0:00:02 > 0:00:03Spring is just around the corner,
0:00:03 > 0:00:07but when I say that, I mean meteorological spring,
0:00:07 > 0:00:10which starts on March 1st,
0:00:10 > 0:00:14so we've just got a few days of "winter" left.
0:00:14 > 0:00:15And how's it looking?
0:00:15 > 0:00:18Well, this weekend, relatively mild but very changeable.
0:00:18 > 0:00:21But then into March, things will cool off a little bit
0:00:21 > 0:00:24and the weather will remain very, very changeable.
0:00:24 > 0:00:27So as far as Saturday and Sunday's concerned,
0:00:27 > 0:00:30we'll see weather fronts pushing through the UK.
0:00:30 > 0:00:31Here's a look at Saturday.
0:00:31 > 0:00:33Fronts moving through, extensive cloud,
0:00:33 > 0:00:35outbreaks of rain - most of the rain
0:00:35 > 0:00:37will be across western areas of the UK,
0:00:37 > 0:00:39and the wind's going to be picking up as well.
0:00:39 > 0:00:43But these are mild southwesterlies, so we're talking about temperatures
0:00:43 > 0:00:45into double figures across most of the UK.
0:00:45 > 0:00:47And the most amount of rainfall is expected to fall
0:00:47 > 0:00:50across the north-west of England, so Cumbria, Lancashire,
0:00:50 > 0:00:53places like that. The rain will wax and wane through the weekend,
0:00:53 > 0:00:56particularly in between weather fronts it'll dry out,
0:00:56 > 0:01:00but I think overall it's this portion of the UK here
0:01:00 > 0:01:01that will be getting most of the rainfall.
0:01:01 > 0:01:05So I think a fairly chilly start to Sunday, and dry,
0:01:05 > 0:01:09with some sunshine across many central, eastern and southern areas,
0:01:09 > 0:01:12but very quickly, linked to this low pressure here,
0:01:12 > 0:01:14weather fronts will come zooming in.
0:01:14 > 0:01:17So increasing winds, even gale-force winds a little bit later on,
0:01:17 > 0:01:20particularly around these southwestern approaches
0:01:20 > 0:01:22around the Welsh coast. Irish Sea very windy
0:01:22 > 0:01:25on the coastline, on the hills, and we've got those outbreaks of rain.
0:01:25 > 0:01:29So the heaviest of the rain again across these north-western areas
0:01:29 > 0:01:31whereas the further east you are on Sunday
0:01:31 > 0:01:33and the further south you are on Sunday,
0:01:33 > 0:01:35the better the weather will be.
0:01:35 > 0:01:38So a very breezy Sunday, looks like it's going to be
0:01:38 > 0:01:40a very breezy and changeable Monday as well.
0:01:40 > 0:01:43With low pressure sitting on top of us, a very unsettled day.
0:01:43 > 0:01:46I think it's going to be one of those days where you have
0:01:46 > 0:01:48bright sunshine and dark cloud,
0:01:48 > 0:01:51maybe some thunder and lightning - all sorts.
0:01:51 > 0:01:52So quite a dramatic day, I think,
0:01:52 > 0:01:54as far as the look of the sky is concerned.
0:01:54 > 0:01:56We'll see scenes like this
0:01:56 > 0:01:58and then we'll see some rainbows, a crack of thunder,
0:01:58 > 0:02:01and perhaps even some hail at times as well.
0:02:01 > 0:02:03So they're kind of April showers,
0:02:03 > 0:02:06but a lot, lot earlier - still in February.
0:02:06 > 0:02:09Now, as far as the second half of the week's concerned,
0:02:09 > 0:02:12this big low is hanging around. It's not moving anywhere.
0:02:12 > 0:02:16Does look as though, by the time we get to Tuesday,
0:02:16 > 0:02:18those showers will start to ease.
0:02:18 > 0:02:20So there'll be more of them on Monday,
0:02:20 > 0:02:22but still a few left over for sure on Tuesday.
0:02:22 > 0:02:26And then we're into Wednesday - remember, March 1st,
0:02:26 > 0:02:29the first day of meteorological spring.
0:02:29 > 0:02:31And the reason why we pick March 1st
0:02:31 > 0:02:33is we like to work in blocks of three
0:02:33 > 0:02:35when we average out the seasons.
0:02:35 > 0:02:38So March, April, May is spring.
0:02:38 > 0:02:41So here it is - the 1st of March,
0:02:41 > 0:02:44the first day of meteorological spring.
0:02:44 > 0:02:46Quite a bit of sunshine around across central and eastern areas
0:02:46 > 0:02:49but we have got yet more weather fronts pushing our way,
0:02:49 > 0:02:52so inevitably there will be some rain.
0:02:52 > 0:02:55Early March - now, look at this pattern in the jet stream.
0:02:55 > 0:02:58Typically, cold air is to the north of the jet stream,
0:02:58 > 0:03:00mild air is to the south.
0:03:00 > 0:03:03We're kind of going to be on the cold side of this jet stream
0:03:03 > 0:03:05and it's quite a powerful jet stream as well,
0:03:05 > 0:03:09and it could well be sending some pretty nasty areas of low pressure
0:03:09 > 0:03:11in our direction once more.
0:03:11 > 0:03:15Way too early to say just how windy or wet it's going to get,
0:03:15 > 0:03:17but I think suffice to say
0:03:17 > 0:03:20it is going to be an unsettled start to March.
0:03:20 > 0:03:23There'll be some rain around, there'll be some drier spells
0:03:23 > 0:03:25as well, but because we're on the colder side of the jet,
0:03:25 > 0:03:26there certainly will be
0:03:26 > 0:03:28some chilly weather about.
0:03:28 > 0:03:29Thanks for watching.
