0:00:01 > 0:00:03Hello there. In meteorology, we like to keep things simple,

0:00:03 > 0:00:07so winter runs from 1st December to the end of February

0:00:07 > 0:00:10and, that way, we can compare like with like from season to season.

0:00:10 > 0:00:12What about the season just gone?

0:00:12 > 0:00:14When you look at the average temperature,

0:00:14 > 0:00:17it was up a little bit across the board.

0:00:17 > 0:00:20When it's mild in winter, you'd expect it to be wet and windy,

0:00:20 > 0:00:24but it wasn't. Here's the winter rainfall map,

0:00:24 > 0:00:26and most places were a good deal drier than average,

0:00:26 > 0:00:30mainly because we had high pressure blocking weather systems

0:00:30 > 0:00:33from coming in from the Atlantic for much of the time.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35But we are going to see a fairly strong jet stream

0:00:35 > 0:00:38coming across the Atlantic Ocean.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40That will be impacting on our weather,

0:00:40 > 0:00:44but notice how it dives away towards the south of the UK,

0:00:44 > 0:00:46and in this big trough you'd expect

0:00:46 > 0:00:49a significant area of low pressure to develop,

0:00:49 > 0:00:51and that's what we'll see -

0:00:51 > 0:00:53very heavy snow is likely in the Alps this weekend.

0:00:53 > 0:00:56We end the week with a fair bit of rain

0:00:56 > 0:00:58across the southern half of the UK.

0:00:58 > 0:01:01That will work its way northwards.

0:01:01 > 0:01:03The southeast will dry up

0:01:03 > 0:01:05but the southwest will have outbreaks of rain,

0:01:05 > 0:01:08breezy too. Rain, too, in Northern Ireland.

0:01:08 > 0:01:09The best of any sunshine

0:01:09 > 0:01:12will be across central and northern Scotland,

0:01:12 > 0:01:14temperatures 6 or 7 degrees,

0:01:14 > 0:01:1611 or 12 in the London area.

0:01:16 > 0:01:20Into the weekend, and there will be rain at times.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23Some of that could be on the heavy side,

0:01:23 > 0:01:25there'll be a bit of a breeze,

0:01:25 > 0:01:28and it's not going to feel great, still a bit on the chilly side.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31Friday's rain continues its journey northwards,

0:01:31 > 0:01:33and at the start of the weekend,

0:01:33 > 0:01:35the isobars get closer together,

0:01:35 > 0:01:37so the winds will be picking up,

0:01:37 > 0:01:39the rain will be setting in.

0:01:39 > 0:01:42It'll be wet and windy in Northern Ireland.

0:01:42 > 0:01:44Some rain for the eastern side of England

0:01:44 > 0:01:47but the further south and west you go,

0:01:47 > 0:01:50it's more like scattered showers on the breeze.

0:01:50 > 0:01:518 or 9 degrees,

0:01:51 > 0:01:54maybe 11 in the south-eastern corner.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57By Sunday, the wettest weather

0:01:57 > 0:01:57is further south,

0:01:57 > 0:01:59moving its way eastwards.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04Drier further north but still with a few showers

0:02:04 > 0:02:06in western Scotland and Northern Ireland.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09As we go through Sunday night,

0:02:09 > 0:02:11that area of rain moves away

0:02:11 > 0:02:13and to start the new week,

0:02:13 > 0:02:15it looks like we'll see some rain

0:02:15 > 0:02:16in the southwest.

0:02:16 > 0:02:18Elsewhere, maybe a shower early on

0:02:18 > 0:02:21but a lot of dry and bright weather

0:02:21 > 0:02:22but cloud will increase

0:02:22 > 0:02:25and we'll see showers developing,

0:02:25 > 0:02:27maybe a little bit of rain in Scotland

0:02:27 > 0:02:29and Northern Ireland.

0:02:29 > 0:02:31Top temperatures - 8 or 9 degrees in

0:02:31 > 0:02:32Glasgow and Belfast,

0:02:32 > 0:02:3410 or 11 in Cardiff and London.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36Looking further ahead -

0:02:36 > 0:02:38the jet stream

0:02:38 > 0:02:40is there or thereabouts, and with

0:02:40 > 0:02:42that trough to the south of the UK,

0:02:42 > 0:02:43we are likely to see some rain

0:02:43 > 0:02:45developing in the southern half

0:02:45 > 0:02:47of the UK, but with this fairly flat

0:02:47 > 0:02:49wave in the jet stream,

0:02:49 > 0:02:51it'll be a westerly wind,

0:02:51 > 0:02:53keeping it not quite so chilly.

0:02:53 > 0:02:54Then the jet stream will move

0:02:54 > 0:02:56further north,

0:02:56 > 0:02:58taking that trough with it,

0:02:58 > 0:02:59and taking the rainfall with it.

0:02:59 > 0:03:01It dries up a little the south.

0:03:01 > 0:03:03Into next weekend,

0:03:03 > 0:03:05we see the jet stream becoming

0:03:05 > 0:03:07much more amplified.

0:03:07 > 0:03:09We are going to see some outbreaks

0:03:09 > 0:03:10of rain to go with that,

0:03:10 > 0:03:12but also some colder air

0:03:12 > 0:03:13coming down from the northwest.

0:03:13 > 0:03:15Expect temperatures to drop away.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17It is staying unsettled.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19It will be quite windy at times,

0:03:19 > 0:03:21with some outbreaks of rain,

0:03:21 > 0:03:23and also turning colder.

0:03:23 > 0:03:25That colder feel could last

0:03:25 > 0:03:26for quite some time.

0:03:32 > 0:03:33Oh, it's on.

0:03:36 > 0:03:37Let's go racing!
