0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello, in a moment I'll take you somewhere which is about to

0:00:04 > 0:00:06get more rain than perhaps it can handle.

0:00:06 > 0:00:08Now, some of us had a wet day on Thursday,

0:00:08 > 0:00:10there were showers in Scotland.

0:00:10 > 0:00:12Here's a view though of a rainbow looking out over Perth.

0:00:12 > 0:00:15Now, parts of south-west Scotland have been wetter than normal

0:00:15 > 0:00:18so far in February. But for the bulk of the UK,

0:00:18 > 0:00:20it has been another rather dry month in a dry winter.

0:00:20 > 0:00:24And in fact the Met Office says with average rainfall for the rest

0:00:24 > 0:00:27of February, winter could well end up for England and Wales in

0:00:27 > 0:00:29the top-10 driest in on record.

0:00:29 > 0:00:30For Northern Ireland, it could end up

0:00:30 > 0:00:34with one of the top-five driest winters on record.

0:00:34 > 0:00:37Northern Ireland last winter had its wettest winter on record,

0:00:37 > 0:00:40that is an incredible transformation.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43It just shows how our weather goes from one extreme to another.

0:00:43 > 0:00:46And how about another incredible transformation?

0:00:46 > 0:00:49Here is a view of Friday's weather in California.

0:00:49 > 0:00:52As another really wet weather system piles in,

0:00:52 > 0:00:54another in a really wet winter.

0:00:54 > 0:00:58Los Angeles could end up with 50 to 100 millimetres of rain

0:00:58 > 0:00:59in a 12-hour period,

0:00:59 > 0:01:02there are flash-flood watches in effect.

0:01:02 > 0:01:05All the rain in California so far this winter's made

0:01:05 > 0:01:07a significant dent in the drought.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10Though there are still areas in drought.

0:01:10 > 0:01:12North-east USA, Eastern Canada have seen winter storm after

0:01:12 > 0:01:15winter storm this week, another one pulling away on Friday

0:01:15 > 0:01:19and these areas of low pressure are tracking across the Atlantic,

0:01:19 > 0:01:21but just missing us to the north.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23We're getting some weather fronts just draping down from them.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26Looks like some of these low-pressure systems will get closer

0:01:26 > 0:01:29to us next week as our weather turns more active

0:01:29 > 0:01:31as we'll see in a moment.

0:01:31 > 0:01:33Now, this is Friday's weather.

0:01:33 > 0:01:35Bit of damp, drizzly weather from south-east England

0:01:35 > 0:01:36through the Midlands,

0:01:36 > 0:01:39north-west England, into the west of Scotland to begin with.

0:01:39 > 0:01:40That tending to ease,

0:01:40 > 0:01:42most of us with a dry afternoon, still mild.

0:01:42 > 0:01:45Some outbreaks of rain reaching towards the west of Wales

0:01:45 > 0:01:47and the far south-west of England at the end of the day.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50Looks quite wet in Western Scotland as Saturday begins.

0:01:50 > 0:01:51Windier, too.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54This weather system just starting to push its way southwards

0:01:54 > 0:01:56late Saturday into Sunday.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58Not much rain left on it across southern parts before it

0:01:58 > 0:02:00clears away.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03Breezier for us all for part two of the weekend on Sunday

0:02:03 > 0:02:04and another wet weather system

0:02:04 > 0:02:07approaching north-west Scotland here.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10Elsewhere though, it will be mainly dry, variable clouds, sunny spells.

0:02:10 > 0:02:11It's still mild.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13Now, on Monday,

0:02:13 > 0:02:15again quite a bit of rain coming to parts of north-west Scotland,

0:02:15 > 0:02:18especially to the hills, breezy across-the-board,

0:02:18 > 0:02:20but even milder on Monday.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23Especially down the eastern side of the UK.

0:02:23 > 0:02:27Why? Because we're in between a warm front and a cold front.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29This is called the warm sector and this is where we get this

0:02:29 > 0:02:30very mild air.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33It doesn't necessarily come with a huge amount of sunshine and

0:02:33 > 0:02:35maybe drizzly on some western hills,

0:02:35 > 0:02:39but there's certainly a mild feel to things as we start the week.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42And that's why maybe across some spots in the east

0:02:42 > 0:02:44we could get to 16 or 17 Celsius.

0:02:44 > 0:02:47But behind a warm front, there follows a cold front.

0:02:47 > 0:02:49Temperatures will eventually come down.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51They may rise again as the week goes on,

0:02:51 > 0:02:54then come down again as another cold front moves through.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56This is all part and parcel of our active weather.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59As the jet stream just nudges a little bit further south across us,

0:02:59 > 0:03:02taking more of these weather systems right across us.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05And so our weather turns more unsettled and more active.

0:03:05 > 0:03:09And there are bigger variations between mild days and colder days.

0:03:09 > 0:03:10So spells of rain in the forecast,

0:03:10 > 0:03:13maybe making a bit of a dent in our dry winter so far.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16Windier weather for us all, with gales in places.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19And colder, certainly compared with the start of the week.

0:03:19 > 0:03:21And behind cold fronts, you may see a frost,

0:03:21 > 0:03:24you may get some wintry showers across northern hills.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27Winter will eventually lose the war of course to spring,

0:03:27 > 0:03:30but clearly there are still some battles still to be had.
