02:59through the middle of the week,

0:02:59 > 0:03:01it'll be this high in the middle of the Atlantic.

0:03:01 > 0:03:04Remember, winds go clockwise around that high,

0:03:04 > 0:03:07so we're going to import some relatively mild air

0:03:07 > 0:03:08across most parts of the UK,

0:03:08 > 0:03:10but I suspect it will be temporary,

0:03:10 > 0:03:13temperatures probably only getting to 10 or 11 degrees,

0:03:13 > 0:03:15and then, later on next week,

0:03:15 > 0:03:17it looks like it'll be turning a good deal colder.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20There'll be a brisk wind coming down from the north or north-west,

0:03:20 > 0:03:22so it might bring some rain, at times,

0:03:22 > 0:03:24but I suspect it will be cold enough for some wintry showers

0:03:24 > 0:03:26mainly in the northern half of the UK.

0:03:26 > 0:03:27I'll be back tomorrow night

0:03:27 > 0:03:28with an update.
