0:00:02 > 0:00:03Hello. We are not done with winter yet

0:00:03 > 0:00:06and those of you who live across the eastern half of the UK

0:00:06 > 0:00:08will know exactly what I'm talking about.

0:00:08 > 0:00:12This Weather Watchers picture from Friday afternoon in Newcastle

0:00:12 > 0:00:13really tells the scene -

0:00:13 > 0:00:16a light dusting of snow, a cold feel

0:00:16 > 0:00:19across the country and that story continues through the weekend.

0:00:19 > 0:00:21A lot of cloud around,

0:00:21 > 0:00:22the showers will be wintry in nature

0:00:22 > 0:00:24and the wind will strengthen as well,

0:00:24 > 0:00:26just making it feel even colder

0:00:26 > 0:00:27if that's possible.

0:00:27 > 0:00:28Now we'll start off with

0:00:28 > 0:00:30some wintry showers stretching through

0:00:30 > 0:00:32eastern Scotland across the north-east of England

0:00:32 > 0:00:33and some of those will push

0:00:33 > 0:00:35a little bit further westwards

0:00:35 > 0:00:37through the course of the afternoon,

0:00:37 > 0:00:39something that we've not seen in recent days,

0:00:39 > 0:00:42so I suspect by three o'clock Saturday afternoon

0:00:42 > 0:00:44there's likely to be a few showers,

0:00:44 > 0:00:45showers chiefly of rain,

0:00:45 > 0:00:46across the West Country,

0:00:46 > 0:00:48but not a particularly warm feel

0:00:48 > 0:00:49to the day, 3 or 4 degrees.

0:00:49 > 0:00:51There'll be some showers or sleet

0:00:51 > 0:00:53and snow mixed in there across Wales

0:00:53 > 0:00:55and really it will be rain

0:00:55 > 0:00:56close to the coastline

0:00:56 > 0:00:57in the south-east corner,

0:00:57 > 0:00:58but a cold feel when you add on

0:00:58 > 0:01:00the strength of that wind.

0:01:00 > 0:01:01Gales not out of the question,

0:01:01 > 0:01:02with further snow showers

0:01:02 > 0:01:04across the north of England.

0:01:04 > 0:01:06Northern Ireland and north-west Scotland,

0:01:06 > 0:01:08you will see the best of any brightness,

0:01:08 > 0:01:10but again into eastern Scotland,

0:01:10 > 0:01:12those nagging nuisance showers

0:01:12 > 0:01:13set to continue and in fact

0:01:13 > 0:01:15they'll enhance through the night

0:01:15 > 0:01:16on Saturday into Sunday,

0:01:16 > 0:01:18across the Pennines and the Peak District

0:01:18 > 0:01:20for a time, yet more accumulations

0:01:20 > 0:01:22of snow likely, but then as we go

0:01:22 > 0:01:24through Sunday, a brisk easterly wind,

0:01:24 > 0:01:26but it's likely that we'll see

0:01:26 > 0:01:28the snow showers turning back to rain.

0:01:28 > 0:01:30To the north and south perhaps

0:01:30 > 0:01:31something a little bit drier

0:01:31 > 0:01:33and perhaps brighter into the north-west,

0:01:33 > 0:01:35but still not particularly warm.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38Now as we move out of Sunday into Monday,

0:01:38 > 0:01:41we will start to see the isobars squeezing up,

0:01:41 > 0:01:42the wind strengthening again,

0:01:42 > 0:01:44but starting to swing round to a south-easterly,

0:01:44 > 0:01:46so there is a glimmer of hope

0:01:46 > 0:01:48in the story as we look further ahead.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50On Monday, there'll be a little more

0:01:50 > 0:01:51in the way of sunshine

0:01:51 > 0:01:54breaking up that cloud, that breeze,

0:01:54 > 0:01:55a little bit of drier air, not...

0:01:55 > 0:01:58not quite as cold as it has been,

0:01:58 > 0:02:005 to 8 degrees the high.

0:02:00 > 0:02:02As we move out of Monday into Tuesday,

0:02:02 > 0:02:05we'll start to see the winds really slowly pivoting around from

0:02:05 > 0:02:08a south-easterly eventually to a southerly direction.

0:02:08 > 0:02:10This weather front likely to threaten

0:02:10 > 0:02:11into the south-west.

0:02:11 > 0:02:12It might bring some cloud

0:02:12 > 0:02:14and outbreaks of rain,

0:02:14 > 0:02:15but it'll start to, again,

0:02:15 > 0:02:17bring a slightly less cold feel

0:02:17 > 0:02:20across the country, 6 to 11, double digits

0:02:20 > 0:02:22in the far south-west.

0:02:22 > 0:02:24As we move into Wednesday,

0:02:24 > 0:02:25more of a southerly flow,

0:02:25 > 0:02:26a good deal of dry weather

0:02:26 > 0:02:28is expected in the story,

0:02:28 > 0:02:29lighter winds, so if you get

0:02:29 > 0:02:31some sunshine coming through,

0:02:31 > 0:02:3310, 12 degrees will certainly feel

0:02:33 > 0:02:35much better than it has done of late.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37So, as we go on to the latter stages of the week,

0:02:37 > 0:02:40it looks likely... it's going to be a slow process

0:02:40 > 0:02:43but this milder air will push right across the country

0:02:43 > 0:02:45and we've lost that bitterly cold

0:02:45 > 0:02:47wintry flavour.

0:02:47 > 0:02:48As we look further afield,

0:02:48 > 0:02:50the six- to ten-day period,

0:02:50 > 0:02:51that area of high pressure

0:02:51 > 0:02:52that's so been dominant

0:02:52 > 0:02:54just recently, if that sits close

0:02:54 > 0:02:56towards France, there's the potential

0:02:56 > 0:02:59of allowing those areas of low pressure to move in

0:02:59 > 0:03:00and that will bring some wet weather,

0:03:00 > 0:03:02so something perhaps a little more mobile,

0:03:02 > 0:03:04a little bit more unsettled,

0:03:04 > 0:03:06however there is the potential

0:03:06 > 0:03:08and this is the less likely scenario,

0:03:08 > 0:03:09but if that high pressure drifts

0:03:09 > 0:03:11a little bit further north

0:03:11 > 0:03:12and just centres itself more across

0:03:12 > 0:03:14England and Wales, the low pressures

0:03:14 > 0:03:16will skip to the extreme north

0:03:16 > 0:03:17and we're likely

0:03:17 > 0:03:19to stay drier yet again.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22That will cause a problem with some early morning frost and fog,

0:03:22 > 0:03:25but once that lifts, we could see some dry weather

0:03:25 > 0:03:27continuing into the longer

0:03:27 > 0:03:29six- to ten-day period.

0:03:29 > 0:03:30Take care.
