0:00:02 > 0:00:04As we step into the first day of meteorological autumn,

0:00:04 > 0:00:07let's take a look back at Summer 2017.

0:00:07 > 0:00:11The provisional statistics show it's been rather a mixed sort of summer.

0:00:11 > 0:00:15Back in June, we saw the hottest June day in over 40 years,

0:00:15 > 0:00:16in fact, lots of fairly hot

0:00:16 > 0:00:20and largely dry weather for many parts of the country during June

0:00:20 > 0:00:23and into the first part of July, too, but then things turned much

0:00:23 > 0:00:26more unsettled during the second half of July -

0:00:26 > 0:00:28wetter than average, and flash flooding,

0:00:28 > 0:00:30particularly in Cornwall, where we

0:00:30 > 0:00:33saw 105 millimetres of rain in just three hours.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35But despite that unsettled theme,

0:00:35 > 0:00:37we ended the summer on a very hot and sunny note with

0:00:37 > 0:00:40one of the hottest August Bank Holidays on record.

0:00:40 > 0:00:42So, how does the first day of autumn look?

0:00:42 > 0:00:45Well, we're likely to start off on a largely dry note on Friday

0:00:45 > 0:00:47with some sunshine.

0:00:47 > 0:00:49Through the day, we'll start to see showers building,

0:00:49 > 0:00:52but they'll be fewer and further between compared to Thursday.

0:00:52 > 0:00:54Eastern parts of England and eastern Scotland

0:00:54 > 0:00:56bearing the brunt of the showery weather.

0:00:56 > 0:00:5921 degrees or so in the sunshine towards the south,

0:00:59 > 0:01:01typically the high teens further north.

0:01:01 > 0:01:03And then those showers ease away through Friday evening

0:01:03 > 0:01:07and overnight into Saturday as higher pressure squeezes in.

0:01:07 > 0:01:09So that's good news to start off your weekend. Although it will be

0:01:09 > 0:01:12quite fresh first thing this Saturday morning,

0:01:12 > 0:01:14we should see some sunshine from the word go.

0:01:14 > 0:01:16And we've got this area of high pressure

0:01:16 > 0:01:20nudging in from the south, and that is going to keep most places

0:01:20 > 0:01:22dry and bright through the day, with light winds, too.

0:01:22 > 0:01:25So Saturday is shaping up to be the better day of the weekend -

0:01:25 > 0:01:29sunshine, a bit of cumulus cloud building up during the afternoon.

0:01:29 > 0:01:32Waiting in the wings we've got this rain you can see,

0:01:32 > 0:01:34and that's going to be more of a player by the time we get to

0:01:34 > 0:01:37Sunday, but for Saturday it will feel pretty pleasant,

0:01:37 > 0:01:42with those temperatures for most of us between around 17 to 21 degrees.

0:01:42 > 0:01:44Then it changes into Saturday night

0:01:44 > 0:01:47and Sunday as this frontal system approaches from the west.

0:01:47 > 0:01:51Some fairly tight isobars, so a spell of wet and windy weather

0:01:51 > 0:01:54on Sunday, initially across Northern Ireland, Wales,

0:01:54 > 0:01:55the south-west of England, with heavy rain,

0:01:55 > 0:01:58nudging its way eastwards through the day,

0:01:58 > 0:02:01but I think the far east could well get away with a largely dry

0:02:01 > 0:02:04story before that rain arrives later on.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07And temperatures are, well, around 16 to 19 degrees,

0:02:07 > 0:02:10feeling cooler with the wind and the outbreaks of rain.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12Now, this frontal system tends to ease as

0:02:12 > 0:02:14we head through into the new working week,

0:02:14 > 0:02:17so that rainfall just dying away through the day on Monday.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20But I think Monday's quite a cloudy sort of picture,

0:02:20 > 0:02:22and you could see the odd remnants of some wet weather.

0:02:22 > 0:02:26Some brighter weather across eastern parts of the UK again, and with

0:02:26 > 0:02:27a bit more of a southerly influence,

0:02:27 > 0:02:30temperatures up to around 22 degrees or so,

0:02:30 > 0:02:33certainly milder overnight through into the middle part of the week.

0:02:33 > 0:02:37So, for Tuesday, the next band of rain arrives from the Atlantic,

0:02:37 > 0:02:40bringing another spell of wet weather from west to east,

0:02:40 > 0:02:43but temperatures still up to around 22 degrees.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46Now, low pressure stays fairly close by as we move through

0:02:46 > 0:02:49the middle of the week, out towards the west, I think, by the

0:02:49 > 0:02:52time we get to Wednesday, drawing in those winds from the Atlantic.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55So a westerly influence to our weather through

0:02:55 > 0:02:58the course of next week, bringing spells of rain at times,

0:02:58 > 0:03:02interspersed with some sunshine and some scattered showers, too.

0:03:02 > 0:03:03Now, most of the rain

0:03:03 > 0:03:06and the windier conditions are more likely to be across western and

0:03:06 > 0:03:09north-western parts of the country, particularly later in the week.

0:03:09 > 0:03:13Further south-east, you're likely to say a bit drier, a bit warmer,

0:03:13 > 0:03:14with lighter winds, too.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17So as we head through into the start of autumn,

0:03:17 > 0:03:19meteorologically speaking, fairly unsettled.

0:03:19 > 0:03:21There'll be spells of rain at times,

0:03:21 > 0:03:24often quite windy towards the north and the west,

0:03:24 > 0:03:25and you're more likely to stay drier

0:03:25 > 0:03:28and warmer in the south-east. Bye for now.
