0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello. If you are fan of cold winter weather,

0:00:04 > 0:00:06the past few winters in the UK have no doubt left you

0:00:06 > 0:00:08waiting, waiting and wanting,

0:00:08 > 0:00:10and you may have felt like moving somewhere else.

0:00:10 > 0:00:14North America has seen winter storm after winter storm in recent weeks.

0:00:14 > 0:00:16Still some blue showing up on the chart here

0:00:16 > 0:00:17for the next couple of days.

0:00:17 > 0:00:20We've had an ice storm - a dangerous and disruptive one -

0:00:20 > 0:00:22moving out of the Midwest into the north-east of the USA

0:00:22 > 0:00:24and parts of eastern Canada.

0:00:24 > 0:00:26And spin the globe, to add insult to injury,

0:00:26 > 0:00:29whilst our temperatures have been relatively mild,

0:00:29 > 0:00:31we've seen snow smothering the Greek islands,

0:00:31 > 0:00:34the cold pushing further west towards Iberia.

0:00:34 > 0:00:36Much of continental Europe has temperatures

0:00:36 > 0:00:39just a few degrees below average and some snowfall.

0:00:39 > 0:00:41This is a recent scene from Italy.

0:00:41 > 0:00:45It's all tantalisingly close, but not close enough.

0:00:45 > 0:00:49Our winter so far has been relatively mild.

0:00:49 > 0:00:51Only brief cold snaps. Of course, we had one last week

0:00:51 > 0:00:53where some of us did see some snowfall,

0:00:53 > 0:00:56but for many of us, it didn't last very long.

0:00:56 > 0:00:59So overall, it's been mild, particularly in December,

0:00:59 > 0:01:02only slightly in January so far,

0:01:02 > 0:01:04and for much of the UK, it has been drier than average.

0:01:04 > 0:01:07But, of course, we're just at the halfway stage.

0:01:07 > 0:01:09There is still a lot of winter to get through.

0:01:09 > 0:01:13But the cold air remains at a distance for most of us.

0:01:13 > 0:01:16It is just around this area of high pressure

0:01:16 > 0:01:18starting to just make an inroad

0:01:18 > 0:01:20into parts of the far south-east of the UK

0:01:20 > 0:01:21with below normal temperatures.

0:01:21 > 0:01:24But for many of us around this area of high pressure this week,

0:01:24 > 0:01:26the air is coming back up across the Atlantic

0:01:26 > 0:01:28so it is reasonably mild.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31In fact, very mild across parts of Scotland in particular.

0:01:31 > 0:01:34And that's the set-up again for Wednesday.

0:01:34 > 0:01:36Very frosty start through parts of south-east England

0:01:36 > 0:01:38and East Anglia, but some sunshine to follow.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40Another mild day in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

0:01:40 > 0:01:42Another mainly cloudy day for many of us

0:01:42 > 0:01:44away from the sunshine in the south-east,

0:01:44 > 0:01:45and where you've got the cloud,

0:01:45 > 0:01:47you could have a bit of patchy rain or drizzle.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50Not as much clear weather across southern parts of England

0:01:50 > 0:01:53going through Wednesday night, so not as much frost to come,

0:01:53 > 0:01:57so most of us going into Thursday morning will be frost free.

0:01:57 > 0:01:58Plenty of cloud again.

0:01:58 > 0:02:00You may get a bit of patchy drizzle,

0:02:00 > 0:02:02But actually, most places, despite the cloud,

0:02:02 > 0:02:04looking at a mainly dry story.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07And a similar picture going into Friday.

0:02:07 > 0:02:08What we're doing over the next few days

0:02:08 > 0:02:11is just reducing those temperature differences.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13Where we have had double figures in Scotland,

0:02:13 > 0:02:14the temperature starts to come down.

0:02:14 > 0:02:16where it's been just barely above freezing

0:02:16 > 0:02:19in parts of southern England, the temperature creeps up a few degrees.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21Picture for the weekend has high pressure with us.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24Looks like some colder air will start to push back in

0:02:24 > 0:02:26from the south across the UK,

0:02:26 > 0:02:28so temperatures come down a little bit further,

0:02:28 > 0:02:29particularly into Scotland.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32Just five or six degrees for some of us on Saturday.

0:02:32 > 0:02:34Certainly real change to come, though.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37Perhaps a greater chance of getting some overnight frost,

0:02:37 > 0:02:40a few fog patches around, but plenty of dry weather to come.

0:02:40 > 0:02:44But then, we are eyeing up a change for the start of next week.

0:02:44 > 0:02:46High pressure has been giving us this settled weather.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48Still there for the weekend.

0:02:48 > 0:02:52It's beginning to edge a little bit further south from us,

0:02:52 > 0:02:54and especially the further north you are in the UK,

0:02:54 > 0:02:57you fall under the influence of low pressure systems coming our way

0:02:57 > 0:02:59quite quickly at the start of next week.

0:02:59 > 0:03:01That means stronger winds, spells of wet weather to come

0:03:01 > 0:03:03with some brighter interludes.

0:03:03 > 0:03:05And that change then beginning to affect

0:03:05 > 0:03:07northern parts of the UK -

0:03:07 > 0:03:09initially Scotland and Northern Ireland.

0:03:09 > 0:03:11Then edging little bit further south as we go through the week.

0:03:11 > 0:03:14But there is a tussle next week between low pressure

0:03:14 > 0:03:16to the north-west, high pressure to the south.

0:03:16 > 0:03:17So the further south you are,

0:03:17 > 0:03:19looks like you will hold on to the settled conditions

0:03:19 > 0:03:21for longest next week.

0:03:21 > 0:03:23But looks like even here, eventually, it will turn unsettled.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26But no significant cold weather in the forecast now

0:03:26 > 0:03:27until the end of January.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30But if you do like the cold, there is still February.
