0:00:02 > 0:00:05Well, it looks like the week ahead is going to bring a resurgence

0:00:05 > 0:00:09of cold, wintry weather. Just to remind you that winter

0:00:09 > 0:00:13was not that long ago but, in the short term, the rest of the weekend,

0:00:13 > 0:00:16no sign of any cold weather. It's actually not looking bad at all.

0:00:16 > 0:00:18There'll be some sunshine around

0:00:18 > 0:00:20but the mornings will be on the nippy side.

0:00:20 > 0:00:22Now, it's settled right now because we have an area

0:00:22 > 0:00:26of high pressure over us, and any big changes that are heading

0:00:26 > 0:00:29our way are still way towards the north of us.

0:00:29 > 0:00:31So, Sunday starts off on a calm note.

0:00:31 > 0:00:33There will be some sunshine around,

0:00:33 > 0:00:35maybe even some pockets of frost, if you're up very early.

0:00:35 > 0:00:38And the weather's not looking bad at all across southern areas,

0:00:38 > 0:00:40especially for the London Marathon. Quite a fresh run.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43By the afternoon, temperatures might get up to 15 or 16 but,

0:00:43 > 0:00:45on balance, fresh start.

0:00:45 > 0:00:48Now, the changes are already starting to take place

0:00:48 > 0:00:51in the afternoon on Sunday across northern parts of the UK/Scotland.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53Now, this area of low pressure

0:00:53 > 0:00:55is going to be responsible for opening

0:00:55 > 0:00:56the doors to a stream

0:00:56 > 0:00:58of colder air coming in from the northern climes

0:00:58 > 0:01:01so, already, early on Monday,

0:01:01 > 0:01:02we'll see this weather front here,

0:01:02 > 0:01:04let's call it a cold front,

0:01:04 > 0:01:07it's quite a complicated meteorological mess here but,

0:01:07 > 0:01:10essentially, what's happening is we're seeing

0:01:10 > 0:01:11a stream of colder air

0:01:11 > 0:01:14coming in from the north, and wintry showers

0:01:14 > 0:01:16will start to fall across the hills of Scotland.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18Look how big the contrast is

0:01:18 > 0:01:20between the north and the south.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23Then, through the course of Monday into Tuesday,

0:01:23 > 0:01:25that cold front will sweep into the continent,

0:01:25 > 0:01:28and then we start to see that northerly setting in.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31A true, cold northerly wind. Now, how cold is it going to get?

0:01:31 > 0:01:33The important thing to remember is,

0:01:33 > 0:01:34at this time of the year,

0:01:34 > 0:01:36the sun is incredibly powerful.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38So, that means those temperatures

0:01:38 > 0:01:39aren't really going to dip that low.

0:01:39 > 0:01:41We're not expecting sub-zero values

0:01:41 > 0:01:44or anything like that. It's just going to feel cold

0:01:44 > 0:01:45in the wind but those temperatures

0:01:45 > 0:01:47are still going to be pretty low for the time of the year.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50We're talking about maybe six degrees across Scotland and barely

0:01:50 > 0:01:52getting into double figures across southern areas.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55And when we get the cold air and the strong sunshine,

0:01:55 > 0:01:56we see big storm clouds building.

0:01:56 > 0:01:59Some of them will bring hail almost anywhere in the UK.

0:01:59 > 0:02:01And there'll be some snow around as well.

0:02:01 > 0:02:02Mostly across the hills,

0:02:02 > 0:02:05and there is a possibility of that snow settling as well.

0:02:05 > 0:02:08Then, overnight, when the skies clear, we'll probably see

0:02:08 > 0:02:10some frost forming as well.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13So I think a good two or three days of a proper chill on the way.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16Wednesday's going to be the last day when we see those wintry

0:02:16 > 0:02:19showers with hail, maybe some thunder,

0:02:19 > 0:02:21but also plenty of sunshine around as well.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23So, that's Wednesday's weather forecast.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26Those temperatures still into single figures across many areas,

0:02:26 > 0:02:30maybe just about touching double figures across the far south,

0:02:30 > 0:02:31and, in fact, by the time

0:02:31 > 0:02:33we get to Wednesday, look how far south

0:02:33 > 0:02:36this colder air stream will have reached.

0:02:36 > 0:02:38We're talking about the north coast of Spain here

0:02:38 > 0:02:41so this is chilly air that will have originated from the Arctic.

0:02:41 > 0:02:43By the time we get to Thursday,

0:02:43 > 0:02:45that's when the change happens.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47Rather than weather systems coming in from the north,

0:02:47 > 0:02:50we'll start to see weather fronts lining up in the Atlantic

0:02:50 > 0:02:52here and moving from the west.

0:02:52 > 0:02:53Now this here is much milder air

0:02:53 > 0:02:56so, essentially, what's going to happen,

0:02:56 > 0:02:59the colder air stream from the north is going to be cut off

0:02:59 > 0:03:02and we'll start to see weather systems coming in from the west.

0:03:02 > 0:03:03So, Thursday onwards,

0:03:03 > 0:03:05that colder air stream

0:03:05 > 0:03:07should be abating and we'll start to see

0:03:07 > 0:03:10the milder air coming in during the course of

0:03:10 > 0:03:12Friday and the weekend.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15And, eventually, those temperatures will start to climb to normal.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17And, then, beyond next weekend, it looks as though

0:03:17 > 0:03:19things could turn a little more unsettled.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22But, in the short term, the week ahead, certainly a little

0:03:22 > 0:03:24dose of winter across northern hills especially

0:03:24 > 0:03:26and then that frost risk.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28We have to wrap up warmly. That's it.
