0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello, there. Yes, I know it's early days,

0:00:04 > 0:00:07but so far our January weather has not been too troubling.

0:00:07 > 0:00:09We have seen winter features from day to day,

0:00:09 > 0:00:10and, in actual fact,

0:00:10 > 0:00:11with clear skies by day

0:00:11 > 0:00:13leading to a hard frost through the night,

0:00:13 > 0:00:16we've some beautiful Weather Watchers pictures sent in -

0:00:16 > 0:00:17but, once the frost has lifted

0:00:17 > 0:00:18and the ice has cleared,

0:00:18 > 0:00:21we've had some glorious spells of sunshine, as well.

0:00:21 > 0:00:22This was Tuesday afternoon

0:00:22 > 0:00:24down in the south-west, in Cornwall -

0:00:24 > 0:00:25certainly the place to be.

0:00:25 > 0:00:27Some stormy skies further north and east,

0:00:27 > 0:00:29and some rough seas, as well,

0:00:29 > 0:00:31and it looks as though we will continue to see,

0:00:31 > 0:00:32up into the north-east,

0:00:32 > 0:00:35rough seas through the course of the day today.

0:00:35 > 0:00:36Still a bit more of a breeze.

0:00:36 > 0:00:37This weak weather front

0:00:37 > 0:00:39continues to sink its way south and west.

0:00:39 > 0:00:42It's not really producing that much in the way of rain.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45A band of cloud, drizzly rain sinking south-west,

0:00:45 > 0:00:47so, a slow improvement through the Midlands, North Wales,

0:00:47 > 0:00:50Northern Ireland and anywhere north of that.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53Beautiful blue sky and sunshine for much of Wednesday afternoon.

0:00:53 > 0:00:55Always the risk of a few sharp showers

0:00:55 > 0:00:57with that wind off the North Sea coast,

0:00:57 > 0:00:59highs of 4 to 9 degrees,

0:00:59 > 0:01:02but, with clear skies by day, that's going to lead to clear skies

0:01:02 > 0:01:03through the night,

0:01:03 > 0:01:06and temperatures again falling away really quite sharply.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09Widely, even in towns and city centres,

0:01:09 > 0:01:11temperatures close to or just below freezing,

0:01:11 > 0:01:13so, in more rural spots,

0:01:13 > 0:01:15we could see lows down to minus 5,

0:01:15 > 0:01:17minus 6 degrees - maybe even lower,

0:01:17 > 0:01:19so, it's going to be a bitterly cold start

0:01:19 > 0:01:20to Thursday morning.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23Hopefully, though, yet again with some blue sky and sunshine.

0:01:23 > 0:01:25We need to keep an eye on some freezing fog patches,

0:01:25 > 0:01:27and I will keep you posted on developments of that,

0:01:27 > 0:01:30but through the day, dry, lots of sunshine coming through,

0:01:30 > 0:01:31bit more of a breeze

0:01:31 > 0:01:33and thicker cloud out to the west

0:01:33 > 0:01:36because of these fronts that are likely to push in during Friday,

0:01:36 > 0:01:38bringing some breezier conditions, yes -

0:01:38 > 0:01:41outbreaks of rain steadily spilling south and east,

0:01:41 > 0:01:44perhaps staying dry until daylight hours, though,

0:01:44 > 0:01:46across much of the south-east corner.

0:01:46 > 0:01:48It'll be windy with it - some of the rain quite heavy

0:01:48 > 0:01:51across the north-west, and it will continue to sink south.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54Top temperatures of around 7 to 11.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57But as we move out of the weekend, that weather will clear

0:01:57 > 0:02:00across the south, and things quieten down quite nicely.

0:02:00 > 0:02:02High pressure hanging on into the south -

0:02:02 > 0:02:05but it does look as though the weekend doesn't look to bad at all.

0:02:05 > 0:02:06It'll be breezy,

0:02:06 > 0:02:09and the strongest of the winds always the further north you are,

0:02:09 > 0:02:11with a scattering of isolated showers,

0:02:11 > 0:02:13but a largely dry day in the offing on Saturday,

0:02:13 > 0:02:156 to 11 degrees the high,

0:02:15 > 0:02:18the winds perhaps strengthening a little more on Sunday,

0:02:18 > 0:02:20and, because they're coming from a westerly direction,

0:02:20 > 0:02:22always the risk of a few more showers

0:02:22 > 0:02:23on exposed west-facing coasts,

0:02:23 > 0:02:27but, again, a good deal of usable weather in the story.

0:02:27 > 0:02:28So, what's happening, then,

0:02:28 > 0:02:31in the longer six to ten day period?

0:02:31 > 0:02:33Well, this is what we've had so far this January -

0:02:33 > 0:02:36with high pressure dominating across much of the country

0:02:36 > 0:02:37and lows up into the north,

0:02:37 > 0:02:42and we've got this really rather unusual looking jet stream -

0:02:42 > 0:02:43quite flabby - and we can all relate to that,

0:02:43 > 0:02:45really, at this time of year,

0:02:45 > 0:02:48and the jet stream is going to firm up over the next few days,

0:02:48 > 0:02:50and it will become a little more organised

0:02:50 > 0:02:52and a little more fast-moving.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54That's going to allow these low pressures

0:02:54 > 0:02:55to continue to dominate up into the north,

0:02:55 > 0:02:59but the jet stream may well sink a little bit further south

0:02:59 > 0:03:02in the longer six to ten day period, and if that happens,

0:03:02 > 0:03:05the unsettled weather will also sink a little bit further south.

0:03:05 > 0:03:07There is still a level of uncertainty

0:03:07 > 0:03:09as to just where this high is sitting,

0:03:09 > 0:03:10and the influence that's going to have

0:03:10 > 0:03:13across central and southern parts of the UK,

0:03:13 > 0:03:16but it does look as though things will get a little bit more mobile,

0:03:16 > 0:03:18a little more unsettled in the longer term picture.

0:03:18 > 0:03:20So, more unsettled weather into the north,

0:03:20 > 0:03:22potentially drier further south.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25I will, of course, firm up on the position of that high pressure,

0:03:25 > 0:03:27if I can, over the next few days.

0:03:27 > 0:03:28Until then, take care.
