0:00:02 > 0:00:04At this time of year, we can often get weather stories

0:00:04 > 0:00:07which reflect the battle between winter into spring,

0:00:07 > 0:00:09and that's what we've seen this week

0:00:09 > 0:00:11across the pond, in New York in the US.

0:00:11 > 0:00:14On Wednesday, they had a high of 17 degrees.

0:00:14 > 0:00:18By Thursday afternoon, a daytime high of just -2.

0:00:18 > 0:00:21And it was accompanied by some snow as well.

0:00:21 > 0:00:23This was the scene at Times Square

0:00:23 > 0:00:26during the course of the day on Thursday.

0:00:26 > 0:00:29Now, we've had a similar kind of story this week,

0:00:29 > 0:00:30not quite as extreme.

0:00:30 > 0:00:32Just like the UK, we tend to do things

0:00:32 > 0:00:34in a slightly smaller fashion.

0:00:34 > 0:00:36But out to the west, we had some blue sky, sunshine

0:00:36 > 0:00:39and some spring warmth on Wednesday.

0:00:39 > 0:00:41Cold out to the east.

0:00:41 > 0:00:43And that cold air and cloud

0:00:43 > 0:00:46filtered its way steadily westwards during Thursday,

0:00:46 > 0:00:47so a real change,

0:00:47 > 0:00:51a contrast in the feel of the story generally across the country.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53And that's going to stay with us for the next few days.

0:00:53 > 0:00:55The high pressure across Scandinavia

0:00:55 > 0:00:57still in the driving seat at the moment,

0:00:57 > 0:01:00drifting in this easterly breeze,

0:01:00 > 0:01:02drifting a lot of cloud across the country

0:01:02 > 0:01:04and making it feel pretty disappointing.

0:01:04 > 0:01:07We're likely to continue to see a scattering of showers,

0:01:07 > 0:01:09showers of rain to the coast.

0:01:09 > 0:01:11Just head further inland, with a little bit of height,

0:01:11 > 0:01:13there could be some sleet and snow.

0:01:13 > 0:01:15But on Friday, there will be some sunshine around.

0:01:15 > 0:01:18Scotland, Northern Ireland, perhaps parts of Pembrokeshire and Cornwall.

0:01:18 > 0:01:20But it's going to be a cold day.

0:01:20 > 0:01:231 or 2 degrees on the east coast.

0:01:23 > 0:01:254 or 5 at the best further west.

0:01:25 > 0:01:27Now, as we move out of Friday,

0:01:27 > 0:01:29with those clear skies and sunshine across Scotland,

0:01:29 > 0:01:33the temperatures will fall away quite sharply through the night.

0:01:33 > 0:01:35Lows not out of the question of -10.

0:01:35 > 0:01:37And at the same time, we're likely to see

0:01:37 > 0:01:41a few more enhanced showers drifting further inland.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44Now, this is when we could see a few centimetres of snow

0:01:44 > 0:01:46settling at higher ground,

0:01:46 > 0:01:48maybe even a significant dusting at lower levels.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50But don't get too excited about it.

0:01:50 > 0:01:52As we go through the day on Saturday,

0:01:52 > 0:01:55the snow showers are likely to turn back to rain.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57And it's still going to feel pretty cold and grey.

0:01:57 > 0:01:59Still some sunshine, though,

0:01:59 > 0:02:02likely across Scotland and Northern Ireland.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04Very little change in the scenario

0:02:04 > 0:02:06through the second half of the weekend.

0:02:06 > 0:02:10A different day, the same old shade of grey, I'm afraid.

0:02:10 > 0:02:135 to 7 degrees, still rather breezy, though, as well.

0:02:13 > 0:02:15You will need a few extra layers.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17As we move into the start of a new working week,

0:02:17 > 0:02:19on Monday, the breeze picks up a little

0:02:19 > 0:02:22and potentially helps to stir up that cloud,

0:02:22 > 0:02:25break it up a little across England and Wales.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28And as a result, we'll start to see those temperatures climbing,

0:02:28 > 0:02:32maybe up as high as 9 degrees across the south coast.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35And that marks the indication of something changing a little.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37Still the high pressure very much in control,

0:02:37 > 0:02:40blocking these weather fronts and areas of low

0:02:40 > 0:02:42out in the Atlantic, spiralling around,

0:02:42 > 0:02:44but the isobars will squeeze together

0:02:44 > 0:02:47and the wind may well change direction.

0:02:47 > 0:02:51Let's just recap before we look at the longer six- to ten-day period.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54We have seen this blocking high pressure across Scandinavia

0:02:54 > 0:02:56driving in this easterly flow,

0:02:56 > 0:03:00producing the cloud and the cool-ish wintry feel to things.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03But the high pressure looks likely to sink south a little.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06Still a level of uncertainty where that's going to be sitting,

0:03:06 > 0:03:08but if it does sit close towards the Alps,

0:03:08 > 0:03:10it'll drag in the southerly flow.

0:03:10 > 0:03:12A milder source, certainly,

0:03:12 > 0:03:15and that could potentially give us some spring-like weather,

0:03:15 > 0:03:16dare I say it,

0:03:16 > 0:03:19Maybe even the snowdrops putting in an appearance

0:03:19 > 0:03:20with a little bit of sunshine.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22However, clear skies by day

0:03:22 > 0:03:26will still lead to the potential of some frost and some fog

0:03:26 > 0:03:29overnight and first thing in the morning. Take care.
