0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello. If you saw the news earlier this week you will have

0:00:04 > 0:00:07seen all of that snow across the northeast of the United States

0:00:07 > 0:00:09which then pushed its way into Eastern Canada.

0:00:09 > 0:00:11That was Storm Stella,

0:00:11 > 0:00:13now moving away from North America.

0:00:13 > 0:00:15It's heading across the Atlantic,

0:00:15 > 0:00:16heading our way but it's not going to be

0:00:16 > 0:00:18anything like it was in North America,

0:00:18 > 0:00:19it's mostly going to be rain,

0:00:19 > 0:00:22and it's being pushed by this fairly flat

0:00:22 > 0:00:24jet stream. It's a zonal flow, that's

0:00:24 > 0:00:26what we call it when it's a fairly flat jet.

0:00:26 > 0:00:28As it moves into the UK it's going to be

0:00:28 > 0:00:30a spell of wind and rain.

0:00:30 > 0:00:31There will be some snow

0:00:31 > 0:00:33but it's really only over the higher ground

0:00:33 > 0:00:35in Scotland. A bit of rain in the northwest.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37The further south you are, after a

0:00:37 > 0:00:38bright start it'll tend to cloud over

0:00:38 > 0:00:40into the afternoon but it should stay dry.

0:00:40 > 0:00:4212 or 13 in the London area,

0:00:42 > 0:00:447s, 8s and 9s across Scotland.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46Through Friday evening there's

0:00:46 > 0:00:47plenty more rain to be had in the

0:00:47 > 0:00:48northwest of the UK.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51Some gets across to the eastern side

0:00:51 > 0:00:52but it shouldn't be too heavy

0:00:52 > 0:00:55not too persistent, but some rain nonetheless.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57As we head towards dawn on Saturday

0:00:57 > 0:00:59it's 8 or 9 degrees quite widely,

0:00:59 > 0:01:01but with the clearer skies across

0:01:01 > 0:01:03the Northern Isles we could go down to

0:01:03 > 0:01:04around about freezing.

0:01:04 > 0:01:06Through Saturday we've still got this

0:01:06 > 0:01:08flow coming out of the Atlantic and still

0:01:08 > 0:01:10a fair number of isobars on the chart

0:01:10 > 0:01:13so it's going to be a windy weekend for many,

0:01:13 > 0:01:15and that'll be a key feature of things

0:01:15 > 0:01:17across pretty much all parts.

0:01:17 > 0:01:18There will be some rain to be had

0:01:18 > 0:01:20but most of the rain on Saturday looks to be

0:01:20 > 0:01:22in the north and west of the UK.

0:01:22 > 0:01:23Some gets across the Pennines

0:01:23 > 0:01:25but not a great deal. Some parts of the

0:01:25 > 0:01:27southeast and northeast should stay dry.

0:01:27 > 0:01:309 or 10 degrees in Scotland.

0:01:30 > 0:01:32Could go as high as 15, maybe 16

0:01:32 > 0:01:33in the southeast.

0:01:33 > 0:01:35As we head through Saturday evening

0:01:35 > 0:01:37and on to Sunday, still weather fronts

0:01:37 > 0:01:38coming in from the Atlantic.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40This broad warm sector Saturday night

0:01:40 > 0:01:42into Sunday should keep temperatures up a bit

0:01:42 > 0:01:44but it's still going to be very windy out there,

0:01:44 > 0:01:46lots of isobars on the chart.

0:01:46 > 0:01:48Again, on Sunday, a windy day and

0:01:48 > 0:01:49there'll be some rain to be had

0:01:49 > 0:01:51but again it's mainly

0:01:51 > 0:01:53in the western side of the UK will see

0:01:53 > 0:01:54the heaviest of the rainfall.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56Head further east

0:01:56 > 0:01:57and the rain is light and patchy.

0:01:57 > 0:01:59Some places may well stay dry.

0:01:59 > 0:02:01There should be a few breaks in that cloud,

0:02:01 > 0:02:03particularly in the east of the Pennines.

0:02:03 > 0:02:05On to Monday and a weak weather front just

0:02:05 > 0:02:06drapes its way across

0:02:06 > 0:02:08southern-most counties of England,

0:02:08 > 0:02:10so it will be a cloudy affair here with some

0:02:10 > 0:02:12outbreaks of rain and a bit of a breeze as well.

0:02:12 > 0:02:15Further north, a scattering of showers on and off

0:02:15 > 0:02:17but some spells of sunshine as well

0:02:17 > 0:02:19and maybe a bit more of persistent rain

0:02:19 > 0:02:21creeping its way into the far northwest

0:02:21 > 0:02:24later in the day. As we head into Tuesday,

0:02:24 > 0:02:26another weak weather front drifting its way

0:02:26 > 0:02:27in from the Atlantic.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29A fair number of isobars on the chart and that'll keep

0:02:29 > 0:02:30things quite breezy.

0:02:30 > 0:02:32That weather front will bring some rain

0:02:32 > 0:02:34with it but it's all drifting its way

0:02:34 > 0:02:36ever eastwards, followed by sunny spells

0:02:36 > 0:02:38and a scattering of showers, those temperatures

0:02:38 > 0:02:40coming down, only single figures for many.

0:02:40 > 0:02:44We looked at the jet stream earlier on, it was

0:02:44 > 0:02:46quite flat coming out across the Atlantic

0:02:46 > 0:02:48but as we looked towards the latter parts

0:02:48 > 0:02:50of next week it looks like it'll be digging

0:02:50 > 0:02:52its way south then heading back north.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54This is what we call a meridional pattern.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56High pressure may develop

0:02:56 > 0:02:57across the UK

0:02:57 > 0:02:59which will help settle things down.

0:02:59 > 0:03:01The jet stream is driven by temperature

0:03:01 > 0:03:03contrasts between different air masses,

0:03:03 > 0:03:06the colder Polar air to the north and

0:03:06 > 0:03:08the much warmer tropical air to the south.

0:03:08 > 0:03:10Just a hint that the southeast might be

0:03:10 > 0:03:11on the warm side of the jet

0:03:11 > 0:03:13whereas the bulk of the UK later next week

0:03:13 > 0:03:15looks like it will be on the cold side.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18But at least it looks that bit drier, with high pressure in charge,

0:03:18 > 0:03:20and there should be some sunshine as well.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22But with the sunshine by daytime it means we are looking at some

0:03:22 > 0:03:25rather chilly nights by the end of next week.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28Gardeners take note cos the frost could well be quite widespread.
