0:00:02 > 0:00:06It's not unusual to have snow in April, we had it last year

0:00:06 > 0:00:10but given how mild March was it will be a shock to the system.

0:00:10 > 0:00:12Through April we've seen a general

0:00:12 > 0:00:14downward trend in the temperatures.

0:00:14 > 0:00:16The end of the first week saw the

0:00:16 > 0:00:18temperatures soaring to the mid-20s.

0:00:18 > 0:00:22But the line of temperature by day

0:00:22 > 0:00:25has started to sink southwards,

0:00:25 > 0:00:27Cambridge being an example.

0:00:27 > 0:00:29However at this time of year given

0:00:29 > 0:00:31the sun is increasing in

0:00:31 > 0:00:33strength you would expect the

0:00:33 > 0:00:34temperature to be rising

0:00:34 > 0:00:36through April but it's going to fall

0:00:36 > 0:00:37further for the last week of

0:00:37 > 0:00:40April and even into the start of May.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43This weekend doesn't look too cold.

0:00:43 > 0:00:45It should be mostly dry, some sunny spells.

0:00:45 > 0:00:47There will be a touch of ground frost by night but it's not

0:00:47 > 0:00:49going to be as cold as it will be next week.

0:00:49 > 0:00:51The ground frost comes behind this

0:00:51 > 0:00:52weak weather front so

0:00:52 > 0:00:54a little chilly in the north but

0:00:54 > 0:00:55plenty of sunshine on Saturday morning.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57Some wintry showers across Scotland.

0:00:57 > 0:01:00Elsewhere a lot of cloud, particularly Northern Ireland

0:01:00 > 0:01:02and the south and the east but there

0:01:02 > 0:01:03will be some good spells of

0:01:03 > 0:01:06sunshine and temperatures into the mid-teens.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09Not sunshine to the north of that front, it's colder air.

0:01:09 > 0:01:10We keep the status quo

0:01:10 > 0:01:12with the high pressure and settled

0:01:12 > 0:01:14conditions on Sunday. A chilly start for

0:01:14 > 0:01:16the marathon runners and spectators.

0:01:16 > 0:01:19And then some sunshine comes through.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21Towards the north of Scotland we're starting to see

0:01:21 > 0:01:23a developing area of low pressure.

0:01:23 > 0:01:25We've been keeping our eye on it

0:01:25 > 0:01:26most of the week and it still

0:01:26 > 0:01:30has potential to bring rain to the far north of Scotland and gales,

0:01:30 > 0:01:32if not severe gales.

0:01:32 > 0:01:35But most of us have a nice day on Sunday.

0:01:35 > 0:01:36As that low pressure moves out to

0:01:36 > 0:01:38Scandinavia and the cold front

0:01:38 > 0:01:40sinks southward that we allow this

0:01:40 > 0:01:44cold Arctic air to blast southwards

0:01:44 > 0:01:46right across the UK.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49With it some big wintry showers,

0:01:49 > 0:01:53hail, thunder, lightening and snow.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55Sleet and snow even at lower levels

0:01:55 > 0:01:56over the coming few days into

0:01:56 > 0:01:58the early part of the new week.

0:01:58 > 0:01:59Given the strength

0:01:59 > 0:02:02of the wind it will feel bitterly cold.

0:02:02 > 0:02:03Monday sees that

0:02:03 > 0:02:06cold weather front sinking south

0:02:06 > 0:02:07so we're just about hang on to the

0:02:07 > 0:02:09temperatures in the teens in

0:02:09 > 0:02:10southern areas but it

0:02:10 > 0:02:12will feel significantly colder further

0:02:12 > 0:02:14north with those showers coming through thick and fast even

0:02:14 > 0:02:18at lower levels so temperatures will drop

0:02:18 > 0:02:20with the snow showers and in those brisk northerly winds.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22Which continue into Tuesday,

0:02:22 > 0:02:23plenty more showers

0:02:23 > 0:02:25with us then but the cold air by

0:02:25 > 0:02:26that stage has reached the

0:02:26 > 0:02:28south coast so you can see wintry

0:02:28 > 0:02:29weather anywhere.

0:02:29 > 0:02:30Unlikely to lie at

0:02:30 > 0:02:33low levels but we could see a dusting

0:02:33 > 0:02:34further north.

0:02:34 > 0:02:35That cold air is

0:02:35 > 0:02:37with us by Tuesday, into Wednesday

0:02:37 > 0:02:39it's showing

0:02:39 > 0:02:40signs later in the week

0:02:40 > 0:02:42that we're getting milder air pushing in

0:02:42 > 0:02:44off the Atlantic.

0:02:44 > 0:02:45It's likely we will

0:02:45 > 0:02:47see that colder air being cut off

0:02:47 > 0:02:49but at the same time as the high pressure

0:02:49 > 0:02:51relinquishes its grip across

0:02:51 > 0:02:52the UK and the other low pressure

0:02:52 > 0:02:54and the northerly winds are

0:02:54 > 0:02:56taken further east, we could then

0:02:56 > 0:02:57see another low pressure

0:02:57 > 0:02:59coming into the north as the jet

0:02:59 > 0:03:01stream buckles and it pushes up

0:03:01 > 0:03:03some milder air across the UK.

0:03:03 > 0:03:07But before that happens we are at risk of significant frost by

0:03:07 > 0:03:13night so farmers and growers beware and some significant showers by day.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17It really is a very April-y looking picture.

0:03:17 > 0:03:18With the showers

0:03:18 > 0:03:20for the first part of the week,

0:03:20 > 0:03:21that chilly wind

0:03:21 > 0:03:23and wintry showers and the frost risk.

0:03:23 > 0:03:25But by the end of the week we'll

0:03:25 > 0:03:26start to see things warming

0:03:26 > 0:03:28just a little but at that stage the

0:03:28 > 0:03:29cold air's heading to Europe.
