0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello. Not a great start to the week for many parts of the UK.

0:00:04 > 0:00:06It's quite windy, fairly chilly,

0:00:06 > 0:00:08and there was a good deal of rain to be had as well.

0:00:08 > 0:00:10An interesting week ahead, though,

0:00:10 > 0:00:11because it's going to get colder and colder

0:00:11 > 0:00:14and as that cold air becomes firmly in place across the UK,

0:00:14 > 0:00:17we're going to see some snow showers developing and some of that snow

0:00:17 > 0:00:20later on this week could get down to much lower levels.

0:00:20 > 0:00:22That's one to keep a pretty close eye on.

0:00:22 > 0:00:23A chilly start to the day today,

0:00:23 > 0:00:25but no snow, just a chilly start,

0:00:25 > 0:00:27but a bright start for many central and eastern areas.

0:00:27 > 0:00:30The best of the sunshine here through the morning.

0:00:30 > 0:00:32More cloud by the afternoon as some patchy rain drifts its way

0:00:32 > 0:00:35from west to east and after a chilly start to the day,

0:00:35 > 0:00:38most of us will stay in single figures, seven, eight, nine degrees

0:00:38 > 0:00:40will be fairly typical, but a few places

0:00:40 > 0:00:43out towards the west may well just about get into double figures.

0:00:43 > 0:00:45Through the evening, a bit of patchy rain for a time,

0:00:45 > 0:00:47East Anglia and the south-east

0:00:47 > 0:00:48as more rain comes into the north-west.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51That sinks its way south so that by dawn on Wednesday

0:00:51 > 0:00:54there's a lot of cloud around, some rain through the Midlands,

0:00:54 > 0:00:57some showers into the north and west of the UK and again quite chilly,

0:00:57 > 0:00:59most places starting off well into single figures.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02But it will be a windy day on Wednesday, very blustery winds

0:01:02 > 0:01:05bringing some snow showers into the north and west.

0:01:05 > 0:01:06The snow mainly over higher grounds,

0:01:06 > 0:01:08but the further south and east you are,

0:01:08 > 0:01:11you should be mostly fine and dry and actually relatively mild,

0:01:11 > 0:01:14ten, 11 or 12 degrees, but a good deal colder further north.

0:01:14 > 0:01:16On the subject of cold, it's been extremely cold for some parts

0:01:16 > 0:01:18of southern and eastern Europe,

0:01:18 > 0:01:20staying very cold in the south of Europe

0:01:20 > 0:01:22through into Thursday, but through Germany, Poland,

0:01:22 > 0:01:25becoming a little bit less cold over the next couple of days.

0:01:25 > 0:01:26Back on our shores,

0:01:26 > 0:01:28through Thursday the winds are still coming in

0:01:28 > 0:01:29from the north or north-west.

0:01:29 > 0:01:31The air's coming down from Iceland, from Greenland.

0:01:31 > 0:01:33Yes, it's going to be a cold day on Thursday,

0:01:33 > 0:01:35a blustery day as well,

0:01:35 > 0:01:37with snow showers in the north and west of the UK,

0:01:37 > 0:01:39some of those getting down to slightly lower levels

0:01:39 > 0:01:40and a chilly feel to things.

0:01:40 > 0:01:43We're well into single figures, then you factor in the winds,

0:01:43 > 0:01:46and for many places it's going to feel like it is sub-zero.

0:01:46 > 0:01:48It's going to feel more like minus two,

0:01:48 > 0:01:49minus three degrees

0:01:49 > 0:01:53in Glasgow, Belfast, Newcastle and Manchester as well.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56So a cold day on Thursday with some snow showers

0:01:56 > 0:01:58and then through Thursday night into Friday,

0:01:58 > 0:02:02a real squeeze in the isobars along the eastern side of the UK

0:02:02 > 0:02:04as the winds continue to come from a long way north,

0:02:04 > 0:02:06so very blustery for eastern Scotland,

0:02:06 > 0:02:09eastern England and with that comes the risk of snow showers

0:02:09 > 0:02:11and some of those again could get down to quite low levels

0:02:11 > 0:02:15and further snow showers in the north and west again on Friday

0:02:15 > 0:02:17and again we are in single figures across the board

0:02:17 > 0:02:19if again you factor in the wind.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22As we head towards the weekend, the winds are now coming in

0:02:22 > 0:02:24from the north-west and weather systems on that wind

0:02:24 > 0:02:27will be bringing a mixture of rain, sleet and some snow.

0:02:27 > 0:02:30Most of the snow on the leading edge of this weather system,

0:02:30 > 0:02:31which will work its way ever eastwards

0:02:31 > 0:02:33and then it turns back to rain,

0:02:33 > 0:02:36but it'll be rain mostly drifting south across England and Wales,

0:02:36 > 0:02:38maybe a bit of snow over higher ground.

0:02:38 > 0:02:40It looks pretty cold into the start of the weekend.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43Second part of the weekend looks equally cold with the winds

0:02:43 > 0:02:44coming down from the north.

0:02:44 > 0:02:46Maybe a bit more from the north-west,

0:02:46 > 0:02:48maybe from the north-east, but either way,

0:02:48 > 0:02:51it looks like it'll be pretty chilly with that northerly wind.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54Then into the coming week, it looks like we'll change

0:02:54 > 0:02:56that wind direction to something more of a westerly wind

0:02:56 > 0:02:59and with that air coming from the middle of the Atlantic,

0:02:59 > 0:03:01it shouldn't be quite so cold,

0:03:01 > 0:03:03but I think it'll be unsettled in the north and west of the UK.

0:03:03 > 0:03:05There'll be weather systems moving through.

0:03:05 > 0:03:07There'll be some spells of rain at times,

0:03:07 > 0:03:09with those areas of low pressure, but further south,

0:03:09 > 0:03:11it looks like high pressure will be the dominant force,

0:03:11 > 0:03:13so with that comes some more settled conditions,

0:03:13 > 0:03:17but also the risk of some fog and frost, but generally speaking,

0:03:17 > 0:03:20it looks a little bit milder into the coming week.

0:03:20 > 0:03:21A bit less windy too.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24Most of any rain we see is likely in the north and west of the UK.

0:03:24 > 0:03:26A good deal drier in the south and east.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28There'll be another update tomorrow night.
