0:00:03 > 0:00:06We're going to take a look at the weather prospects

0:00:06 > 0:00:08for the whole of the British Isles for the next few days

0:00:08 > 0:00:09in just a second, but first of all

0:00:09 > 0:00:12I just want to bring you right up to date with where we are

0:00:12 > 0:00:15with regard to the heat across the southern parts of Europe

0:00:15 > 0:00:19because Monday saw very little change in the overall pattern.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22Many of the temperatures that I'm showing you here are still

0:00:22 > 0:00:26some 5-7 or 8 degrees above what we would expect at the time of year,

0:00:26 > 0:00:28and part of the reason that that heat wave has been

0:00:28 > 0:00:31so persistent is that the jet stream hasn't been able to

0:00:31 > 0:00:34bring in from the Atlantic cooler, fresher conditions.

0:00:34 > 0:00:38Whenever you get to see that sort of dip in the jet stream,

0:00:38 > 0:00:41you can very comfortably, at the surface, rather than in

0:00:41 > 0:00:45the upper atmosphere, fit in quite a vigorous area of low pressure.

0:00:45 > 0:00:48And there it sits close by on the near continent.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51And we'll certainly see some of the effects of that particular system

0:00:51 > 0:00:53in the south-eastern quarter as the day goes on.

0:00:53 > 0:00:55Some really quite heavy pulses of rain in there,

0:00:55 > 0:00:58maybe the odd rumble of thunder, and Monday's weather front,

0:00:58 > 0:01:01which we thought was just going to peter out

0:01:01 > 0:01:03across the southern counties, will gradually be pushed

0:01:03 > 0:01:06ever further north across the greater part of England and Wales,

0:01:06 > 0:01:09cloud and rain here putting a bit of a dampener on things

0:01:09 > 0:01:10and a dent in the temperatures, too.

0:01:10 > 0:01:14The best of the conditions perhaps Scotland and Northern Ireland.

0:01:14 > 0:01:17Now, that area of low pressure is on the move and rather unusually,

0:01:17 > 0:01:20it moves from south to north during the course of Wednesday.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23But it leaves behind a legacy of a trailing

0:01:23 > 0:01:25and really quite active weather front, so again some heavy

0:01:25 > 0:01:28pulses of rain here through East Anglia and the south-east.

0:01:28 > 0:01:30The best of the conditions - Scotland, Northern Ireland,

0:01:30 > 0:01:33northern and western parts of both England and Wales.

0:01:33 > 0:01:37And for that, you have to thank this area of high pressure

0:01:37 > 0:01:40trying to be the dominant feature on Thursday,

0:01:40 > 0:01:43but you'll notice it's sandwiched in between those areas of low pressure,

0:01:43 > 0:01:45so it's a bit of a battle.

0:01:45 > 0:01:47We have to get rid of that rain first of all before it

0:01:47 > 0:01:51brightens up in the east and then cherish the rest of Thursday,

0:01:51 > 0:01:53because, as I say, it's a battle

0:01:53 > 0:01:56which I'm afraid that area of high pressure loses out to

0:01:56 > 0:02:00this new area of low pressure up by Iceland. Its trailing weather front,

0:02:00 > 0:02:05and quite compacted isobars too, bring a combination of wet and windy

0:02:05 > 0:02:08weather initially into Scotland and Northern Ireland and then

0:02:08 > 0:02:12gradually pushing it ever further south during the course of Friday.

0:02:12 > 0:02:15And those temperatures really nothing to write home about at all.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18And the breeze will be quite a considerable factor

0:02:18 > 0:02:19on the day as well.

0:02:19 > 0:02:23Even as I take you out of Friday on into Saturday, we still have

0:02:23 > 0:02:25weather fronts associated with that low

0:02:25 > 0:02:27draped down across the British Isles.

0:02:27 > 0:02:30Not a write-off, not a really messy start to the weekend -

0:02:30 > 0:02:33it will be a mixture again of sunny spells and showers,

0:02:33 > 0:02:37the breeze rather noticeable there across the greater part of Scotland.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40Similar sort of fare on into Sunday

0:02:40 > 0:02:42and as we take you into the start of the new week,

0:02:42 > 0:02:46we've got essentially low pressure north of the jet stream,

0:02:46 > 0:02:50high pressure to the south of the jet stream,

0:02:50 > 0:02:55and that enables us to stay in this flow of west to south-westerly winds

0:02:55 > 0:02:57right across the British Isles,

0:02:57 > 0:03:01giving us what we call a mobile pattern of weather.

0:03:01 > 0:03:03So, the high pressure, not a million miles away

0:03:03 > 0:03:05from the south - it's not all doom and gloom,

0:03:05 > 0:03:08but it's not doing enough to keep the low pressures closer to Iceland

0:03:08 > 0:03:10from the northern half of the British Isles

0:03:10 > 0:03:14and at times we will have these spells of wet and windy weather

0:03:14 > 0:03:17moving on across particularly the northern half of the country.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20So, the driest of the conditions, thanks to that area

0:03:20 > 0:03:22of high pressure, will be found in the south,

0:03:22 > 0:03:23while the wetter and windier conditions

0:03:23 > 0:03:25will be found in the north,

0:03:25 > 0:03:28and I'm afraid for a heat wave you'll have to move down

0:03:28 > 0:03:30towards the southern parts of Europe. Bye-bye.
