0:00:02 > 0:00:04Low pressure is in control at the moment

0:00:04 > 0:00:06and while that remains the case,

0:00:06 > 0:00:08we are going to struggle to see much

0:00:08 > 0:00:10in the way of settled summer weather.

0:00:10 > 0:00:12It was certainly quite unsettled on Thursday.

0:00:12 > 0:00:14Southern areas were very windy,

0:00:14 > 0:00:15but at least that meant the showers

0:00:15 > 0:00:17blew through quite quickly.

0:00:17 > 0:00:19Further north, yes, the winds were lighter,

0:00:19 > 0:00:20but there were lots of showers,

0:00:20 > 0:00:22some of them heavy and thundery,

0:00:22 > 0:00:23particularly across northern

0:00:23 > 0:00:25and eastern Scotland.

0:00:25 > 0:00:26Yes, that delivered

0:00:26 > 0:00:27some impressive cloudscapes

0:00:27 > 0:00:29for our Weather Watchers here,

0:00:29 > 0:00:31but if you're on your summer holidays,

0:00:31 > 0:00:32you might well be hoping

0:00:32 > 0:00:35for a bit more blue sky than that.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37So, what about the prospects for the next few days?

0:00:37 > 0:00:41Low pressure still firmly on the scene on Friday,

0:00:41 > 0:00:42sitting up to the north-east at this stage

0:00:42 > 0:00:45so it's closest to the centre of the low

0:00:45 > 0:00:47where we'll see most of the showers,

0:00:47 > 0:00:48particularly across Scotland.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50A windier day across Scotland.

0:00:50 > 0:00:51The further south you look,

0:00:51 > 0:00:53you can see fewer showers,

0:00:53 > 0:00:54more in the way of dry weather,

0:00:54 > 0:00:56some spells of sunshine.

0:00:56 > 0:00:57The winds will be lighter

0:00:57 > 0:00:59than they were during Thursday

0:00:59 > 0:01:00and some warmth to be had,

0:01:00 > 0:01:02particularly across the south-east,

0:01:02 > 0:01:0322-23 degrees,

0:01:03 > 0:01:05cooler and fresher further north and west.

0:01:05 > 0:01:07Now, as we go into the start of the weekend,

0:01:07 > 0:01:10we are essentially stranded between high pressure,

0:01:10 > 0:01:12which is trying to muscle in from the south-west,

0:01:12 > 0:01:13and low pressure,

0:01:13 > 0:01:16which is still hanging around up to the north-east.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18That'll bring us a north-westerly wind,

0:01:18 > 0:01:20never a particularly warm wind direction.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23Quite a few showers, particularly across central areas,

0:01:23 > 0:01:27we suspect, and temperatures just 16-20 degrees.

0:01:27 > 0:01:29High pressure manages to bulge its way in

0:01:29 > 0:01:31as we go on into Sunday.

0:01:31 > 0:01:33Looks like it's trying to take control.

0:01:33 > 0:01:35It'll certainly give us a fine start to Sunday.

0:01:35 > 0:01:37Quite a cool start as well,

0:01:37 > 0:01:40but the high does not manage to hold on.

0:01:40 > 0:01:43An area of low pressure begins to journey in from the west

0:01:43 > 0:01:44so that'll increase the cloud

0:01:44 > 0:01:47and bring rain for Northern Ireland and Western Scotland

0:01:47 > 0:01:49later in the day and it is low pressure

0:01:49 > 0:01:51that is with us again

0:01:51 > 0:01:53into the start of next week.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55Frontal systems pushing across the country -

0:01:55 > 0:01:56actually, this cold front here

0:01:56 > 0:01:58could be really quite active,

0:01:58 > 0:02:01could bring a band of really heavy rain southwards

0:02:01 > 0:02:03and eastwards with the odd rumble of thunder

0:02:03 > 0:02:05and those temperatures still a little disappointing

0:02:05 > 0:02:07at 16-20 degrees.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10Now, that rain band should clear away on Tuesday.

0:02:10 > 0:02:11What does it leave behind?

0:02:11 > 0:02:12Well, you guessed it,

0:02:12 > 0:02:14a mixture of sunshine and showers,

0:02:14 > 0:02:17temperatures just 15-20 degrees.

0:02:17 > 0:02:18So, what's going on?

0:02:18 > 0:02:20If we look at the broader picture,

0:02:20 > 0:02:21the jet stream, you can see

0:02:21 > 0:02:23the way the jet dives southwards.

0:02:23 > 0:02:25In this bend in the jet stream,

0:02:25 > 0:02:27we will have an area of low pressure,

0:02:27 > 0:02:28but look further west.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30Notice the way the jet stream,

0:02:30 > 0:02:31the winds blow upwards?

0:02:31 > 0:02:33We have this ridge in the jet stream

0:02:33 > 0:02:36and it's within this ridge that high pressure

0:02:36 > 0:02:37will be sitting in place.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39Now, through the middle part of the coming week,

0:02:39 > 0:02:41it looks like this ridge of high pressure

0:02:41 > 0:02:43will build its way northwards and eastwards,

0:02:43 > 0:02:46cutting off these Atlantic weather systems,

0:02:46 > 0:02:49stopping them from working across the country.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51The big question is just how much influence

0:02:51 > 0:02:53will this high pressure have?

0:02:53 > 0:02:56There's a chance it might build northwards

0:02:56 > 0:02:58across the whole country and if it that happens,

0:02:58 > 0:02:59all of us will get into

0:02:59 > 0:03:00more settled summer weather,

0:03:00 > 0:03:02but there's also a chance

0:03:02 > 0:03:03that the high will only make it in

0:03:03 > 0:03:06across the southern half of the country,

0:03:06 > 0:03:07allowing low pressure to continue

0:03:07 > 0:03:09to affect northern areas at times,

0:03:09 > 0:03:11which will, of course, bring more cloud

0:03:11 > 0:03:13and some outbreaks of rain.

0:03:13 > 0:03:14So, to summarise that,

0:03:14 > 0:03:16for the latter part of next week,

0:03:16 > 0:03:17it does look like southern areas

0:03:17 > 0:03:19at least will turn drier,

0:03:19 > 0:03:20but there is still the chance

0:03:20 > 0:03:22of some rain in the north.

0:03:22 > 0:03:23While temperatures may climb

0:03:23 > 0:03:24a little for some,

0:03:24 > 0:03:26there's no heat wave on the way.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29That's all from me for now. Goodbye.
