0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello. This summer has delivered a huge variety of weather,

0:00:04 > 0:00:06at times hot, at others very wet.

0:00:06 > 0:00:09But in the past couple of weeks in particular you'd be forgiven

0:00:09 > 0:00:10for feeling short-changed.

0:00:10 > 0:00:12So what's gone wrong with our summer?

0:00:12 > 0:00:15Let's find some answers in the jet stream.

0:00:15 > 0:00:18Typically at this time of year we'd expect it to be north of the UK,

0:00:18 > 0:00:21closer to Iceland. Nothing against that country or its fine people

0:00:21 > 0:00:24but the jet stream should be nearer there than here.

0:00:24 > 0:00:26Here, beneath the jet stream, we'd expect the Azores High

0:00:26 > 0:00:29to build in, giving us some settled summer warmth.

0:00:29 > 0:00:33What's actually happened in the past couple of weeks is the jet stream

0:00:33 > 0:00:35has been unusually far south,

0:00:35 > 0:00:36allowing low pressure systems to

0:00:36 > 0:00:37ride along it

0:00:37 > 0:00:39and come right across the UK,

0:00:39 > 0:00:41giving us the wet weather at times

0:00:41 > 0:00:43and keeping it rather cool.

0:00:43 > 0:00:46So our summer recently has been in brief moments,

0:00:46 > 0:00:48as we saw on Monday in-between the showers.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51In Kent and in Merseyside some pleasant blue sky but you really

0:00:51 > 0:00:55know about it when the showers come in - cool, heavy rain, gusty winds.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57It's a similar picture on Tuesday.

0:00:57 > 0:01:00Some of us will start with lovely sunshine,

0:01:00 > 0:01:02just don't expect it to last very long,

0:01:02 > 0:01:04with low pressure close by on the jet stream

0:01:04 > 0:01:06and the showers getting going.

0:01:06 > 0:01:08From the word go on Tuesday morning,

0:01:08 > 0:01:10some in southern Scotland, northwest England,

0:01:10 > 0:01:12Wales seeing some heavy downpours,

0:01:12 > 0:01:14and they're all pushing further east during the day,

0:01:14 > 0:01:16some heavy, thundery ones with hail.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18Maybe some along the south coast of England,

0:01:18 > 0:01:20the far southeast will avoid them

0:01:20 > 0:01:22but for some places that didn't get a shower

0:01:22 > 0:01:24on Monday the chance is greater on Tuesday.

0:01:24 > 0:01:26For most parts temperatures in the teens,

0:01:26 > 0:01:28just a few into the low 20s.

0:01:28 > 0:01:30Going into Wednesday, slightly different.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33Low pressure's coming in again on the jet stream

0:01:33 > 0:01:35but is producing rain rather than showers.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38And that rain moving in to Wales, western England,

0:01:38 > 0:01:40to Northern Ireland through the day but takes

0:01:40 > 0:01:42a while to get there to much of Scotland and eastern England.

0:01:42 > 0:01:45So actually ahead of the rain, without any showers,

0:01:45 > 0:01:47it'll be a better day for some of us.

0:01:47 > 0:01:49But eventually that rain will move on through

0:01:49 > 0:01:51late Wednesday into Wednesday night

0:01:51 > 0:01:53as the low pressure comes right across the UK.

0:01:53 > 0:01:54The winds pick up,

0:01:54 > 0:01:57particularly on the southern flank of the low pressure,

0:01:57 > 0:02:00so really on Thursday quite a blustery day,

0:02:00 > 0:02:02plenty of showers around but most frequent

0:02:02 > 0:02:03towards the north and west,

0:02:03 > 0:02:06not too many reaching East Anglia and southeast England.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09This is why here we're seeing the higher temperatures

0:02:09 > 0:02:11more in the way of sunny spells.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13Bit of a change of wind direction for Friday,

0:02:13 > 0:02:15around the low pressure, starting to pull away,

0:02:15 > 0:02:17just more of a west-north-westerly

0:02:17 > 0:02:19towards the northwest of the UK.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21So to add insult to injury on Friday,

0:02:21 > 0:02:23there are still the showers around here

0:02:23 > 0:02:25but the temperatures have come down a few degrees and again

0:02:25 > 0:02:28most of the showers still hitting the north and west of the UK,

0:02:28 > 0:02:30as they will be in the start of the weekend

0:02:30 > 0:02:33because this is still predominantly a westerly breeze,

0:02:33 > 0:02:34so the further east you are,

0:02:34 > 0:02:36particularly across England,

0:02:36 > 0:02:38the fewer showers you will see.

0:02:38 > 0:02:40These temperatures very un-summer like on Saturday.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42Won't be much better on Sunday.

0:02:42 > 0:02:43The jet stream, this is

0:02:43 > 0:02:45the forecast for it on Sunday.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47Still taking that southern track and

0:02:47 > 0:02:48it's still carrying weather systems.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50This next one poised to come in

0:02:50 > 0:02:52later on Sunday into the start

0:02:52 > 0:02:53of next week.

0:02:53 > 0:02:56But later next week there are signs

0:02:56 > 0:02:58that that Azores High pressure

0:02:58 > 0:03:00is going to make an attempt to build

0:03:00 > 0:03:02northwards across the UK,

0:03:02 > 0:03:04bringing something more settled,

0:03:04 > 0:03:05but how far it comes,

0:03:05 > 0:03:07how many of us will feel the

0:03:07 > 0:03:09influence is still open to question

0:03:09 > 0:03:11before it gets squeezed south again

0:03:11 > 0:03:13by the return of low pressure.

0:03:13 > 0:03:14But it looks like we're setting up

0:03:14 > 0:03:16a north-south split later next week.

0:03:16 > 0:03:17The closer you are to low pressure,

0:03:17 > 0:03:19northern parts of the UK more unsettled,

0:03:19 > 0:03:21the closer you are to high pressure,

0:03:21 > 0:03:22southern areas more settled.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24But no widespread summer warmth yet.

0:03:24 > 0:03:28But last year our highest temperature came in September,

0:03:28 > 0:03:29so don't lose hope yet.
