0:00:01 > 0:00:02Hello, and happy new year.

0:00:02 > 0:00:052016 ended on a relatively mild and cloudy note.

0:00:05 > 0:00:082017 has kicked off with a different feel -

0:00:08 > 0:00:09it's been clearer and colder.

0:00:09 > 0:00:10We've had views such as this one

0:00:10 > 0:00:12taken by one of our Weather Watchers

0:00:12 > 0:00:14in Derbyshire on bank holiday Monday.

0:00:14 > 0:00:17Now, as we head through the next couple of days, then,

0:00:17 > 0:00:18things are staying largely settled.

0:00:18 > 0:00:20There'll be some frost around overnight,

0:00:20 > 0:00:23but also a bit of wintry sunshine coming through by day, too.

0:00:23 > 0:00:25So, here's the pressure set-up.

0:00:25 > 0:00:28We've got high pressure sitting out towards the west -

0:00:28 > 0:00:30still quite windy towards the north-east.

0:00:30 > 0:00:32We've got a lot of isobars on the map here,

0:00:32 > 0:00:34and a frontal system trying to push in.

0:00:34 > 0:00:37So, through the course of Tuesday, it starts off cold and frosty,

0:00:37 > 0:00:39and there'll be some wintry sunshine

0:00:39 > 0:00:40across many southern parts of the country,

0:00:40 > 0:00:43but at the north, a little bit more in the way of cloud,

0:00:43 > 0:00:44bringing slightly milder conditions.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46Eight or nine degrees here.

0:00:46 > 0:00:48There'll be some rain across the north-west of Scotland,

0:00:48 > 0:00:50where it will be quite windy, too,

0:00:50 > 0:00:52whereas further south lighter winds

0:00:52 > 0:00:54and more in the way of brightness, too.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56Then, as we move through the course of Tuesday night

0:00:56 > 0:00:57and on into Wednesday,

0:00:57 > 0:00:59once again we'll see another plunge of colder air

0:00:59 > 0:01:01coming in from the Arctic,

0:01:01 > 0:01:03particularly affecting these exposed North Sea coasts,

0:01:03 > 0:01:05so, for eastern Scotland and eastern England

0:01:05 > 0:01:08there'll be some sunshine, but it will feel quite chilly,

0:01:08 > 0:01:10and there could be one or two showers coming in.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13Dry elsewhere, a little bit cloudier towards the south-west,

0:01:13 > 0:01:14eight or nine degrees,

0:01:14 > 0:01:17further east, temperatures typically four or five.

0:01:17 > 0:01:19So, looking through the middle part of the week, then -

0:01:19 > 0:01:22high pressure is dominating the weather,

0:01:22 > 0:01:24but we've also got this frontal system

0:01:24 > 0:01:27which is just decaying towards the south-west,

0:01:27 > 0:01:29so Wednesday night it's going to be a cold night

0:01:29 > 0:01:31right down the spine of the country.

0:01:31 > 0:01:33You can see those temperatures even in the towns and cities

0:01:33 > 0:01:35down below freezing.

0:01:35 > 0:01:36In the countryside,

0:01:36 > 0:01:38a very cold and a frosty start to Thursday morning.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40High pressure still with us on Thursday,

0:01:40 > 0:01:42but we'll start to see these frontal systems

0:01:42 > 0:01:44in the Atlantic, pivoting round,

0:01:44 > 0:01:48trying to move back in from the north-west as we end the week.

0:01:48 > 0:01:51So, Thursday itself relatively dry and quiet once again.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54A good deal of sunshine and quite a cold feel to the weather.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56Some places not getting above around two or three degrees,

0:01:56 > 0:01:59but we will see increasing cloud and breeze moving in

0:01:59 > 0:02:00from the north-west.

0:02:00 > 0:02:02That's down to this frontal system here.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04As we move through the day on Friday,

0:02:04 > 0:02:07it looks like that front will start to push its way across the UK.

0:02:07 > 0:02:09It's tending to weaken as it does so,

0:02:09 > 0:02:12but there will be a spell of wetter and windier weather moving

0:02:12 > 0:02:15gradually south-eastwards across the course of Friday,

0:02:15 > 0:02:17bringing a milder theme,

0:02:17 > 0:02:19but also a lot of cloud and some outbreaks of rain.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21That front may linger for a time on Saturday,

0:02:21 > 0:02:24but it should ease away towards the south,

0:02:24 > 0:02:26allowing high pressure once again.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28Drier and slightly cooler conditions to return

0:02:28 > 0:02:30as we move through the course of Saturday -

0:02:30 > 0:02:32then on into the second half of the weekend,

0:02:32 > 0:02:35for Sunday and beyond we should see more of a northerly influence,

0:02:35 > 0:02:37once again, to our weather.

0:02:37 > 0:02:38So, a colder spell of weather

0:02:38 > 0:02:40as we start next week.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42It does look once again like high pressure

0:02:42 > 0:02:44will be the dominant factor,

0:02:44 > 0:02:45in fact, in the weather

0:02:45 > 0:02:46as we head through the course of next week,

0:02:46 > 0:02:49but some uncertainty about the exact position of this high pressure.

0:02:49 > 0:02:52The most likely scenario is the high will be towards the south-west,

0:02:52 > 0:02:54drawing in an Atlantic influence to our weather,

0:02:54 > 0:02:57so, relatively mild. There could be some cloud towards the north-west,

0:02:57 > 0:03:01but sunny and potentially frosty towards the south-east.

0:03:01 > 0:03:03A less likely scenario

0:03:03 > 0:03:06is that high could be orientated more out towards the north-east,

0:03:06 > 0:03:09and that will draw in this flow of air

0:03:09 > 0:03:12from the likes of Scandinavia and northern parts of Europe,

0:03:12 > 0:03:15bringing colder, clearer conditions with more sunshine by day,

0:03:15 > 0:03:17and frost overnight, but either way,

0:03:17 > 0:03:19it does look like with that high pressure around,

0:03:19 > 0:03:22things are set to stay mostly dry through next week.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24Not quite as chilly as it has been this week,

0:03:24 > 0:03:27with a return to frost and fog at times. That's it, bye for now.

0:03:30 > 0:03:33# Remember when we were young

0:03:33 > 0:03:35# Breakin' every rule they made

0:03:35 > 0:03:38# I'll never change what we've done

0:03:38 > 0:03:40# It made us who we are today... #

0:03:40 > 0:03:41Something's coming.

0:03:41 > 0:03:43Whatever's coming,

0:03:43 > 0:03:44I'll know when it begins.
