0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello. It looks like our weather won't be making any news headlines

0:00:04 > 0:00:06this week. It is relatively quiet.

0:00:06 > 0:00:08But if you are an avid follower of this forecast,

0:00:08 > 0:00:11you will know this week could have been very different.

0:00:11 > 0:00:13It could have been very cold.

0:00:13 > 0:00:15There's some snow to be seen in Highland Scotland on Monday

0:00:15 > 0:00:19but that's under threat this week, with temperatures at Aviemore

0:00:19 > 0:00:21at eight Celsius, it will be a mild week here.

0:00:21 > 0:00:24On Monday, the coldest air to be found was in the far south-east

0:00:24 > 0:00:27of England, at Kent, where despite the sunshine, 4 Celsius.

0:00:27 > 0:00:31At one stage last week it looked like this week, this cold air

0:00:31 > 0:00:35would be pushing right up across the UK because early last week,

0:00:35 > 0:00:37some of the computer forecasts were indicating that this week's

0:00:37 > 0:00:40weather pattern would look like this.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43That's to say, we'd have high pressure centred over Scandinavia.

0:00:43 > 0:00:46The flow of air around that tapping into the cold continent and

0:00:46 > 0:00:50bringing that cold air across the UK with sharp overnight frost.

0:00:50 > 0:00:52But look, it didn't happen.

0:00:52 > 0:00:55That's sometimes the case with longer range forecasts.

0:00:55 > 0:00:58Those that early last week indicated that is

0:00:58 > 0:01:01a possible solution gave up on that as we went through last week

0:01:01 > 0:01:05and the forecast converged into this idea which is what is actually

0:01:05 > 0:01:08happening, that high pressure wouldn't be over Scandinavia.

0:01:08 > 0:01:13It is a little bit further south. That has an impact on our weather.

0:01:13 > 0:01:16The flow of air around that high pressure actually for

0:01:16 > 0:01:19many of us is coming up from the Atlantic and it is relatively

0:01:19 > 0:01:22mild, double-figure temperatures in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

0:01:22 > 0:01:25But it is just into the far south-east of England.

0:01:25 > 0:01:29We're just tapping into some of that cold continental air.

0:01:29 > 0:01:33So the reality is, this is Tuesday for this week's weather.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36There will be a touch of frost but sunshine to follow

0:01:36 > 0:01:38across East Anglia and south-east England in that cold

0:01:38 > 0:01:39continental air.

0:01:39 > 0:01:42Elsewhere, it is relatively mild, with the Atlantic influence,

0:01:42 > 0:01:45particularly in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48With plenty of cloud and some patchy outbreaks of rain.

0:01:48 > 0:01:52Under the clear skies, East Anglia and parts of southern England

0:01:52 > 0:01:54on Tuesday night and into Wednesday...

0:01:54 > 0:01:56Remember this is where the cold air is.

0:01:56 > 0:01:57There will be a sharper frost,

0:01:57 > 0:01:59temperatures well below freezing in places,

0:01:59 > 0:02:02to start off on Wednesday, whereas elsewhere you've got cloud

0:02:02 > 0:02:05cover, your temperatures hold up.

0:02:05 > 0:02:07So the big picture for Wednesday still

0:02:07 > 0:02:09has the high pressure close by but not centred over Scandinavia,

0:02:09 > 0:02:13further south, so we still have that relatively mild Atlantic air

0:02:13 > 0:02:16pushing in through Scotland and Northern Ireland with plenty cloud.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19A lot of cloud for Northern England, for Midlands, for Wales,

0:02:19 > 0:02:23the best of any sunshine towards the south in the colder air.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26There is little change from Thursday, Friday into

0:02:26 > 0:02:29Saturday because remember this is high pressure.

0:02:29 > 0:02:31Thursday into Friday, spot the difference.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33Saturday is coming up shortly,

0:02:33 > 0:02:35you'll be struggling to see the difference.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38High pressure keeping most places dry, a lot of cloud.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41Count yourself lucky if you see much sunshine.

0:02:41 > 0:02:43Temperatures just starting to come together.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46Not the big extremes between North and South.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49More like five, six, seven degrees at the start of the weekend.

0:02:49 > 0:02:52But at the end of the weekend, and into the start of next week,

0:02:52 > 0:02:55notice no big area of high pressure close by.

0:02:55 > 0:02:59It is weakening away and low pressure is now on the

0:02:59 > 0:03:03doorstep and that is going to become our weather player into next week.

0:03:03 > 0:03:08As jet stream gets stronger, starts to push back in across the UK,

0:03:08 > 0:03:10bringing those in areas of low pressure towards us and

0:03:10 > 0:03:12changing our weather from settled high pressure.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15You know what low pressure means, that means it turns unsettled.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18The winds start to pick up, it'll be wetter at times as well.

0:03:18 > 0:03:20Temperatures will be close to or perhaps

0:03:20 > 0:03:22a little bit above normal, with that Atlantic flow.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25No signs of any significant cold weather between now and

0:03:25 > 0:03:26into the end of January.

0:03:26 > 0:03:30But that could change and if it does, we'll let you know.
