0:00:02 > 0:00:05Hello. January has been dry and we've been watching for the change

0:00:05 > 0:00:08to much more unsettled weather for a some time,

0:00:08 > 0:00:10and it now looks as though it's starting to take place.

0:00:10 > 0:00:13It certainly has been changing through the day on Friday,

0:00:13 > 0:00:16the milder Atlantic air finally bringing some rain into the west.

0:00:16 > 0:00:20Temperatures have risen, and we've started to move this cold air,

0:00:20 > 0:00:23this cold continental European air away from the UK.

0:00:23 > 0:00:25It's a gradual process,

0:00:25 > 0:00:28so across northern and eastern areas we'll have freezing fog,

0:00:28 > 0:00:29we've still had some ice around,

0:00:29 > 0:00:32and we could well still have some cold weather

0:00:32 > 0:00:34through the first part of Saturday morning,

0:00:34 > 0:00:37because after all, it takes a while for the ground to warm up.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40So some of this rain that you see will fall as wintriness

0:00:40 > 0:00:42in the hills, so some sleet and snow,

0:00:42 > 0:00:44and also falling onto the frozen surfaces

0:00:44 > 0:00:45it could actually be quite icy

0:00:45 > 0:00:47for some parts of Northern Ireland in particular,

0:00:47 > 0:00:50western parts of the UK, Scotland, Northern England.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53So that's something to concern ourselves about on Saturday morning,

0:00:53 > 0:00:56but gradually through the day it will get milder.

0:00:56 > 0:01:00Still a lot of very murky weather, some fog and some hill fog around.

0:01:00 > 0:01:02Through the second half of the day, brighter weather coming in

0:01:02 > 0:01:05to Northern Ireland and western England and Wales,

0:01:05 > 0:01:06eventually Scotland as well,

0:01:06 > 0:01:09but the east of Scotland, the east of England,

0:01:09 > 0:01:11could well hang onto some rather grey conditions

0:01:11 > 0:01:13with some showers for much of the day.

0:01:13 > 0:01:15It's not particularly warm, still,

0:01:15 > 0:01:19but 5s and 6s are still better than the 2s and 3s we've seen this week.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22That area of rain finally clears through Saturday night.

0:01:22 > 0:01:25Little ridge of high pressure temporarily, but not for long,

0:01:25 > 0:01:27and this is what's giving us a headache for the weekend -

0:01:27 > 0:01:32this area of cloud and rain and how far north it's going to come.

0:01:32 > 0:01:34And the computer models have been disagreeing a little bit,

0:01:34 > 0:01:36so there's still a question mark.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39It looks at the moment, and has done quite consistently,

0:01:39 > 0:01:40like Scotland should have a dry and fine day.

0:01:40 > 0:01:43We'll get off to a dry and fine start in eastern areas.

0:01:43 > 0:01:46But now it looks as if some of the heaviest rain could

0:01:46 > 0:01:49scoot up across Northern Ireland and western parts of the country.

0:01:49 > 0:01:50Strong winds with it, as well.

0:01:50 > 0:01:53And there'll be some damp weather elsewhere across England and Wales,

0:01:53 > 0:01:56certainly a cloudier and damper day than we've had for some time,

0:01:56 > 0:02:00but at least it'll be mild in the rain.

0:02:00 > 0:02:02In the north, well, some sunshine,

0:02:02 > 0:02:04but probably 5 to 7 degrees the high.

0:02:04 > 0:02:08Then Monday. That rain, as you saw, moves away.

0:02:08 > 0:02:10We've got the next band of rain moving in.

0:02:10 > 0:02:14So it's a much more unsettled picture, really,

0:02:14 > 0:02:15through Monday and Tuesday.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18Look at the bigger picture - you can see that low pressure

0:02:18 > 0:02:19running up the western side of the UK.

0:02:19 > 0:02:23It's still taking its time to get across to the eastern side,

0:02:23 > 0:02:25so not as much rain here.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28It still looks as if the heaviest rain and the strongest winds,

0:02:28 > 0:02:30with gales or severe gales, will be in the north and west.

0:02:30 > 0:02:32Eventually those weather fronts

0:02:32 > 0:02:34do make their way across England and Wales,

0:02:34 > 0:02:38and look at the temperatures! Double figures for all.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41So there's our low pressure, there's our weather front on Tuesday

0:02:41 > 0:02:42gradually moving eastwards.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44The next low pressure is lining up for Wednesday,

0:02:44 > 0:02:47so you're seeing the pattern as we move through the week.

0:02:47 > 0:02:50That high pressure is much, much further eastwards now

0:02:50 > 0:02:52and has relinquished its grip on the UK.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54So early in the week it's still close by,

0:02:54 > 0:02:57so it's limiting how quickly the wind and rain

0:02:57 > 0:02:59gets across to the eastern half of the country.

0:02:59 > 0:03:01It will be wetter and windier in the north-west.

0:03:01 > 0:03:05But from midweek on, really, those low pressures look as if

0:03:05 > 0:03:08they will push right across the UK towards Scandinavia.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11Behind them there'll be temporary incursions of chillier air

0:03:11 > 0:03:13with showers, and they'll be wintry on the hills,

0:03:13 > 0:03:17but then there'll be another low pressure quickly following it in,

0:03:17 > 0:03:19so bringing all parts some spells of wind

0:03:19 > 0:03:22and some rain as well. As I say, early in the week

0:03:22 > 0:03:24they're blocked slightly by that high pressure,

0:03:24 > 0:03:26and there will be some chillier interludes,

0:03:26 > 0:03:28just not as cold as it's been in the past week or so.
