0:00:02 > 0:00:05Hello, there. You certainly couldn't describe the weather we've had
0:00:05 > 0:00:06over the last week as any sort of heat wave,
0:00:06 > 0:00:08and I have to say, it doesn't look like
0:00:08 > 0:00:11we're going to see a heat wave in the week ahead, either.
0:00:11 > 0:00:12That is in stark contrast
0:00:12 > 0:00:13to the conditions they've had
0:00:13 > 0:00:15across southern Europe -
0:00:15 > 0:00:16from the Balkans through Italy,
0:00:16 > 0:00:17westwards to Iberia.
0:00:17 > 0:00:19Once again, Friday brought
0:00:19 > 0:00:20temperatures up into the 40s -
0:00:20 > 0:00:23very close to 45 degrees
0:00:23 > 0:00:24in southern Spain.
0:00:24 > 0:00:26Southern Europe, here,
0:00:26 > 0:00:28is on the warm side of the jet stream,
0:00:28 > 0:00:30warm air just wafting its way up
0:00:30 > 0:00:31from the south, while we are on
0:00:31 > 0:00:33the northern side of the jet stream,
0:00:33 > 0:00:35the cool side of the jet stream,
0:00:35 > 0:00:37and that is where we're going to stay
0:00:37 > 0:00:39as we go on through this weekend,
0:00:39 > 0:00:40and with the jet stream blowing
0:00:40 > 0:00:41across the Atlantic,
0:00:41 > 0:00:43it will continue to bring weather systems,
0:00:43 > 0:00:45bands of rain, in our direction.
0:00:45 > 0:00:47The rain on Saturday will come
0:00:47 > 0:00:48in the form of showers,
0:00:48 > 0:00:49but some really quite heavy showers
0:00:49 > 0:00:51across central and southern portions
0:00:51 > 0:00:52of the British Isles,
0:00:52 > 0:00:54with some rumbles of thunder,
0:00:54 > 0:00:55flashes of lightning,
0:00:55 > 0:00:57some hail thrown in for good measure,
0:00:57 > 0:00:58some sunny breaks in between -
0:00:58 > 0:01:00not as many showers further north,
0:01:00 > 0:01:01but some of these
0:01:01 > 0:01:03could still be on the heavy side,
0:01:03 > 0:01:05and those temperatures,
0:01:05 > 0:01:0716 to 21 degrees at best,
0:01:07 > 0:01:08and those temperatures will drop away
0:01:08 > 0:01:09during Saturday night.
0:01:09 > 0:01:12In fact, some of us could start Sunday morning
0:01:12 > 0:01:13in single digits -
0:01:13 > 0:01:15but, with this little bump in the isobars,
0:01:15 > 0:01:16a ridge of high pressure,
0:01:16 > 0:01:18Sunday actually isn't a bad looking day.
0:01:18 > 0:01:19Should be largely dry
0:01:19 > 0:01:21with some spells of sunshine,
0:01:21 > 0:01:23clouding over from the west later on,
0:01:23 > 0:01:25with some rain into Northern Ireland,
0:01:25 > 0:01:27Western Scotland, north-west England
0:01:27 > 0:01:28and West Wales.
0:01:28 > 0:01:31The rain courtesy of a weather front -
0:01:31 > 0:01:32indeed, a set of weather fronts,
0:01:32 > 0:01:34which will be working southwards and eastwards
0:01:34 > 0:01:36across the country during Monday,
0:01:36 > 0:01:38and on this cold front, here,
0:01:38 > 0:01:39we could see some really quite heavy rain
0:01:39 > 0:01:40for a time.
0:01:40 > 0:01:42The rain likely to break up into showers,
0:01:42 > 0:01:44but some of those could be big downpours
0:01:44 > 0:01:45with some rumbles of thunder
0:01:45 > 0:01:46and some gusty winds, as well -
0:01:46 > 0:01:49and those temperatures still on the low side
0:01:49 > 0:01:52for the time of year, 16-20 degrees.
0:01:52 > 0:01:54This frontal system becomes quite slow-moving,
0:01:54 > 0:01:56we suspect, as we go through Monday night
0:01:56 > 0:01:58into Tuesday. Still hanging around
0:01:58 > 0:02:00in south-eastern areas on Tuesday,
0:02:00 > 0:02:02with the potential to bring some spells of rain,
0:02:02 > 0:02:03perhaps some thundery showers,
0:02:03 > 0:02:06and even as things brighten up to the north-west,
0:02:06 > 0:02:09there will be some showers that time.
0:02:09 > 0:02:11Temperatures 15-20 degrees.
0:02:11 > 0:02:12For the middle of next week,
0:02:12 > 0:02:13we are essentially marooned
0:02:13 > 0:02:15between low-pressure
0:02:15 > 0:02:16still spinning around to the east,
0:02:16 > 0:02:19high-pressure trying, but not quite succeeding,
0:02:19 > 0:02:20to building in from the west,
0:02:20 > 0:02:21and that leaves us
0:02:21 > 0:02:23with a north or north-westerly wind -
0:02:23 > 0:02:25never a warm wind direction -
0:02:25 > 0:02:27yes, some sunshine, some showers, as well,
0:02:27 > 0:02:30these most likely towards the south-east.
0:02:30 > 0:02:31So, what's going on?
0:02:31 > 0:02:33Well, for the middle of next week,
0:02:33 > 0:02:35we are still in this dip in the jet stream,
0:02:35 > 0:02:37and still on the cool side of the jet stream,
0:02:37 > 0:02:39with an area of low pressure -
0:02:39 > 0:02:40but, out in the Atlantic,
0:02:40 > 0:02:42the jet stream blows northwards.
0:02:42 > 0:02:44We get a ridge in the jet stream,
0:02:44 > 0:02:46and contained in this ridge,
0:02:46 > 0:02:48we will have an area of high pressure.
0:02:48 > 0:02:50Now, we've been talking about this
0:02:50 > 0:02:51over the last few days,
0:02:51 > 0:02:53trying to build this area of high pressure
0:02:53 > 0:02:55in across the country. Some question marks
0:02:55 > 0:02:57about just how much influence it will have
0:02:57 > 0:02:59on our weather, but, by the end of next week,
0:02:59 > 0:03:01it does look like southern areas
0:03:01 > 0:03:02are likely to feel the effects
0:03:02 > 0:03:03of high-pressure -
0:03:03 > 0:03:05that means more in the way of dry weather,
0:03:05 > 0:03:06some sunshine,
0:03:06 > 0:03:07but the high is unlikely
0:03:07 > 0:03:09to get all the way northwards across the country.
0:03:09 > 0:03:10Northern areas
0:03:10 > 0:03:14still experiencing areas of low pressure,
0:03:14 > 0:03:15which will bring some cloud
0:03:15 > 0:03:16and some rain at times.
0:03:16 > 0:03:17So, into next weekend,
0:03:17 > 0:03:20it does look like southern areas will be driest,
0:03:20 > 0:03:22with some rain in the north,
0:03:22 > 0:03:24and certainly no heat wave.
0:03:24 > 0:03:26Definitely not on the scale
0:03:26 > 0:03:27of what we've been seeing
0:03:27 > 0:03:28across southern Europe.
