0:00:02 > 0:00:05Hello, we've changed the month but we haven't changed the weather.
0:00:05 > 0:00:07Tuesday was another day of intense downpours for some of us.
0:00:07 > 0:00:09But given that we have changed the month,
0:00:09 > 0:00:12let's take this opportunity to look back at some of July's highs and
0:00:12 > 0:00:15lows up to 29th, the provisional figures from the Met Office.
0:00:15 > 0:00:17We'll start with rainfall, for the UK as a whole
0:00:17 > 0:00:19wetter than normal but where you are in the blue and particularly
0:00:19 > 0:00:22the darker blues, you have been most wet compared with average,
0:00:22 > 0:00:24parts of southern England,
0:00:24 > 0:00:26Northern Ireland and south-west Scotland.
0:00:26 > 0:00:28Now, in terms of temperature, for the UK really close to average
0:00:28 > 0:00:30but as well as being wetter than normal,
0:00:30 > 0:00:33parts of the south of the UK were warmer than average for July,
0:00:33 > 0:00:35parts of Scotland were cooler than average.
0:00:35 > 0:00:38Now, we don't always show you the sunshine, but there is a
0:00:38 > 0:00:40reason for this, there is a nugget of interest in this.
0:00:40 > 0:00:42In the yellows and oranges, more sunshine than average,
0:00:42 > 0:00:44and especially into the Northern Isles,
0:00:44 > 0:00:47and into Shetland, where Shetland was sunnier than Cornwall in July.
0:00:47 > 0:00:50That's only happened on a handful of occasions before
0:00:50 > 0:00:52on the weather records.
0:00:52 > 0:00:54And we've changed the month, but we haven't changed the weather.
0:00:54 > 0:00:57There's your Tuesday's sunshine from Shetland
0:00:57 > 0:00:59and this is your cloud in Cornwall, not just cloud, this
0:00:59 > 0:01:02is a funnel cloud, a tornado, not quite touching the ground.
0:01:02 > 0:01:04Such was the turbulent nature
0:01:04 > 0:01:07of Tuesday's weather on the first day of the month.
0:01:07 > 0:01:09And Wednesday, still the same pattern, the day starts wet and
0:01:09 > 0:01:13windy in Cornwall, we'll have some sunny spells in the Northern Isles.
0:01:13 > 0:01:16Now, low pressure moving in on Wednesday,
0:01:16 > 0:01:17and that means some wet,
0:01:17 > 0:01:19windy weather spreading its way north-eastwards across the UK,
0:01:19 > 0:01:22near gales around some of these south-western coasts.
0:01:22 > 0:01:24Heavier bursts running eastwards across southern England,
0:01:24 > 0:01:27but not reaching the far north and north-east of Scotland until we
0:01:27 > 0:01:30get into the evening, temperatures just around 17 to 20 Celsius.
0:01:30 > 0:01:33Now, the rain does finally reach into the Northern Isles
0:01:33 > 0:01:35as we go through Wednesday night,
0:01:35 > 0:01:37low-pressure edging across Scotland on its southern
0:01:37 > 0:01:41flank on Thursday, really quite a blustery day, so quite brisk winds.
0:01:41 > 0:01:43Showers most frequent
0:01:43 > 0:01:45in northern England, Northern Ireland and Scotland,
0:01:45 > 0:01:47some heavy, thundery, risk of hail, not too many for the
0:01:47 > 0:01:49rest of England and Wales, though
0:01:49 > 0:01:51again it will be windy - but sunny spells.
0:01:51 > 0:01:54Low pressure only very slowly moving eastwards on Friday
0:01:54 > 0:01:56but around it dragging a more
0:01:56 > 0:01:58north-westerly component to our wind.
0:01:58 > 0:02:01So if anything, even cooler on Friday,
0:02:01 > 0:02:03with further showers particularly towards north-western parts,
0:02:03 > 0:02:05not too many in the south and east.
0:02:05 > 0:02:08But for some of us just into the mid-teens and that rather
0:02:08 > 0:02:11cool weather pattern, breezy too, continues into the start of the
0:02:11 > 0:02:13weekend, that low only at this
0:02:13 > 0:02:15stage finally reaching into Scandinavia.
0:02:15 > 0:02:18So, breezy on Saturday, most of the showers affecting
0:02:18 > 0:02:21north-western areas, not too many to the south and east,
0:02:21 > 0:02:24some sunny spells but nowhere particularly warm.
0:02:24 > 0:02:26A ridge of high pressure coming in for part two of the weekend,
0:02:26 > 0:02:29on Sunday, but you can see another weather system to the west,
0:02:29 > 0:02:31poised to move in.
0:02:31 > 0:02:34And as we look at the jet stream, towards the end of Sunday
0:02:34 > 0:02:35and into the start of next week,
0:02:35 > 0:02:37we talked about the southern track
0:02:37 > 0:02:40of it keeping us unsettled yesterday
0:02:40 > 0:02:41and so, yeah, here it is, still in that
0:02:41 > 0:02:44southern flow here, with low pressure moving through.
0:02:44 > 0:02:47But hold on a minute, what did we just pass in the mid-Atlantic?
0:02:47 > 0:02:49A bulge here, it looks like the jet stream taking a more
0:02:49 > 0:02:51wavy pattern in the Atlantic,
0:02:51 > 0:02:54encouraged to some degree by the remnants of
0:02:54 > 0:02:56tropical storm Emily coming out of the USA.
0:02:56 > 0:02:59And so we will find with that more wavy pattern, we're more
0:02:59 > 0:03:02inclined to see high pressure moving in for a time next week.
0:03:02 > 0:03:05We're more confident now that that is going to happen and settle things
0:03:05 > 0:03:08down for many of us, how long though is still open to question
0:03:08 > 0:03:11and it could well be that we, still around the northern
0:03:11 > 0:03:14edge of the high pressure, get weather systems brushing Scotland
0:03:14 > 0:03:15and it could well be we get
0:03:15 > 0:03:18something more typical for the time of year,
0:03:18 > 0:03:20cloudy skies and wet at times in the Northern Isles,
0:03:20 > 0:03:22whereas Cornwall sees a bit of sunshine.
0:03:22 > 0:03:24How long the high pressure will stick around, though,
0:03:24 > 0:03:27is certainly something we are going to be looking at in the coming
0:03:27 > 0:03:29days on Weather For The Week ahead.
