0:00:02 > 0:00:03Hello. A very mild start to the week.

0:00:03 > 0:00:06A spring-like look and feel to things, especially in some sunshine.

0:00:06 > 0:00:09And in fact, with 16.6 Celsius,

0:00:09 > 0:00:12Monday was Northern Ireland's warmest day of the year so far.

0:00:12 > 0:00:15And on Tuesday, south-east England could see 18 Celsius or more

0:00:15 > 0:00:18for the UK's highest temperature of the year so far.

0:00:18 > 0:00:21But contrast those scenes with this.

0:00:21 > 0:00:25A house encased in ice on the shores of Lake Ontario in New York State

0:00:25 > 0:00:26after several days of arctic winds.

0:00:26 > 0:00:28And my gran used to say

0:00:28 > 0:00:30what they get in the USA eventually comes to the UK.

0:00:30 > 0:00:32We're not going to see this,

0:00:32 > 0:00:34but the weather in the north-east of the USA

0:00:34 > 0:00:37will impact our weather pattern later this week,

0:00:37 > 0:00:39as I'll show you in a moment.

0:00:39 > 0:00:41But first to our weather for Tuesday.

0:00:41 > 0:00:43High pressure giving us fine conditions,

0:00:43 > 0:00:45just being squeezed a little bit to the south,

0:00:45 > 0:00:46allowing a weak weather front

0:00:46 > 0:00:49to take some patchy rain through parts of northern England

0:00:49 > 0:00:50and Wales to begin the day.

0:00:50 > 0:00:52Following that, brighter skies for Scotland.

0:00:52 > 0:00:54Plenty of showers in the far north,

0:00:54 > 0:00:57with strong winds gusting in excess of 70mph,

0:00:57 > 0:00:59giving an impact on travel here.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02Central and eastern parts of England seeing the best of the sunshine.

0:01:02 > 0:01:04And again, that possibility of 18 Celsius or more

0:01:04 > 0:01:06in south-east England.

0:01:06 > 0:01:07Now, as we go into Wednesday,

0:01:07 > 0:01:11high pressure is allowed to bulge back northwards again,

0:01:11 > 0:01:12so a lot of dry weather.

0:01:12 > 0:01:14Rather cloudy, though, in southern England, South Wales,

0:01:14 > 0:01:16across Northern Ireland,

0:01:16 > 0:01:18and northern Scotland, with some outbreaks of rain coming back.

0:01:18 > 0:01:20Looks like the lion's share of the sunshine

0:01:20 > 0:01:22will be in northern and eastern England on Wednesday.

0:01:22 > 0:01:25On Thursday, many of us starting dry.

0:01:25 > 0:01:27A weather front weakening as it pushes southwards.

0:01:27 > 0:01:29But there are stronger weather fronts

0:01:29 > 0:01:30and weather systems to come

0:01:30 > 0:01:32as our weather turns more active at the end of the week

0:01:32 > 0:01:33and for the weekend.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36Why? Well, we go back to what's going on in the USA.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38And this is the big picture for Tuesday.

0:01:38 > 0:01:39This is a nor'easter.

0:01:39 > 0:01:42It's a storm that drags loads of moisture in to cold air

0:01:42 > 0:01:44in place in the north-east of the USA,

0:01:44 > 0:01:47producing copious snow, up to 20 inches in New York,

0:01:47 > 0:01:50with a blizzard warning in force for New York City.

0:01:50 > 0:01:52And clearly, there's a load of cold air in place

0:01:52 > 0:01:54across Canada and the USA.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56Quite a tight thermal gradient,

0:01:56 > 0:01:59that's the change of temperature over a distance,

0:01:59 > 0:02:00not just at the surface,

0:02:00 > 0:02:02but higher in the atmosphere at jet stream level.

0:02:02 > 0:02:05And the jet stream thrives off that thermal gradient.

0:02:05 > 0:02:08And as that comes out of North America and across the Atlantic

0:02:08 > 0:02:11going through this week, the jet stream gets stronger,

0:02:11 > 0:02:13takes a more direct track towards the UK,

0:02:13 > 0:02:16taking weather systems our way, turning things cooler as well.

0:02:16 > 0:02:18Not going to see a huge amount of snow,

0:02:18 > 0:02:21but I think snow is likely, again, in the Scottish hills for a time.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23But what most of us will notice

0:02:23 > 0:02:25is weather systems coming right across the UK,

0:02:25 > 0:02:27the end of the week and into the weekend,

0:02:27 > 0:02:30with stronger winds, lower temperatures

0:02:30 > 0:02:32and, of course with these, wetter weather for many of us.

0:02:32 > 0:02:33So, here's Friday.

0:02:33 > 0:02:37The first of these more powerful systems on the stronger jet stream

0:02:37 > 0:02:39diving south-eastwards across the UK,

0:02:39 > 0:02:41last to get into south-east England.

0:02:41 > 0:02:43Notice those temperatures coming down.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46And then a windy picture at the start of the weekend.

0:02:46 > 0:02:50If you're not getting rain, you will get some showers at some stage.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53But then going into the start of next week, it looks like

0:02:53 > 0:02:57although there are weather systems still coming our way,

0:02:57 > 0:02:58they may not be as powerful

0:02:58 > 0:03:00and there will be bigger gaps developing

0:03:00 > 0:03:02in-between these weather systems,

0:03:02 > 0:03:04so although there will be spells of wind and rain,

0:03:04 > 0:03:07particularly across northern parts of the UK,

0:03:07 > 0:03:09next week, there'll be drier, brighter spells

0:03:09 > 0:03:11that may last a bit longer in-between.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13With the drier, brighter spells,

0:03:13 > 0:03:15it could turn quite chilly, with a touch of frost.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17But overall, although temperatures are up and down,

0:03:17 > 0:03:19they are looking quite average.

0:03:19 > 0:03:21So, there you are.

0:03:21 > 0:03:23A hint that what's happening in the USA

0:03:23 > 0:03:26may just have an impact on our weather for a time.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28Maybe my gran was onto something after all.
