0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello. Well, belatedly perhaps the winter has been showing its teeth
0:00:04 > 0:00:06over the last few days, hasn't it?
0:00:06 > 0:00:08Cold east wind and some snow for some of us.
0:00:08 > 0:00:10The cold spell is not going to last all that long.
0:00:10 > 0:00:13In fact, the blues get swept away fairly promptly and next week
0:00:13 > 0:00:17we get much warmer air indicated by the yellows here,
0:00:17 > 0:00:19a real taste of spring for some of us in actual fact.
0:00:19 > 0:00:21Let me show you in a different way, through this weekend
0:00:21 > 0:00:23we're struggling to get much higher than what,
0:00:23 > 0:00:243 or 4 degrees,
0:00:24 > 0:00:27but temperatures do rise steadily and quite widely will be
0:00:27 > 0:00:30into double figures come the middle of the week and with some sunshine,
0:00:30 > 0:00:31you'll notice the difference,
0:00:31 > 0:00:32that's for sure.
0:00:32 > 0:00:34It doesn't feel much like spring
0:00:34 > 0:00:35out the at the moment, though does it,
0:00:35 > 0:00:37with that cold easterly wind still?
0:00:37 > 0:00:38Lots of cloud, rain, sleet, snow,
0:00:38 > 0:00:41most of the stuff over this high ground, Wales,
0:00:41 > 0:00:42the Peak District and the Pennines
0:00:42 > 0:00:44where some high level routes
0:00:44 > 0:00:45could be quite badly affected.
0:00:45 > 0:00:47Mostly rain at lower levels,
0:00:47 > 0:00:48not much sunshine, though,
0:00:48 > 0:00:50grey and cold, 3 and 4 degrees
0:00:50 > 0:00:52is the best I can offer you
0:00:52 > 0:00:54in many places, not helped by the strength
0:00:54 > 0:00:56of the wind which will actually strengthen
0:00:56 > 0:00:57further through Sunday night
0:00:57 > 0:01:00and on into Monday as indicated
0:01:00 > 0:01:02by the tightening of the isobars.
0:01:02 > 0:01:05Monday will be a very windy day indeed,
0:01:05 > 0:01:06particularly out west,
0:01:06 > 0:01:08where we're expecting gales
0:01:08 > 0:01:10around exposed coasts and headlands.
0:01:10 > 0:01:11But we are going to see
0:01:11 > 0:01:13increasing amounts of sunshine
0:01:13 > 0:01:14spreading up from the south.
0:01:14 > 0:01:16A real change in the weather
0:01:16 > 0:01:17for many of us and with higher
0:01:17 > 0:01:19temperatures as well,
0:01:19 > 0:01:21it's going to feel much more pleasant
0:01:21 > 0:01:22across the southern half of the UK,
0:01:22 > 0:01:24still pretty raw further north
0:01:24 > 0:01:25with a lots of cloud still
0:01:25 > 0:01:26and that gusty wind across
0:01:26 > 0:01:28eastern Scotland and north-east England.
0:01:28 > 0:01:29Still pretty windy on Tuesday,
0:01:29 > 0:01:32that south-easterly coming in off the continent,
0:01:32 > 0:01:34but we've got a front trying to push in off the Atlantic
0:01:34 > 0:01:36and that will make some headway
0:01:36 > 0:01:38into the far south-west of England,
0:01:38 > 0:01:39maybe the far south-west of Wales,
0:01:39 > 0:01:41so some patchy rain here eventually.
0:01:41 > 0:01:43Most other places will be dry,
0:01:43 > 0:01:44again, hopefully,
0:01:44 > 0:01:46some sunshine will help the feel of things,
0:01:46 > 0:01:47but still that chilly wind
0:01:47 > 0:01:49across the more northern and eastern areas.
0:01:49 > 0:01:51Now, by Wednesday, that front
0:01:51 > 0:01:53will have staggered some way inland,
0:01:53 > 0:01:55its exact position a little bit uncertain,
0:01:55 > 0:01:57so don't take the positioning
0:01:57 > 0:01:59of the rain too literally.
0:01:59 > 0:02:00There will be some patchy rain around.
0:02:00 > 0:02:02The winds won't be as strong
0:02:02 > 0:02:03and they're starting to come up
0:02:03 > 0:02:05from the south or even the south-west again,
0:02:05 > 0:02:07a milder direction, in fact,
0:02:07 > 0:02:08by Wednesday, many of us
0:02:08 > 0:02:10will be in double figures.
0:02:10 > 0:02:12By Thursday, it looks as if
0:02:12 > 0:02:13most of the action, most of any wind
0:02:13 > 0:02:15and rain will be across
0:02:15 > 0:02:16the far north of Scotland.
0:02:16 > 0:02:18For the rest of us, much lighter winds
0:02:18 > 0:02:20and again it'll feel pretty pleasant
0:02:20 > 0:02:21with temperatures widely up
0:02:21 > 0:02:23into double figures once more.
0:02:23 > 0:02:24Here's the big picture then,
0:02:24 > 0:02:26with that front stranded across the north,
0:02:26 > 0:02:27it's tied in with an area
0:02:27 > 0:02:29of low pressure out in the Atlantic
0:02:29 > 0:02:31which is trying to come in
0:02:31 > 0:02:33on a somewhat re-invigorated jet stream.
0:02:33 > 0:02:36The jet stream has been pretty limp through this winter.
0:02:36 > 0:02:38It's been deflected away from our shores which
0:02:38 > 0:02:41has meant that much of the winter has been on the dry side.
0:02:41 > 0:02:44But the jet, for a time at least, later on in the week,
0:02:44 > 0:02:48will be reinvigorated as it oscillates its way towards us.
0:02:48 > 0:02:49How long will that last?
0:02:49 > 0:02:51How long will the more unsettled spell continued?
0:02:51 > 0:02:55Well, some clues perhaps lie down in the tropics.
0:02:55 > 0:03:00There's known to be a link between pulses of energy in the atmosphere,
0:03:00 > 0:03:03which move the way west to east across the tropics
0:03:03 > 0:03:07and the behaviour of our jet stream closer to home and it does look
0:03:07 > 0:03:11as if one such pulse of energy across the tropics
0:03:11 > 0:03:15is actually likely to stop the jet stream from livening up again.
0:03:15 > 0:03:18It looks as if that jet could well be blocked once more,
0:03:18 > 0:03:21so any wetter spells could be quite brief
0:03:21 > 0:03:23and a predominantly dry theme
0:03:23 > 0:03:26continues into the latter part of this month.
0:03:26 > 0:03:28I'll give you more details
0:03:28 > 0:03:29on that tomorrow.
