0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello, a familiar cry in recent weeks has been -

0:00:04 > 0:00:07"Well, we really need some rain." Well, it was the turn of a

0:00:07 > 0:00:10large swathe of England to get some much-needed rain

0:00:10 > 0:00:14during Wednesday. In fact, for some it rained all-day long.

0:00:14 > 0:00:17I think some people might have thought, "OK, enough now."

0:00:17 > 0:00:21And it kept on coming. But it really has made a difference.

0:00:21 > 0:00:24Some places have had more than half-a-month's worth of rain

0:00:24 > 0:00:28in 24 hours. But remember we talked about how dry April was

0:00:28 > 0:00:32and looked at some of the record dry locations, from Edinburgh

0:00:32 > 0:00:34and to London's Kew Gardens, which, in the whole of April

0:00:34 > 0:00:38had just a few millimetres of rain. So, in May so far,

0:00:38 > 0:00:42where some of us have seen a lot of rain, how has that changed?

0:00:42 > 0:00:45Do your own drum roll here. Kew Gardens - look at this.

0:00:45 > 0:00:4936mm up to 6pm on Wednesday, in the month so far. That's about

0:00:49 > 0:00:53three quarters of average. But the transformation hasn't taken

0:00:53 > 0:00:55place at the weather station at Edinburgh Gogarbank,

0:00:55 > 0:00:58with just 9mm of rain so far, that's just a fifth of the

0:00:58 > 0:01:02monthly average. So some places have had a transformation and

0:01:02 > 0:01:05thanks to this weather system across England.

0:01:05 > 0:01:09But there is more rain needed, particularly in parts of Scotland.

0:01:09 > 0:01:13And this is how it looks going from Wednesday into Thursday.

0:01:13 > 0:01:16Not a huge amount of rain in the forecast but there will be

0:01:16 > 0:01:19showers falling. But there will be a much fresher feel to proceedings

0:01:19 > 0:01:22as low pressure drags in some cooler, fresher air

0:01:22 > 0:01:25into the UK. I say cooler - where you had all of that rain

0:01:25 > 0:01:28during Wednesday, actually it will feel much warmer

0:01:28 > 0:01:31because there will be some sunshine. But it'll be fresher,

0:01:31 > 0:01:33that's the main thing, the humidity has gone down.

0:01:33 > 0:01:37Lots of sunshine to begin the day, then the showers get going,

0:01:37 > 0:01:40especially for Northern Ireland. There will be some in Scotland

0:01:40 > 0:01:43and a few popping up in England and Wales. As ever with showers,

0:01:43 > 0:01:45they are hit and miss. Catch one, though, could be heavy,

0:01:45 > 0:01:48thundery and there is a risk of hail too.

0:01:48 > 0:01:51Now, some spots in England may get a bit more rain as we go through

0:01:51 > 0:01:54Thursday night and into Friday, as this area of low pressure runs

0:01:54 > 0:01:58into the North Sea, as that pushes up the eastern side of the UK.

0:01:58 > 0:02:01Elsewhere, we are looking at sunshine, and showers get going

0:02:01 > 0:02:04again. You can see where low pressure is located, just to the

0:02:04 > 0:02:05north-west of Ireland here

0:02:05 > 0:02:08and it's around that we are seeing the instability,

0:02:08 > 0:02:10the showers getting going, and again some heavy and thundery ones.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13Now, the temperatures don't look up to much

0:02:13 > 0:02:16but when you are in some sunshine it will be quite pleasant,

0:02:16 > 0:02:18if you are in a shower, though, it will feel quite chilly.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20Now, this is the picture for the weekend - an area of

0:02:20 > 0:02:23low pressure is still very much close by

0:02:23 > 0:02:26and that is still the driving force for getting lots of showers.

0:02:26 > 0:02:31So, each day may start fine but then the cloud builds with the

0:02:31 > 0:02:33heating of the day and we get those showers breaking out.

0:02:33 > 0:02:36And again, there will be some heavy and thundery ones around too,

0:02:36 > 0:02:39they may merge, in some spots, to give a longer spell of rain.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42Now, on Sunday, those showers get going -

0:02:42 > 0:02:45there may not be too many down towards East Anglia

0:02:45 > 0:02:47and south-east England and again, with some sunshine,

0:02:47 > 0:02:49it will feel quite pleasant.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51Now, going into next week...

0:02:51 > 0:02:53Well, it's a bit of a to and fro between low pressure and

0:02:53 > 0:02:55high pressure.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58It looks like we're going to get both at some stage during the week.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00Low pressure, high pressure, then low pressure.

0:03:00 > 0:03:04So it is a changeable picture. When low pressure is close by

0:03:04 > 0:03:06there will be some showers, possibly heavy.

0:03:06 > 0:03:09But when the high pressure is dominant and even in between

0:03:09 > 0:03:11the showers, there will be some drier weather.

0:03:11 > 0:03:14Nothing extreme in terms of temperature. By day, fairly close

0:03:14 > 0:03:17to average, feeling pleasantly warm in some sunshine.

0:03:17 > 0:03:21The nights, though, at times, could still be quite chilly.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24And although there will be some rain at times, it's mainly

0:03:24 > 0:03:27in the form of showers. For more prolonged wet weather,

0:03:27 > 0:03:29in those parts of dry Scotland, the wait may go on.
