0:00:04 > 0:00:06Hello, there. Well, could an Atlantic hurricane

0:00:06 > 0:00:08be the saviour of what's left of summer here in the UK?

0:00:08 > 0:00:10All will be revealed very shortly -

0:00:10 > 0:00:13but first let's deal with what's happening out there

0:00:13 > 0:00:14for the rest of the week,

0:00:14 > 0:00:16because, at least on Wednesday,

0:00:16 > 0:00:17it's a bit of an east-west split.

0:00:17 > 0:00:20Eastern areas under a ridge of high pressure,

0:00:20 > 0:00:21it's been a bit of a chilly start today,

0:00:21 > 0:00:22and out towards the west,

0:00:22 > 0:00:24an area of low pressure dominant,

0:00:24 > 0:00:26these weather fronts gradually pushing their way in.

0:00:26 > 0:00:28Now, it's going to be a slow and fairly erratic process,

0:00:28 > 0:00:30and that does mean some will get away

0:00:30 > 0:00:31through much of the day dry,

0:00:31 > 0:00:34but Northern Ireland, rain on and off from breakfast,

0:00:34 > 0:00:36rain spreading across central and western Scotland

0:00:36 > 0:00:38through the afternoon, and, into western parts of Wales,

0:00:38 > 0:00:39south-west England

0:00:39 > 0:00:41and maybe the north-west of England.

0:00:41 > 0:00:43But really, much of Wales, England,

0:00:43 > 0:00:44eastern Scotland, Wednesday will stay dry,

0:00:44 > 0:00:46increasing amounts of cloud,

0:00:46 > 0:00:47but, in any hazy sunshine

0:00:47 > 0:00:49should feel pleasant enough.

0:00:49 > 0:00:50Temperatures into the low 20s.

0:00:50 > 0:00:52That weather front gets a bit more oomph on it

0:00:52 > 0:00:53as we go through Wednesday night

0:00:53 > 0:00:54into Thursday morning,

0:00:54 > 0:00:56though still fairly erratic.

0:00:56 > 0:00:58Some not seeing much rain, but where it does rain,

0:00:58 > 0:00:59there could be some heavier bursts.

0:00:59 > 0:01:01Couldn't rule out the odd rumble of thunder, too,

0:01:01 > 0:01:03and that rain lingering into the morning

0:01:03 > 0:01:05across some eastern parts of England -

0:01:05 > 0:01:06but note the temperatures -

0:01:06 > 0:01:08not quite as chilly as they started Wednesday.

0:01:08 > 0:01:10Early risers, and maybe through the morning rush hour,

0:01:10 > 0:01:11still some rain.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14Maybe slow to clear eastern counties of England, but it will do,

0:01:14 > 0:01:15and then it's back to a state

0:01:15 > 0:01:17of really what we saw on Tuesday.

0:01:17 > 0:01:18Low pressure away to the north-west,

0:01:18 > 0:01:19bit of a breeze, in fact,

0:01:19 > 0:01:21probably breezier than we saw on Tuesday.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23A few showers dotted around,

0:01:23 > 0:01:25mainly west of Scotland, Northern Ireland,

0:01:25 > 0:01:27north-west England, isolated ones elsewhere,

0:01:27 > 0:01:28with most spending the bulk of the day dry,

0:01:28 > 0:01:30and very pleasant in the sunshine.

0:01:30 > 0:01:32Temperatures could get into the mid-20s,

0:01:32 > 0:01:33but it turns cooler from there on.

0:01:33 > 0:01:34Low pressure to the north of us,

0:01:34 > 0:01:36and, running around that,

0:01:36 > 0:01:38the wind's coming from a slightly cooler source.

0:01:38 > 0:01:39We'll see some lively bursts of rain

0:01:39 > 0:01:41pushing across the country through the night,

0:01:41 > 0:01:44and, into Friday, it's going to be a story of sunshine and showers -

0:01:44 > 0:01:45unlike Tuesday, unlike Thursday,

0:01:45 > 0:01:48it's going to be a case of you'll be luckier to avoid the showers.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50Those showers will be fairly widespread,

0:01:50 > 0:01:51some heavy, thundery,

0:01:51 > 0:01:54and a very gusty wind - and note the temperatures.

0:01:54 > 0:01:55Instead of mid-20s,

0:01:55 > 0:01:57many will be struggling to get out of the teens -

0:01:57 > 0:01:59and we continue with that flow of cooler north-west winds

0:01:59 > 0:02:00as we go into Saturday.

0:02:00 > 0:02:02Low pressure pulling away.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04Ridge of high pressure trying to build from the south-west,

0:02:04 > 0:02:06so it does mean, whilst we will see showers,

0:02:06 > 0:02:08particularly across Scotland

0:02:08 > 0:02:10and potentially across eastern parts of the country,

0:02:10 > 0:02:12it turns drier from the south-west.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14Showers become fewer in number through the day.

0:02:14 > 0:02:16Starting to feel more pleasant in the sunshine,

0:02:16 > 0:02:19but overall, temperatures a bit on the disappointing scale.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21And then, that hurricane.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23Well, we have to return to the here and now

0:02:23 > 0:02:24to explain what's going on.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26Here it is, blob of cloud, strengthening storm,

0:02:26 > 0:02:28for the time being staying offshore,

0:02:28 > 0:02:29but it weakens again

0:02:29 > 0:02:31as it runs across the colder waters,

0:02:31 > 0:02:33and notice, through the end of the week,

0:02:33 > 0:02:34it gets consumed into this wider area

0:02:34 > 0:02:36of low pressure. Now, within that,

0:02:36 > 0:02:38there'll still be some tropical air wrapped in,

0:02:38 > 0:02:40hence that means, where we do see the rain,

0:02:40 > 0:02:41it will be on the heavy side.

0:02:41 > 0:02:43Notice the ridge of high pressure

0:02:43 > 0:02:44just about holding on

0:02:44 > 0:02:45towards the south and the east.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47For the moment, OK, there's a bit of uncertainty,

0:02:47 > 0:02:49of course, with the exact timing,

0:02:49 > 0:02:50the exact positioning of rain.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53Looks like the northern half of the country most likely to see the rain.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55Pretty heavy on some of the hills,

0:02:55 > 0:02:57Cumbria, western Scotland, potentially, too.

0:02:57 > 0:02:59Some to the south could stay dry on Sunday

0:02:59 > 0:03:00and very pleasant -

0:03:00 > 0:03:02and that driving area of low pressure

0:03:02 > 0:03:03into the start of next week

0:03:03 > 0:03:05will drift its way northwards and eastwards.

0:03:05 > 0:03:07May allow a weather front just to push across suburban areas

0:03:07 > 0:03:09bringing a few splashes of rain,

0:03:09 > 0:03:10but, beyond that,

0:03:10 > 0:03:11it's now looking increasingly likely

0:03:11 > 0:03:13high pressure will build.

0:03:13 > 0:03:15Could Gert be the saviour of our summer?

0:03:15 > 0:03:17So, into the final week of August.

0:03:17 > 0:03:18There are increasing signs

0:03:18 > 0:03:20that not only it will turn dry

0:03:20 > 0:03:21but a bit sunnier and warmer,

0:03:21 > 0:03:22particularly in the south.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24The extent of that high-pressure system

0:03:24 > 0:03:25we'll have to keep a close eye on,

0:03:25 > 0:03:27but, of course, this is important,

0:03:27 > 0:03:28because by the end of next week,

0:03:28 > 0:03:30some of you will be looking into the start

0:03:30 > 0:03:31of a bank holiday weekend.
