0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello. By this time next week our weather should look a little bit

0:00:04 > 0:00:07more like we'd expect in August, with the wettest conditions

0:00:07 > 0:00:10in the north and drier weather further south.

0:00:10 > 0:00:12Which will be a big flip in our fortunes compared with what

0:00:12 > 0:00:14we had on Wednesday this week.

0:00:14 > 0:00:18Southern areas very, very soggy and the further north you looked,

0:00:18 > 0:00:20the brighter the skies became,

0:00:20 > 0:00:23particularly across northern Scotland where there was

0:00:23 > 0:00:26a lot of sunshine as we went on through the day.

0:00:26 > 0:00:28The satellite and radar picture confirms that -

0:00:28 > 0:00:30largely sunny skies across northern Scotland,

0:00:30 > 0:00:32more cloud further south,

0:00:32 > 0:00:34although things brightened up for Northern Ireland,

0:00:34 > 0:00:35northwest England,

0:00:35 > 0:00:37and you can see down to the south there was a lot of rain,

0:00:37 > 0:00:40some heavy bursts of rain.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43But that pattern begins to change during Thursday

0:00:43 > 0:00:46because, as this area of low pressure drifts across

0:00:46 > 0:00:48the country, it's closest to the centre of the low,

0:00:48 > 0:00:51ie in the north, where we'll see most of the showers,

0:00:51 > 0:00:55these showers slow-moving, heavy, with some rumbles of

0:00:55 > 0:00:57thunder, particularly for Scotland, the far north of England

0:00:57 > 0:01:00and Northern Ireland. Further south, not as many showers

0:01:00 > 0:01:04and the wind will be stronger, so if you do catch a shower

0:01:04 > 0:01:08it should blow through quite quickly to reveal sunny spells.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11Temperatures 18-22 degrees.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14So, low pressure still in charge as we move out of Thursday

0:01:14 > 0:01:17into Friday. The low drifting up to the northeast

0:01:17 > 0:01:19and again it's closest to the centre of the low

0:01:19 > 0:01:22where we'll see most of the showers, particularly across Scotland.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24Some into Northern Ireland, northern England,

0:01:24 > 0:01:26down into the Midlands, but generally

0:01:26 > 0:01:28the further south you are, fewer showers, more sunshine.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31Lighter winds at this stage. 16 in Glasgow,

0:01:31 > 0:01:3323 in London.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36The thing we would need to really settle things down

0:01:36 > 0:01:39is high pressure. And that is sitting a long way out

0:01:39 > 0:01:41to the west, but as we go into the start of the weekend

0:01:41 > 0:01:45the bulge in the isobars here, this area of high pressure,

0:01:45 > 0:01:48does begin to take a bit more control of our weather,

0:01:48 > 0:01:51particularly in the south. Here a fair amount of dry

0:01:51 > 0:01:54weather through the day on Saturday, still a fair few showers

0:01:54 > 0:01:58up towards the north and northwest. As we move on in to Sunday,

0:01:58 > 0:02:01it looks briefly like this area of high pressure

0:02:01 > 0:02:03might be winning the battle. It might be settling things

0:02:03 > 0:02:07down properly but it isn't going to win because this area of

0:02:07 > 0:02:10low pressure will start to move its way in from the Atlantic,

0:02:10 > 0:02:13so, yes, a spell of fine weather on Sunday after what could be

0:02:13 > 0:02:16quite a cool start in places. And as we go on through the day

0:02:16 > 0:02:19we will then see some outbreaks of rain pushing in across

0:02:19 > 0:02:21Northern Ireland. That rain is expected to move

0:02:21 > 0:02:24erratically eastwards as we go on through Monday.

0:02:24 > 0:02:27Still a fair of amount of dry weather down to the southeast

0:02:27 > 0:02:30and temperatures 16-20 degrees.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33So let's catch up on the progress of our area of high pressure

0:02:33 > 0:02:36as we move out of Monday into Tuesday.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39Still sitting down here to the southwest. This area of

0:02:39 > 0:02:42high pressure is essentially contained in

0:02:42 > 0:02:43a ridge in the jet stream.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45The jet stream is what drives the

0:02:45 > 0:02:47weather systems around the world

0:02:47 > 0:02:49and the jet stream bending way up

0:02:49 > 0:02:50to the north as our area of

0:02:50 > 0:02:52high pressure sits in place.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54The weather systems will be

0:02:54 > 0:02:56deflected away to the north

0:02:56 > 0:02:58and as this bend in the jet stream

0:02:58 > 0:03:00builds its way in from the middle

0:03:00 > 0:03:02part of next week, it is likely

0:03:02 > 0:03:04that more of us will see the

0:03:04 > 0:03:05influence of this area

0:03:05 > 0:03:07of high pressure. The big question

0:03:07 > 0:03:09is how far north that high will

0:03:09 > 0:03:11take control, and it still looks

0:03:11 > 0:03:13like northern parts of the country

0:03:13 > 0:03:15could be affected by areas of

0:03:15 > 0:03:17low pressure. So it's likely to be

0:03:17 > 0:03:20dry with some sunshine in the south,

0:03:20 > 0:03:22some rain at times in northern parts

0:03:22 > 0:03:24of the country, a little warmer

0:03:24 > 0:03:26but no heat wave. But in southern

0:03:26 > 0:03:27areas at least, something a little

0:03:27 > 0:03:29more settled on the way.
