0:00:02 > 0:00:03Hello there. It's been a quiet
0:00:03 > 0:00:04start to the year weather-wise,
0:00:04 > 0:00:06but so far this 2017
0:00:06 > 0:00:08we've seen two faces of January.
0:00:08 > 0:00:11One has been cloudy and rather mild
0:00:11 > 0:00:13with outbreaks of light, patchy rain,
0:00:13 > 0:00:16as you can see across the skyline of London.
0:00:16 > 0:00:18The other, though, has been sparkling -
0:00:18 > 0:00:19a real contrast.
0:00:19 > 0:00:21Blue skies and sunshine by day
0:00:21 > 0:00:23has led to cold nights,
0:00:23 > 0:00:26hard frosts and some icy stretches first thing,
0:00:26 > 0:00:30and it looks likely that that's what we'll see during Thursday.
0:00:30 > 0:00:33After a hard, cold, frosty start,
0:00:33 > 0:00:35the frost will slowly lift away
0:00:35 > 0:00:37but the temperatures will struggle by day.
0:00:37 > 0:00:39Still, the risk of a few isolated showers
0:00:39 > 0:00:41through Lincolnshire and East Anglia,
0:00:41 > 0:00:42slowly fading, and a southerly breeze
0:00:42 > 0:00:44dragging in more cloud perhaps through
0:00:44 > 0:00:46the south-west and into Northern Ireland.
0:00:46 > 0:00:48Here, temperatures will peak
0:00:48 > 0:00:49at around seven or eight Celsius,
0:00:49 > 0:00:51but some lovely sunshine,
0:00:51 > 0:00:53however it will feel cold with temperatures
0:00:53 > 0:00:55just a few degrees above freezing.
0:00:55 > 0:00:58All change as we move out of Thursday into Friday.
0:00:58 > 0:01:00The winds swing round more
0:01:00 > 0:01:01to a south-westerly direction,
0:01:01 > 0:01:03and that's going to push in these weather fronts,
0:01:03 > 0:01:06bringing yet more cloud and outbreaks of rain.
0:01:06 > 0:01:07Now, there could be some heavier bursts
0:01:07 > 0:01:09along west-facing coasts for a time.
0:01:09 > 0:01:11Ahead of it, though,
0:01:11 > 0:01:12we could see some dense fog patches
0:01:12 > 0:01:14in the south-east corner, which we'll
0:01:14 > 0:01:15need to keep a close eye on,
0:01:15 > 0:01:17but as the cloud and the rain drifts its
0:01:17 > 0:01:20way south and east, it drags in milder air,
0:01:20 > 0:01:22and highs of 5-11 Celsius.
0:01:22 > 0:01:23That front clears away
0:01:23 > 0:01:25for the start of the weekend
0:01:25 > 0:01:27and allows high pressure to build back in
0:01:27 > 0:01:28across the south-west.
0:01:28 > 0:01:30The potential for the second half
0:01:30 > 0:01:32of the weekend for weather fronts
0:01:32 > 0:01:33to topple across the extreme top,
0:01:33 > 0:01:36but for the weekend, it's not looking too bad at all.
0:01:36 > 0:01:38It will be noticeably milder.
0:01:38 > 0:01:41There'll be a lot of cloud around and outbreaks of rain, again,
0:01:41 > 0:01:43should be light and patchy,
0:01:43 > 0:01:45just like that first photograph we showed you
0:01:45 > 0:01:47earlier on in this show.
0:01:47 > 0:01:49So, as we start off Saturday, then,
0:01:49 > 0:01:50it will be a quiet start.
0:01:50 > 0:01:52There will be a lot of cloud around.
0:01:52 > 0:01:54Hopefully some breaks and some brightness,
0:01:54 > 0:01:56but, more importantly, look at the temperatures,
0:01:56 > 0:01:596-11 Celsius, so a mild feel to the day.
0:01:59 > 0:02:00There's a risk of, perhaps,
0:02:00 > 0:02:03a slightly fresher breeze just toppling over
0:02:03 > 0:02:04that higher pressure,
0:02:04 > 0:02:06the isobars squeezing together
0:02:06 > 0:02:07and a weather front bringing the risk,
0:02:07 > 0:02:09perhaps, of some light, patchy rain
0:02:09 > 0:02:12up into the extreme north and west.
0:02:12 > 0:02:14So a breezier, showery day here,
0:02:14 > 0:02:16but elsewhere a good deal of dry weather
0:02:16 > 0:02:18in the story, perhaps rather cloudy,
0:02:18 > 0:02:20but again staying pretty mild -
0:02:20 > 0:02:23a similar feel to things, 8-11 Celsius.
0:02:23 > 0:02:25As we move out of Sunday into Monday,
0:02:25 > 0:02:27this area of high pressure
0:02:27 > 0:02:28is going to be important,
0:02:28 > 0:02:30because just where it sits will determine
0:02:30 > 0:02:32what's going to happen with these weather fronts.
0:02:32 > 0:02:34If it drifts off to the south-west,
0:02:34 > 0:02:35it's going to allow
0:02:35 > 0:02:37some wetter and windier weather
0:02:37 > 0:02:38to arrive on Monday,
0:02:38 > 0:02:40with the potential for some stronger winds
0:02:40 > 0:02:41and some heavier rain,
0:02:41 > 0:02:43and that leads us nicely into the
0:02:43 > 0:02:44six-to-ten-day period.
0:02:44 > 0:02:46The position of this high, then,
0:02:46 > 0:02:47is all-important.
0:02:47 > 0:02:48The jet stream looks likely to
0:02:48 > 0:02:51speed up and become a little more organised
0:02:51 > 0:02:52and drift up to the northern
0:02:52 > 0:02:53half of the UK.
0:02:53 > 0:02:54That's going to feed in
0:02:54 > 0:02:55these low pressures,
0:02:55 > 0:02:57moving in off the Atlantic.
0:02:57 > 0:02:58There is the potential,
0:02:58 > 0:03:00just like we were saying yesterday,
0:03:00 > 0:03:01for the jet stream to sink
0:03:01 > 0:03:02just that little bit further south,
0:03:02 > 0:03:04which means that the unsettled weather
0:03:04 > 0:03:06will also come a little further
0:03:06 > 0:03:07south as well,
0:03:07 > 0:03:09so this area of high pressure
0:03:09 > 0:03:11will be pretty important
0:03:11 > 0:03:12and there's still a level of
0:03:12 > 0:03:14uncertainty as to just where
0:03:14 > 0:03:15it's likely to sit.
0:03:15 > 0:03:16But the chances are that
0:03:16 > 0:03:17the wetter and windier weather
0:03:17 > 0:03:19will always be to the further
0:03:19 > 0:03:20north and west,
0:03:20 > 0:03:22It'll be somewhat milder, cloudy
0:03:22 > 0:03:24but largely dry to the south.
0:03:24 > 0:03:26So, as we started off by saying,
0:03:26 > 0:03:28the two faces of January are set to continue.
