0:00:02 > 0:00:04The month of June is drawing to a close and my lasting memories
0:00:04 > 0:00:07of the month will be one of extremes.
0:00:07 > 0:00:09We started off after a pretty dry May
0:00:09 > 0:00:11on a wet note.
0:00:11 > 0:00:13In fact, Edinburgh saw just shy
0:00:13 > 0:00:14of a month's worth of rain
0:00:14 > 0:00:15in just a couple of days.
0:00:15 > 0:00:18Then we found some scorching summer sunshine,
0:00:18 > 0:00:20particularly across central
0:00:20 > 0:00:22and southern parts of England and Wales,
0:00:22 > 0:00:24temperatures in excess of 30 degrees
0:00:24 > 0:00:25and, in fact, the heat wave peaked
0:00:25 > 0:00:29just to the west of London with 35 Celsius,
0:00:29 > 0:00:32the hottest June day since 1976.
0:00:32 > 0:00:36But we close out the month with some extreme weather.
0:00:36 > 0:00:38Again, it looks as though the heavy rain
0:00:38 > 0:00:41set to return for all of us over the next few days
0:00:41 > 0:00:43and I'm sure when the June statistics come out,
0:00:43 > 0:00:45the rainfall totals will be fairly average
0:00:45 > 0:00:47right across the country,
0:00:47 > 0:00:49but in some places, well above average
0:00:49 > 0:00:52because this low pressure is going to sit with us
0:00:52 > 0:00:54for a couple of days
0:00:54 > 0:00:56and the front is not moving very far very fast.
0:00:56 > 0:00:58It will bring further spells of wet weather
0:00:58 > 0:01:01as it pushes its way steadily north and west,
0:01:01 > 0:01:02almost grinding to a halt
0:01:02 > 0:01:05across the Scottish Borders during Wednesday.
0:01:05 > 0:01:07So for Scotland and Northern Ireland,
0:01:07 > 0:01:08not too bad a day.
0:01:08 > 0:01:11Breezy and a little bit cool on the east coast,
0:01:11 > 0:01:13the best of the sunshine in the south and east,
0:01:13 > 0:01:15but that could trigger off a few sharp,
0:01:15 > 0:01:17possibly thundery downpours.
0:01:17 > 0:01:20Then as we move out of Wednesday night to Thursday,
0:01:20 > 0:01:22that front will start to drift its way
0:01:22 > 0:01:25north and west across Scotland and Northern Ireland.
0:01:25 > 0:01:27It's not going to be a particularly cold start
0:01:27 > 0:01:29to Thursday morning,
0:01:29 > 0:01:31but again we will see some heavy rainfall
0:01:31 > 0:01:34this time across Scotland and Northern Ireland.
0:01:34 > 0:01:36With tightly packed isobars here,
0:01:36 > 0:01:38we could see strong to gale force gusts of winds
0:01:38 > 0:01:41for a time through the Central Belt of Scotland
0:01:41 > 0:01:43and there'll be some relentless rain
0:01:43 > 0:01:44through much of the day.
0:01:44 > 0:01:47Funnelling, then, down through the Irish Sea
0:01:47 > 0:01:49across the Isle of Man and into north Wales.
0:01:49 > 0:01:52The best of the drier weather in the south-east corner
0:01:52 > 0:01:54with a little more shelter,
0:01:54 > 0:01:55highs of 20 degrees,
0:01:55 > 0:01:56but it'll feel quite cold
0:01:56 > 0:01:58further north under the rain.
0:01:58 > 0:02:00The frontal system then sinks its way south and east
0:02:00 > 0:02:02as we move into Friday.
0:02:02 > 0:02:05That means yet more rain still from that front
0:02:05 > 0:02:07and again across England and Wales
0:02:07 > 0:02:09and look at the wind direction, a northerly,
0:02:09 > 0:02:10so that is going to make it
0:02:10 > 0:02:12feel cool with the exception,
0:02:12 > 0:02:14perhaps, of a little more shelter
0:02:14 > 0:02:15in the Scottish mountains.
0:02:15 > 0:02:18With the foehn effect, we could see highs of 19.
0:02:18 > 0:02:19But as we move out of Friday
0:02:19 > 0:02:20to the start of the weekend,
0:02:20 > 0:02:22a brief lull in proceedings,
0:02:22 > 0:02:24another low waiting in the wings.
0:02:24 > 0:02:26That will bring some wet and windy weather eventually,
0:02:26 > 0:02:29but Saturday's not looking likely to be too bad.
0:02:29 > 0:02:32Yes, disappointing feel to the north-west,
0:02:32 > 0:02:35highest values of 22 in the south-east.
0:02:35 > 0:02:37That front sinks south and on Sunday,
0:02:37 > 0:02:40we're left with a breezier north-westerly
0:02:40 > 0:02:41or westerly wind direction
0:02:41 > 0:02:43and that could drive in some showers
0:02:43 > 0:02:45so bright and breezy with showers out to the west.
0:02:45 > 0:02:47The best of the sunshine likely
0:02:47 > 0:02:49to be in sheltered eastern areas,
0:02:49 > 0:02:50but still those temperatures
0:02:50 > 0:02:52disappointing to the north,
0:02:52 > 0:02:54highs of 22 in the south-east corner.
0:02:54 > 0:02:57So this week, the jet stream has been really sat
0:02:57 > 0:02:59to the south of us and that's allowed this area
0:02:59 > 0:03:02of low pressure to sit across the UK
0:03:02 > 0:03:04and allow this northerly breeze
0:03:04 > 0:03:05to drive in this cooler source
0:03:05 > 0:03:07for this time of year.
0:03:07 > 0:03:08Now, the jet stream,
0:03:08 > 0:03:09as we move towards the weekend,
0:03:09 > 0:03:11evens itself out a little,
0:03:11 > 0:03:12but it's still likely to sit
0:03:12 > 0:03:15a bit further south than we first anticipated
0:03:15 > 0:03:18and so this area of high pressure not likely
0:03:18 > 0:03:19to make too much of an impact.
0:03:19 > 0:03:20The low stays with us
0:03:20 > 0:03:22and things stay pretty changeable.
0:03:22 > 0:03:24So, be prepared as we move
0:03:24 > 0:03:26into the beginning of July
0:03:26 > 0:03:27for further rain at times
0:03:27 > 0:03:29and those temperatures to stay pretty average.
0:03:29 > 0:03:30Take care.
